* ImagineSpot: There are a few in the "Meeting has to wait" option as John and Jane ponder what they would be like if they were different.

* TheNineties: The hideous fashions and dreadful attempts at early Photoshopping let this game be dated very, very accurately to the early '[=90s=]. Plus, the horribly pixelated pictures and compressed sound will easily remind people of the time when "CD quality" picture and sound was actually a ''pejorative'' term.

* TakeThatAudience: Almost all the decision screens in the PC version roast the player (e.g. "Without a sex drive." and "You give new meaning to the word loser.").

** In the "Turn poor Jane away!" option, Jane chews out the player for selecting said option.

It was rather unexpectedly announced at E3 2021 that Limited Run Games would be re-releasing it for UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch, UsefulNotes/PlayStation4, UsefulNotes/PlayStation5, and PC at some point in the future. It was later [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUWU1v3zvEE re-revealed]] in 2023 as ''Plumbers Don't Wear Ties: The Definitive Edition'', which features "nicer" graphics and new extra features such as interviews and audio commentaries. ''The Definitive Edition'' is set for a September 2023 release.

''Plumbers Don't Wear Ties'' is a text-adventure game which can also serve as one of the few early Western examples of the {{Visual Novel}}, originally released for the PC in 1993 by United Pixtures (in their [[OneBookAuthor only known release]]), and for the [[UsefulNotes/ThreeDOInteractiveMultiplayer 3DO]] in 1994 by Kirin Entertainment (in their first [[CreatorKiller and second-to-last release]]). The game is a [[CoversAlwaysLie self-proclaimed full motion video]] game, as they want you to believe. It's actually little more than a slideshow of {{random events|Plot}}, featuring "[[PizzaBoySpecialDelivery a plumber]], a DaddysGirl, chickens, [[CityMouse crazed yuppies]], [[BadBoss evil bosses]], pandas, {{shower scene}}s, [[CoolCar race cars]], [[NaughtyNuns a nun]]".[[note]]¿ʇᴉ ʇǝפ[[/note]]

* CreditsGag: Jane's father (played by Harry Armis, who also plays the first narrator) doesn't have an actor billing; his screen instead says "Name withheld pending notification of next of kin".

* TheStinger: The end credits show a photo of the two narrators (Thelma's face is pixelated) with a caption saying "Producer and friend... Now serving hard time because of this production.", then two more stills of the two driving off in a red Ferrari (with Armis wearing his chicken mask and Thelma in sunglasses). Then a cast photo of Fasulo, Basone, Bokor, and Armis appears.

** One of the alternate covers for the Limited Run Games re-release features Jane drawn in {{Animesque}} style. Needless to say, there is no anime artwork in the game itself.

* DreamSequence: A bizarre one at the beginning, set during a UsefulNotes/{{NASCAR}} event at Saugus Speedway and inverted. A panda in an open-wheel car is among the racers, and Jane can also be seen.

* LoveAtFirstSight: Deciding you want to marry a woman you've never talked to that you just bumped into in a car park is not generally a recipe for fun.

* MsFanservice: Jane. She has rather large breasts, and her body gets shown off quite bit in the opening ShowerScene, as well as when she turns into a {{dominatrix}} after picking the "She'll do anything to get the job" option.

* NarrativeFiligree: When the game isn't being intentionally surreal, it's mostly just mundane. Eg John and Jane's morning routines, which go on for way too long and add nothing to the plot.

* BreakingTheFourthWall: While pressuring her into having kids, Jane's father acknowledges the previous scene where John's mother did the same thing.

* LiveActionCutscene: The pre-intro cutscene does actually qualify for being full-motion video, which probably makes the subsequent slideshow presentation afterwards more jarring.

* LingerieScene: Jane strips herself down to her BlackBraAndPanties while wearing [[HighClassGloves black opera gloves]]. And not only that, but she also takes out a WhipOfDominance and KinkyCuffs to give her a DressedLikeADominatrix vibe.

** Earlier, she suddenly switches from a black dress to her dominatrix outfit halfway through the opening FMV.

* ChangingClothesIsAFreeAction: During the scene where Jane is being chased by Thresher, she's wearing nothing but a bra and a skirt. When the chase goes outside, though, she's suddenly fully clothed. Then, later in the same scene, her shirt comes off ''again''.

* StylisticSuck: The trailer for the 2021 UpdatedRerelease by Limited Run Games revels in the original game's notoriety; the infamous [[CensorBox Censor Giant Nose]] is plastered everywhere, the quotes are all terrible reviews that the original game got back in the day and it still has the shoddy audio quality of the original.

* BigBad: Paul Mark Thresher is Jane's perverted boss who spends the game chasing her and trying to rape her.

* ItsAWonderfulFailure: Most videos lead to this. As well as the "[[GoldenEnding Hollywood ending]]", you can get the "Asexual", "Hired", "Not Hired", "S&M", "Gay", "Indecent Proposal" and "Nun" endings... there's far more bad endings than good.
