** [[https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/surprising-octeal/page-147-old-york/viewer?title_no=189198&episode_no=181 Page 147]] gives us the first good glimpse of the ruins underwater in York and it's full of references. The [[Webcomic/{{Lackadaisy}} Little Daisy Cafe]] is present. A veterinarian's office on the right features a familiar [[Webcomic/{{Girly}} cat-like creature]]. The building in the center is the "Hôtel Heuruex, Hôtel et centre de Rééducation". In English: [[WebAnimation/{{HazbinHotel}} Happy Hotel, Hotel and Rehabilitation Center]].

The first of a four-part series of webcomics, Surprising Octeal is a superhero webcomic following a young woman with octopus powers training to be a hero and find a cure for "[[WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity Power Madness]]", an ailment that largely seems to affect multi-limbed supers like her. As of 2023 the author has stated the series is being rebooted.

** Suzanne is apparently roomates with [[https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/surprising-octeal/page-32/viewer?title_no=189198&episode_no=21 Batgirl]] and dormed in a building named after [[Franchise/SpiderMan George Stacy]].

* TeensAreShort: Averted. During the flashback to Suzanne's high school days she's already hit her full height.

* ExcessiveEvilEyeshadow: When imagining herself as a villain Suzanne's headcannon has thicker eyelashes.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: Most characters in the comic use the same eye design. Suzanne, however, has distinctive cephalopod-like pupils. Another character with unique pupils is [[spoiler: Klipspringer, the scary woman who's been stalking Suzanne.]]

** Mentions of some event called "The Twins" appear sporadically in the comic, no mention of what they are.
** Character profiles shown on the comic seem to provide hints at major development for the characters such as Kimiko being afraid to [[ParalyzingFearOfSexuality show off her body]] for some reason. [[spoiler:[[https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/surprising-octeal/page-128-flaws/viewer?title_no=189198&episode_no=159 The scars on her sides and abdomen]] might have something to do with it.]]
** Some characters have shown up then seemingly don't get mentioned again despite seeming to be important, like a Knight Hero who seemingly dissolves into nothing. A character named [[AnimalThemeNaming Klipspringer]] has also been mention. [[spoiler: She finally appears on page 200 and she's huge and unnerving.]]

* KidHero: Mr Baumfree, who has the power of super durability, is shown to be working with several child supers, including the previously introduce Billy and Niles.
* LipstickAndLoadMontage: Suzanne is shown prepping her appearing multiple times in the comic.
* LivingOutAChildhoodDream: Though she pivoted towards marine science before getting a super power it's implied Suzanne wanted to be a hero as a child and the only thing that stopped her was not having a power.
* LoonyFriendsImproveYourPersonality: [[GenkiGirl Cheerful and hyper]] Kimiko is shaping up to be this with the much more grumpy and skittish Suzanne.

* NotAMorningPerson: Suzanne's morning routine is shown more than once in the comic. If she's just barely waking up her appearance is usually a bit messy.

* MeaningfulName: Several of the characters seem to have surnames that allude to them somehow. [[ShockAndAwe Kimiko's]] last name tranlates to "Sting Fairy" and [[PlayingWithFire Lina's]] last name relates to fires. But of course the most blunt seems to be Suzanne's last name [[AnimalThemeNaming Incirrina]], which is simply one of the scientific names for octopus.

** In general, "[[WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity Power Madness]]" has been shown to be linked to having additional limbs. So far, Suzanne is the only multi-limbed hero in existence who ''hasn't'' gone crazy.
* MustHaveCaffeine: Suzanne has several crazy-looking machines on her desk in her room... as well as coffee pot which she drinks from every morning.

** In the same hospital Suzanne is watching a video on her laptop where someone says, [[WebVideo/GameGrumps "You'll find one of the ghosts parked in a 1975 Eldorado"]]

* MaleGaze: While not overt, the comic seems to pay a lot of attention to Suzanne's [[HartmanHips backside]].

* ADateWithRosiePalms: After multiple encounters with her male co-trainees makes her too flustered to focus on studying Suzanne pulls out a device called "Ms. Vibranella" and a blank panel implies that [[GRatedSex time passes]], after which she is in a different outfit and her hair has become a bit unkempt. Interestingly it's not only NOT treated as a joke but also spoken of as healthy and positive with the author even commenting it should be de-stigmatized.

* SlapstickKnowsNoGender: Song (a character made to be kind of unlikable) gets hit with a little physical humor when Jabali unknowingly whacks her with a door.

* SlapstickKnowsNoGender: Even being the MC, Suzanne doesn't get immunity from [[https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/surprising-octeal/page-154-running-on-all-8s/viewer?title_no=189198&episode_no=194 ramming her head]] into a low hanging ceiling.
