Instead of becoming latex beasts, their hosts (humans) began to die. Nothing could stop this thing as it spread. This is why they turned to the goo latex all of things for salvation, knowing their unsolvable problem could only be solved by it. It would be [[CaptainObvious a massive scandal]] if word got out this was the government's fault as they scrambled to develop assimilation processes that wouldn't kill the host. Unfortunately, on the day of the riots, the people did find out.
