** Dylan Lane was seen by many as overly smarmy on the first incarnation of the GSN version. When the pilot episode surfaced, many fans agreed Tim Vincent did a much better job. It is likely due to Lane's reputation that the second GSN version replaced him with Mike Catherwood. While Lane did return to host again in 2021, reception has been far more positive to his hosting this time around. (Notably, Lane seems far more relaxed and natural in the 2021 version.)

* WhatAnIdiot: Many contestants from the first GSN run weren't the sharpest tools in the shed, often failing to guess the right word with only one letter missing (and at least once when the word was fully exposed) or composing a sentence in the bonus round. The latter wasn't just because they gave dumb clues or answers, but sometimes the clue givers would mess up or giggle uncontrollably, wasting time for the contestant trying to guess the answers, and at least one team won a whopping $0 in the bonus round as a result.

* MagnificentBastard: Paul Shannon is an enigmatic man and the seeming head of the hydrogen project at the University of Chicago. In truth a government agent, likely CIA, Paul effortlessly manipulates the hero Eddie Kasalivich into trusting him and guides the pieces into place so he might gain knowledge of a deceased genius scientist's inventions. Disdaining the brutal methods of his monstrous associate Lyman Earl Collier, Paul is revealed to be manipulating Lyman as well, "retiring" him before allowing for the heroes to escape while getting away free and clear himself.
* WhatAnIdiot: Lyman Earl Collier's plan of erasing the results of the project is incredibly foolish and short-sighted, as it would likely have been much simpler to abduct him and steal his research, using a smaller explosion to make it look like an accident. Killing the first man to discover cheap, sustainable, and renewable energy and trying to completely erase the results of the experiment and then try to duplicate them without him is stupid and wasteful, even leaving out the mass-casualty explosion. If they couldn't replicate the results of the experiment, then they'd effectively destroyed any possibility of using that technology until another genius came along to figure it out. And depending on how long that took, it could be seriously damaging to the USA in the long run. Saying TheWorldIsNotReady isn't an excuse, since all America can do is hide the results of their own scientists, when it can easily be discovered by other scientists in other countries, ones less likely to share the results of their research and may be potentially hostile to the United States. After all, once it was proven possible, it would only be a matter of time before someone else accomplished it, and then America, lacking a genius capable of producing the same results, would rapidly fall behind. Any short-term economic disruption done by the discovery would be far outshone by the serious economic advantages that come from America no longer being reliant on foreign oil or other non-renewable power sources and being the forerunner for any new technology that results from the discovery.
