* {{Woolseyism}}: A lot of names have been changed, but compared to the English translation of ''VideoGame/DragonQuestV'' or ''VideoGame/DragonQuestIX'', the [[JustForPun punny names]] and [[JustAStupidAccent silly accents]] aren't as heavy. There are a few head-scratchers, though, such as Barbara (a perfectly acceptable English name) becoming Ashlynn.

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Terry. Is he a selfish asshole who only comes around [[spoiler:after being beaten silly by the party]], or is he [[spoiler:a HurtingHero whose desire to become the greatest swordsman is fueled by the trauma of seeing his sister kidnapped ([[VideoGame/DragonQuestMonsters and not for the first time, either]]), and only acts like a jerk in an effort to push potential friends away so he doesn't lose them too]]? Also, was [[spoiler:his DealWithTheDevil with Dhuran a selfish act of spite just to gain more power, or [[DespairEventHorizon an act of desperation]] after the party unknowingly crushed his lifelong dream by finding the Sword of Ramia before he could]]?

** ''Land of Illusion'' manga, written by Yuuki Nakashima: [[AdaptationalVillainy Dhuran]] is a far cry from his honourable warrior in the game, and rejects the idea of a fair duel. Responsible for corrupting the swordsman Terry, Dhuran sent him to kill the heroes--which included Terry's sister--for his own twisted enjoyment, and treats it like a show. After his right-hand Harmour has been beaten by the heroes, Dhuran has no hesitation [[YouHaveFailedMe executing Harmour via the hand of Terry]]. Later, when Botts confronted Dhuran, Dhuran devoured all of Botts's party members, cruelly telling Botts that he is looking forward to their scream in agony when they melt alive in him, as he sadistically beats Botts up.

* CompleteMonster: [[BigBad Lord Mortamor]] is the [[DemonLordsAndArchdevils Archfiend]] who seeks to [[HopeCrusher eradicate all hope in the world]]. Running the land of Greedmore with internment en masse, Mortamor has his subjects routinely subjected to torment and manipulation, with those who resist being shipped off to be executed by the hundreds. A complete sadist, after manipulating a town into killing each other over a treasure he planted in one resident's house, Mortamor goes on to rewind time just to enjoy the massacre over again, with his entire land suffering endlessly only to be resurrected at Mortamor's whims indefinitely.

* CompleteMonster: The [[DemonLordsAndArchdevils Archfiend]], [[BigBad Lord Mortamor]], unlike the other villains, doesn't simply want to conquer or destroy the world; he wants to completely and utterly [[DespairEventHorizon destroy]] the very concept of {{hope|Crusher}}. To this end, he sends Murdaw, Jamirus, Gracos, and Dhuran to seal Alltrades Abbey, Medford's Manor, Sorceria, and Cloudsgate Citadel to prevent Heroes from being made and Magic Burst from being taught, turns Pegasus to stone while leaving her normal horse self, Peggy Sue to roam around, kills Eldress Isnomor as payback for Gracos's defeat right after she gives Ashlynn Magic Burst, and effectively turns his own world the Dread Realm, which he rules, into a giant concentration camp where his subjects are routinely abused, manipulated, tortured, and slaughtered like animals. Those few who manage to resist his soul-crushing ways are instead shipped off to a special prison where they are starved, tortured, and ultimately executed hundreds at a time. One sample act to show how he goes about destroying the spirits of people is manipulating a town to kill each other over a treasure chest he planted in an elderly woman's house. Possibly the worst part is that Mortamor wasn't satisfied even after the slaughter. No, instead, he rewinds time to right before the massacre and starts the whole thing over again. The people of Greedmore, until the party's intervention, have been unknowingly trapped in [[StableTimeLoop an endless cycle of deceit, death, and rebirth]], all because Mortamor loves watching his subjects suffer.

* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** While the DS remake ''does'' include the puns and accents that the Nintendo-published remakes (and IX) were known for, it was around 5 and 6 that Nintendo started toning them down.
** The DS and [=iOS=] remakes tried to alleviate Terry's problem of being OverratedAndUnderleveled.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: Terry is beloved in some circles for his cool {{Bishonen}} design and demeanor and hated in others for [[OverratedAndUnderleveled his subpar stats]] and for spending half the game as an antagonistic {{Jerkass}}.

** Nevan was largely ignored and even disliked by many players in the original release of the game due to his unappealing design and lack of presence in the plot, with his only major scene, his introduction, portraying him as a bratty InsufferableGenius. The remake's party chat function allows him to receive more characterization, establishing him as a much more earnest, perceptive and likable character overall. The passage of time also caused him to be looked upon more favorably from a purely gameplay perspective, and he is now generally viewed as being the better choice for the party than [[OverratedAndUnderleveled Terry]].
