* What exactly does he have to live for? The later seasons could be him in Hell experiencing torture such as Judith being a {{jerkass sue}}, his love life always ending badly, his son being more selfish like Charlie, etc.
** Alternatly, Alan is [[EveryoneIsJesusInPurgatory trapped in purgatory]]. He can only leave once he mans up and gains the courage to tell off Charlie, Judith, Evelyn and Jake and set out on his own, casting off his self-imposed shackles and finally become free. His method of death is irrelevant.

[[WMG: Alan almost got shot because he tried to cheat someone]]
* During the episode, "The War Against Gingivitis", Berta asks Alan to deliver money to a guy she owes named Shirmey, but Shirmey tries to shoot Alan because he doesn't have all of it. But it's also possible that the amount of money there was even less than what Berta meant to give him. Keep in mind, this is '''''Alan Harper''''' we're talking about, who's proven countless times to be about as trustworthy with money as a fat kid with keys to a candy store. Is it really hard to believe that he tried to steal some of the money meant for Shirmey? He did that to his own son later that season!

revenge? There's also the fact that the pipe that supposedly started the fire was miraculously unscathed, so it might not have been what started it.
