In the Great Year's spring, they start coming down with mange, losing much of their insulating fur and thus escaping death by heat stroke. In the autumn, their pelts start growing out of control. These events don't actually prove fatal for very many of them, so the humans have never noticed it's happening to their ancient rivals.
