* BrickJoke:

* ChildhoodFriends: Malori and Cerik. It turned out, he was actually the reason she got into adventuring in the first place, after sympathizing with her taboo interest in demons.
* ChildProdigy: Malori has power way beyond what she should for a student who isn't actually a licensed adventurer yet. This is because a masochistic demon captured her and made her fry him with fire magic repeatedly just so he could get off on it. After two weeks of this, she was massively overpowered from all the experience gain. Cerik is the next highest level after her in the academy, and Malori is ''well'' above his level (60 to 89).
* CombatStilettos: Velverosa wears high heels and has no trouble fighting in them.
* ComedicSociopathy: Malori has no qualms about bringing parties into the tower to be killed just to get her to the top floor. She's also willing to fry them herself if there's any chance they'd harm Velverosa.

* CoverInnocentEyesAndEars: In one of the non-canon extras, Vel covers Malori's ears when Melathia starts reading out one of her erotic fanfics.

* DistractedByTheSexy: Even fighting Velverosa, Malori is distracted by her graceful movements. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Malori is stunned when Velverosa breaks out of an ice prison, which coincidentally has her flexing her impressive arm muscles and showing off her chiseled abs.

* EntertaininglyWrong: As seen in DramaticIrony, the King believes Malori must hate Velverosa due to how many times she has attempted to fight her.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Velverosa is absolutely ''furious'' when she finds out that Malori hired adventurers as CannonFodder with the intention of [[UnfriendlyFire terminating them]] after they'd served their purpose, and makes this clear with a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech.
* FantasticRacism: Neither humans or demons really like each other, for the most part. At one point, Malori suggests the king might be able to find a peaceful solution since the current Demon Queen hasn't done anything besides defending herself, but the king goes on a rant about how all demons must be destroyed so that humans can reign supreme. Even the other adventurers find this disturbing.

* InVinoVeritas: Velverosa is ''much'' more open about her feelings and affections towards Malori when she is ''extremely'' drunk on wine.
* IronButtMonkey: Since they were kids, Cerik has been getting the worst of the abuse and consequences of their adventuring, largely due to Malori's negligence or outright abusing him for her own purposes. Fortunately, he is quite capable of surviving most everything the world can throw at him. This is best illustrated by Malori healing him by throwing a ''glass'' potion at Cerik's head, dealing him -1 damage, before it shatters and dumps the healing liquid on him.

** Both Fenn and Cerik are in love with Melathia.

* NonHeteronormativeSociety: The story has a CastFullOfGay, and even the [[{{Transgender}} princess Leora formerly being Prince Leo]] doesn't seem to be an issue. WordOfGod says that the society basically assumes that everyone is pansexual by default.
* ParentalNeglect: Velverosa's parents were constantly busy with their duties, saddling her with the goal of becoming Demon Queen in childhood, but leaving all the love, support, and training to their staff.

* PrecociousCrush: Malori's been kissing wanted posters of Velverosa at least since she was seven.

* RelationshipUpgrade: After 70 chapters [[spoiler:while Malori still isn't sure how Queen Vel truly feels about her, she at least knows that she doesn't hate her as she falls asleep in Queen Vel's arms]]. By chapter 71, [[spoiler:Malori is now an esteemed guest at the Demon Tower, and when she asks for a hug from Vel, she willingly gives it.]] By season 2, [[spoiler:Mal is having tea and snacks with Velverosa, and the pleasure is quite obviously, unambiguously mutual.]]

* TechnicalVirgin: Velverosa believes that since she has always been the dominant one in every relationship she's ever been in, that means she's still "pure." The narration points out that this is obviously untrue.

* SummonEverymanHero: The human king tried to summon a hero from another world, with the visuals comparing it to a gatcha game--they had a ninety percent chance of getting a BoringButPractical ordinary hero. Unfortunately, the ritual apparently failed, and they never found their hero. [[spoiler:Except Cerik looks ''very'' uncomfortable with the conversation...]]

* AbsoluteCleavage:
** The lamia Melathia's [[Film/MontyPythonAndTheHolyGrail huge tracts of land]] are covered by a top that is only slightly less revealing than pasties.
** In Season 2, Episode 20, Malori is tied up and brought before Velverosa, who turns out to be wearing a nightgown that's open nearly to her hips.

* CharmPerson: Vel theorizes that Malori might be a demon charmer, which would explain why everyone in the tower loves her. Vel is worried, because even knowing that gives her no protection. [[spoiler:She is, though Val being the Demon Queen renders her at least resistant]].

* DarkAndTroubledPast: Both Malori and Velverosa have their own.
** Malori's [[spoiler:biological parents sold her to slavery in a WretchedHive of a town, and she ended up being the sole survivor of said town after Velverosa torched it to the ground and inadvertently saved her. She was eventually adopted, only to lose her adoptive father some time before the start of the story.]]
** Velverosa had [[spoiler:parents who were largely absent from her life, one of her only friends being her beloved elven maid/caretaker, Fillonne. After Vel falls in love with a human who used and abused her powers, however, Fillonne is fired, Vel loses her friend, and her innocence, now believing that humans and demons may never co-exist.]]

* FriendlyEnemy: Malori has ascended the Demon Tower so many times that the demon bosses below Queen Velverosa just let her through, and in fact support her pursuit of their queen's heart! Said queen is not pleased at this.

* HazyFeelTurn: [[spoiler: Malori joins the demon side later on. It's not a shift in her morality, just a realization that she can do more good (and be closer to Vel) if she works with them.]]
* HeelRealization: After her extremely jerky behavior towards just about everyone, Malori realizes that she's been so focused on Vel that she treated her best friend Cedric, her demon friends, and Vel herself abominably and goes into a TenMinuteRetirement.

** Cerik is a talented artist.
** Malori is noted to be a surprisingly good cook.

* InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons: Season 2 Chapter 5 has Fhaust state that Vel is a dragon, something only hinted at in Melathia's fanfics before, indicating that "demon" is simply a catch-all term for all non-human species, which includes orcs, lamias, and of course, dragons.

* MadeASlave: Malori, [[spoiler:in her childhood, done by her own ''biological parents.'']]
* MagicKnight: While Malori is a mage by class, by book 2, she's learned to use buff spells and sword-crafting magic (the latter copied from Queen Vel) to fight in melee as well.
* MayflyDecemberRomance: Malori is barely an adult at 18 years old, while Vel is a seemingly-immortal demon who was grown before Mal was even born. Which is why she is fully supportive of a classmate's romantic interest in men (specifically, the human king) [[MayDecemberRomance old enough to be his grandfather]].

* NobleDemon: Literal example aside, Queen Vel is shown to have an ironclad sense of honor. She calls out Malori for not having the same and team-killing her own hirelings just to get into her pants, and later questions whether she herself is doing the right thing [[spoiler: using Malori for her mana]].
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: According to Fhaust in season 2, Vel is a dragon, despite this she is completely human-looking other than having horns, a tail, occasionally wings, and pointed ears. It turns out she can just transform between a gigantic, monstrous form and her usual humanoid self.

* PlayingWithFire: Fire magic is Malori's specialty.

* PunchClockVillain: None of the demons are particularly evil. They fight adventurers because that's what they're supposed to do. Well, and because they're rather put-out that humans keep attacking them for loot and experience.

* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Vel appears to be in her twenties, but is over 200.

* SentimentalDrunk: Vel gets very handsy while drunk, and at one point even giggles and says Malori is acting like her wife.
* SheIsNotMyGirlfriend: Velverosa insists Malori means nothing to her... while her tail is visibly wagging. Her underlings just want her to finally admit her attraction. She also feels a sudden, intense, inexplicable bout of depression when Malori decides to give up on her, and goes to great lengths and risk to the tower to try and get her back when it seems she's returned.
* ShipperOnDeck: Vel's lieutenant Melathia is especially enthusiastic about getting them together, to the point of writing fanfic about them. The rest of the generals aren't ''quite'' as extreme as Melathia, [[spoiler:but nonetheless still all offer their congratulations and approval assuming that Malori and Vel are dating now in chapter 71 (they technically aren't). Diannos went so far as to make sure they did not separate the two as they carried them back to the tower.]]

* SingleTargetSexuality: In Malori's written words, her sexuality is "Uhh IDK I only like Queen Vel." When she encounters Vel disguised as a human, she can't initially understand why she's reacting like she is when she only does so with Vel, and even says that she doesn't think that she can love anyone but her.

* SnakePeople: Melathia is a lamia. Which happens to coincide perfectly with Cerik's particular fixation.
* StalkerWithACrush:
** Malori's primary hat. Her friend Cerik tries to call her out on it but she doesn't care, at least not until later in the story when things take a dramatic turn.
** In Season Two, possibly as a form of karma, Malori gets one of her own in the form of [[spoiler: Princess Leora, after the king summons Malori to a royal audience and promises her "anything" in exchange for killing the Demon Queen. * TeamMom: Melathia for the demons -- she's mainly concerned with trying to get Vel and Malori together rather than her job defending the tower. The author and her assistants nicknamed her "Titty Mom."
* TooKinkyToTorture:
** How Malori got her extreme power so young. She was captured by a demon that gets off on being fried with fire magic, and simply wanted her to keep zorching him repeatedly. And supplied free mana potions so she wouldn't have to stop. By the time he'd had enough, she had leveled way up and her fire magic skill had been cranked UpToEleven.
** Malori, in turn, is perfectly fine being exploded as long as it's Vel doing it. This also extends to being harmed by her in more conventional, physical ways, as the first thing she thinks of when an adventurer punches her in the stomach is how Vel hits harder and is ''way'' more enjoyable to be hurt by. Other notable incidents include her... interesting reaction to being halfway inside dragon-form Vel's mouth and at risk of being bitten in half or eaten alive, and responding to an unquestionably angry Vel strangling her with "Harder."
* TrappedInAnotherWorld: It's implied that [[spoiler:Cerik]] may be from our universe, since he calls Vel a [[{{Tsundere}} "tsundere"]] (to Malori's confusion) and got rather nervous when the queen started talking about their SummonEverymanHero ritual.

As much as the Malori's antics frustrate Cerik and put him in harm's way, they have both been shown to care about each other, such as Malori making sure Cerik can safeguard the precious [[ItMakesSenseInContext shed snakeskin he stole from Melathia's room]], Cerik spending three days looking for the missing Malori after [[spoiler:Velverosa nearly permanently killed her]], and Cerik calling Malori out on her stalker behaviour, and Malori following it to everyone's benefits. They may frequently hate each other, and sometimes be the one that personally sent them to the Church in a coffin, but they care for each other like blood siblings.

* UncertifiedExpert: Malori is way more powerful than most professional adventurers she meets, but hasn't actually graduated from the academy yet.
* UnscrupulousHero: Malori's goals range from perfectly acceptable (marrying Vel) to laudable (trying to stop the war between humans and demons). Her ethics in pursuing those goals are initially nonexistent, and her behavior includes [[StalkerWithACrush stalking Vel]] and [[UnfriendlyFire teamkilling]]; the latter being [[EveryoneHasStandards so bad]] that even ''Vel'' [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech goes off on her for it]]. She starts shaping up later.

* VitriolicBestBuds: When push comes to shove, Malori and Cerik always have each other's backs. But most of the time, it's just pushing and shoving. Mostly lambasting each other's romantic preferences (with no small amount of irony, since they both have the hots for demons).
* WhenYouComingHomeDad: As mentioned under ParentalNeglect, Velverosa's parents were oftentimes too busy with their official duties that constantly took them to everywhere in their domain, being home for only brief periods of time.

* WouldNotShootACivilian: [[spoiler: When she attacked a village full of slavers, Vel cut young Malori's chains and let her live, because she was a slave and a child and not one of those who were responsible for enslaving demons.]]

* YuriFan: Melathia writes yuri fanfic about Vel and Malori all the time, titled "Lilies in the Demon Tower."

* {{Fetish}}: Cerik has a fetish for snake women and stockings. When he meets Melathia, the first lamia he's seen since his first encounter with them as a child, he sheds ManlyTears, then sneaks into her bedroom and steals a shed snakeskin to snuggle with.
