* He seems to gain free will and realize something's up near the later parts of the series, and especially after Gabby's gone, perhaps that could be him gaining his angel status back and being able to interact with the fourth wall? Or he's just that scared of Gabby he only waits until she's gone to break character?

[[WMG:Angel Gabby ascended to a higher rank of angel.]]
In Case 3, Francis has a drawing of a “biblically accurate” angel hare with multiple eyes that he drew on Easter that he saw from a vision (remember that the EasterEpisode is where Gabby is last seen). This could reference the highest choir of angel, made up of the ranks of Seraphim, Cherubim, and Ophanim (Thrones). Maybe because Gabby succeeded in guiding Jonah, that she was promoted to a higher rank of angel, hence what the drawing implies.

He's clearly scared of the angels - and, as seen in the first Gabby-less letters segment, when Gabriel and Francis first met (when Francis was at his lowest point and begged for help), she used the full power of her angelic voice. Francis also revealed that Gabriel believes that everyone deserves a second chance. According to Christianity, when you're human, either you're saved or you're not, so that rules out Francis being a human soul working on his redemption. So Francis may be a fallen angel who's currently working toward that goal via community service.

At first, he was going along with the script like nothing was out of the ordinary, but at some point he seemed to realize what was happening. It possibly had to do with the third and final letters video, wherein one of the letters caused the cartoon to go haywire. As shown in the Easter episode, Francis keeps painting esoteric symbols, perhaps as a warning? And in the recent videos, he is trying to follow the script, albeit with Zag in the lead role. He does sound a bit more anxious than usual, perhaps now realizing that something is wrong with this picture...

* Angel Zag has shown himself to be behind the times (no big surprise - as the head of angelic messengers and guardians, he may not have worked in the field since he voiced that [[Literature/BookOfExodus talking bush]] in God's name) - he thinks Wreath still airs the show and isn't aware that the show isn't being broadcast in a way other than via TV. So it's not unthinkable that 'hardboiled detective' is the best bit of cultural language he can think of for what he's doing - although luckily for him it's an enduring concept.

Hence his chiselled face shape, his world-weary demeanor and his black-and-white-movie grey fur. This is because he's literally playing detective, trying to figure out where Gabby went. And, of course, note that the episodes of Season 2 are not Tapes, but Cases.

* Angel Michael (likely nicknames are Mike or Mikey). He seems to have a more serious and apathetic personality compared to Angel Gabby and appeared in the three angel hares mural (seen in the second letters video) as the tallest out of the three which would suggest he’s the leader of the angel hares, much like ArchangelMichael is the leader of the archangels.

Which explains why they both share a name and have a “messenger” role (and no, this is not related to the [[WebVideo/TheMandelaCatalogue Mandela Gabriel]]). Gabriel likely could’ve shapeshifted into a cute angel hare so that he wouldn’t be so intimidating to young Jonah. For a child, it’s most likely going to be less scary to meet a cartoon anthropomorphic winged lagomorph rather than what would look like a winged stranger.
