** On an external level that's more a case of the movie being a victim of bad luck, there's a degree of fan apathy to the project due to Disney's buyout of Fox. While it hasn't explicitly been confirmed by Disney, it's incredibly likely that the ''X-Men'' setting will have a full ContinuityReboot to integrate the characters into the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse, aside from the non-''Film/{{Deadpool|2016}}''-related projects which are said to remain as-is for now. This would mean that ''Dark Phoenix'' likely '''won't''' get any significant follow-up and that this will be the end of the line for these versions of the characters instead of being the potential start of a new trilogy like originally planned.

** Reshoots and delays for ''Dark Phoenix'' occurred shortly after Disney announced its plans to acquire Fox's assets. This led many fans to believe that the reshoots and delays are a result of this impending buyout, possibly to tie the film in with the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse in some way. This was not helped at all by an AprilFoolsDay story reported by [=JoBlo=] ''that this would be the case''. * WinTheCrowd: Inverted, in this case. The announcement of the Disney-Fox deal and the likelihood that there will be a full-blown ContinuityReboot of the ''Franchise/XMen'' in the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse has led to some fans who would otherwise be excited about this project to be more apathetic toward it. Some even hoped that Fox would outright cancel the movie, even though it is economically-unfeasible for them to actually do so.

To rectify that, ''Dark Phoenix'' has a smaller cast, and Kinberg has promised that it will be more character-focused than its predecessor.
** The film will focus solely on the Dark Phoenix storyline, after ''The Last Stand'' was criticized for combining it with the "Cure" storyline from the comics.

** Many fans see adapting the Dark Phoenix Saga to be redundant, as the storyline was partially adapted in ''Film/XMenTheLastStand''. [[TruerToTheText While it plans to be a more faithful adaptation]] than the divisive ''The Last Stand'', these fans find the move to be lazy, feeling the creators at Fox used the time-travel plot of ''Film/XMenDaysOfFuturePast'' as an excuse to retread too much familiar ground, much like ''Film/StarTrekIntoDarkness''.
** This is also a common reaction to director Simon Kinberg's implication that the movie is going to be "grounded" and '''not''' emphasize the cosmic nature of the story (even if aliens will be involved), as ''The Last Stand'' already did a "grounded" take on the story and it was widely considered a disappointment for that reason (among others).
