It would certainly bring a lot of lapsed fans back. When he arrives he'll learn that Team Valor, Team Mystic, and Team Instinct have come to dominate the local trainer community (they'll be portrayed as mostly decent people driven to conflict by loyalty to their own teams). He'll get three companions, one from each team, and over the course of the season they'll learn to cooperate. The season will end with the three teams coming together to fight Giovanni.
