* TierInducedScrappy: The S36, specifically the "Evil Clown" variant, doesn't have a very pretty reputation within the community for what many perceive as it being very overpowered, worsened by its extremely low recoil and the fact that the Evil Clown version in particular was a free gift. Rendered irrelevant after the Gunsmith update as skin buffs no longer apply.

** Every Premium Pass following Season 1 has one more skin about midway through instead of just one.
** After many requests to have a free female skin due to all other female skins being locked behind LootBoxes, the Outrider - Arctic skin was released and can be obtained by linking a Call of Duty account. However, it was a limited-time event, and that skin still had its problems within the playerbase before it was eventually remodeled.
*** Season 4's Urban Tracker could be seen as a response to complaints about Outrider - Arctic's quality, due to being a guaranteed Premium Pass female skin with a cute model and proper eyes. Then there is also Vanguard in Season 7, which was given away for free by completing the daily login streak for the season.
*** The addition of Charly as the default female character in March 2021 update allows players, especially new ones, to choose a female character for completely free.
** The Season 3 Premium Pass is cut down from 100 tiers to 50, doing away with the grind of previous seasons. It's also made cheaper to reflect that (from 800 CP to 560).
** When the Battle Pass is divided between Standard Premium Pass and Deluxe Premium Pass (instant 10 tiers, progression boost, and later, exclusive cosmetic-only items), those who bought the standard premium pass will eventually have their CP ''one-hundred percent refunded through the premium rewards'' if they finish all the passes without paying for a tier or spending their CP elsewhere.
** More events for free, rarer cosmetics including character skins on global servers have been rolling out lately due to complaints of bias being shown towards Garena servers[[labelnote:*]]Garena servers would often have events or just straight up gifts in which players could have a chance to get ''whole character skins for free or for very cheap'', something that, up to that point, global servers only got about once[[/labelnote]].

** After the [=UL736=] and [=HS2126=] were added to Battle Royale and mostly disregarded, two more powerful weapons, the GKS and [=S36=] were added to the mode.

* CriticalResearchFailure: During the "Lighting Up the World" event around the game's worldwide release, claiming rewards would be accompanied by art of a character and a quote from them. * BrokenBase:
** Despite the game being free-to-play, the [[LootBoxes loot crates]], as always, have been quite.. ''controversial'', to say the least.
*** The biggest complaint is that the contents that most players would actually want, such as character and weapon skins, have ''extremely'' low odds and can take ''hundreds'' of crates to get the desired item. Many players have even accused Tencent of outright lying about the probability of gaining the rare skins, using ExactWords to trick players into believing that skins have the same odds as any of the other "blue" items (usually a high amount of the free credits or bigger weapon XP cards).
*** Taken further with the Halloween Lucky Draw event where the two rarest prizes can only be acquired after at least unlocking the other items, meaning the original odds were misleading. The event was updated to disclose how the drop rates change, but the damage was already done.
** The long-awaited Zombies mode also has its gripes within the fandom. However, the mode garnered enough of a fandom that the announcement that it was being removed in Season 5 was controversial.
*** The biggest complaint is the increased health of the zombies and the introduction of a buff system to accompany Perk-a-Colas. Without buying buffs, zombies can take ''much'' longer to kill than even their main game counterparts on higher rounds. Many players find this ridiculous as Colas are already meant to be "buffs" and the "buffs" in this mode are basically granting them strength that was already accessible to them in the main games.
** The Aerial Platform was met with mixed reviews from the community. Some liked that the spot is a reliable hot drop and has lots of high-tier items. However, others didn't see how it was different from other high-tier loot locations. Plus the fact that sometimes the weapon boxes aren't always loaded when the player drops there causes some players to avoid it completely.
** Some players are not too happy when previously exclusive skins (like from Premium Passes) are thrown onto the Credit Store. Similarly, there are those who were pretty livid when Gaz, Price, and Ghost - Stealth, all skins that were previously locked behind LootBoxes, were given out for free as part of a ''Call of Duty: Warzone'' promotion.
** Let's just say that not everyone is happy with the introduction of "Mythic" weapons. These weapons are similarly obtained through Lucky Draws, but once you obtain them, you need to spend ''[[UpToEleven more]]'' money on its upgrades. The price is pretty steep, to say the least. You'd need to spend a whopping ''500 US dollars'' in order to fully upgrade it. To put this into perspective, that's the price of a UsefulNotes/PlayStation5; there was even a small meme centered around the idea that you'd be better off just buying that and playing [[VideoGame/CallOfDutyBlackOpsColdWar the latest CoD release at the time]].

* UnexpectedCharacter: While initially the game consist of the best bits of the series, mostly on ''Videogame/CallOfDutyBlackOpsII'' and ''Videogame/CallOfDutyModernWarfare'' with focus on gameplay instead of plot, the introduction of story comics as well as Battle Pass characters, no doubt leading to this:

* UnexpectedCharacter: You can actually play as some of the villains in this game, including Makarov and Kravchenko.

* HypeBacklash: The Battle Royale mode promised a "dimensional invasion" in Season 3 on Valentine's Day. Many players were expecting an event on the scale of ''VideoGame/{{Fortnite}}''[='=]s live events, but pretty much all that happened was that the Aerial Platform was added to the map.

* MemeticBadass: Owners of the Merc 5 - Yellow Snake and AK-47 - Tank skins, due to how high the ranks required to gain those skins are (Master II in Battle Royale and Multiplayer, respectively) and how much of a grind they can be to achieve.

* UnexpectedCharacter: Logan Walker is playable here, despite the fact that [[VideoGame/CallOfDutyGhosts his game]] was one of the worst received entries in the franchise and that it ended with him being captured and taken away for torture.
