It is known that Meia was attempted to be drowned, only to wake up still alive, and Cid and Garland are surprisingly healthy considering that they're both Warriors Of Light from an unknown time in the past. I strongly suspect that it's impossible for someone to die except when they are no longer relevant, whereupon their real age catches up with them, and they cease to exist.

[[WMG: Palamecia is an alternate version of Earth, trapped in medieval stasis by its curse.]]
If you look at the world map, Palamecia looks a lot like Earth. And in Chapter 8, the stone blocks forming the Labyrinths look suspiciously like upside-down skyscrapers...

For starters, the world is named Palamecia, which is the name of TheEmpire from Final Fantasy II. While this could just be a MythologyGag, keep in mind that the Emperor was able to conquer both hell ''and'' heaven after he died. Perhaps he's been sealed away, and he's been exerting what influence he can on the Blanks in order to pursue an unknown agenda of some sort. Plus, Wol does kinda look like Firion...

[[WMG: The locations you walk through are partially illusions, conjured by the power of Vox]]
When you enter Sarah's chambers, you smell rot hanging round the room, and Cid makes it fairly clear in his flashbacks that the kingdom was practically ruined under the rule of Chaos. I strongly suspect that, when you visit the areas in the second arc, some of them will be in a state of ruin.
[[WMG: Once someone is part of the Prophecy, they are effectively immortals, losing their memory of dying]]
