Moving tropes

* TheComicallySerious
** Not only does Sachi do whatever she’s asked completely seriously, but she also has a surprisingly wicked tongue on her.
** Similarly, Yumiko always acts dignified and aloof, but she’s pretty goofy when given the chance.

* CoolBigSis: Amane likes to be seen as the big sister figure. She even asks Yuuji to treat her like a big sister [[spoiler:since she feels it’s her fault he doesn’t have one anymore.]]
* CordonBleughChef: Despite making food such as an entire loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with salad, Michiru’s food is surprisingly edible. Not great, but not bad.
* CosmeticCatastrophe: When it comes to makeup, only Amane regularly wears any. Yumiko manages to competently apply some when directed, Michiru puts on five different false eyelashes since she thinks they’ll make her look tsundere (but probably really just because she got bored) while Makina looks like a goth clown. Sachi… [[DiscretionShot we don’t get to see]] Sachi’s overwhelming failure because the girls say they would feel bad for Sachi if Yuuji saw her.
* CovertPervert: Though at first she seems to be the one modest female in the story, it turns out Yumiko just has the sense to hide her interest. She probably thinks more about sex than the secretly timid [[LovableSexManiac Amane]]. The only one to really catch on is Sachi who says pretty bluntly that if you want to keep your internet searches secret you should probably put a password longer than six characters on your computer.
* CrazyPrepared: Sachi has everything prepared. If asked for something she doesn’t have, she’ll immediately go get it and put it into her specialty storage locker.
* CruelToBeKind: Michiru’s [[spoiler:transplanted personality]] tries to make everything easier for her. Much to her surprise, Yuuji refuses to play along and makes Michiru do her own difficult work. Doesn’t make even that easy for her. Considering Michiru’s earlier insecurities, he’s clearly doing it on purpose. The result is still him forcing Michiru to embarrass herself at length and repeatedly when he could make it easy for her or at least play dumb and ignore Michiru’s guardian completely.
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight
** Michiru is slightly uneasy regarding Yuuji since his background is so mysterious. In Amane’s route, before giving her approval she tells Amane that if he turns out to be a secret agent, spy, terrorist or something it’s not her fault Amane got involved with him. As should be clear from this point despite it never being stated, Yuuji is exactly that sort of person.
** Makina’s interpretations of everyone’s character is occasionally spot on. For example, claiming that Yumiko is distant now but secretly wants to play the long suffering OnlySaneMan. Completely true.
* CuteLittleFangs: Given Michiru’s attempts to act tsundere, maybe the little pointy tooth is also an affectation.
* CuttingTheKnot: In Sachi's backstory, she was tasked with canceling a test. Lacking any other means [[spoiler:she set the school on fire.]] When brought up in the present, [[spoiler:fire isn't enough, so they blow up the school instead. However, it's actually just to make Sachi realize she shouldn't be following orders like that by having her destroy something she values.]]

* ADateWithRosiePalms
** Nearly attempted by Amane when she sneaks into Yuuji’s room and doesn’t see him there. A disinterested Yuuji had entered the room behind her and upon seeing her simply went to the fridge to get a drink while wondering if he should let her know he was actually there. It’s also a decently frequent topic of discussion.
*** In Yumiko’s route [[spoiler:he seems to have learned his lesson and manages to defuse the situation without letting her know he was awake the whole time. Until the next morning, anyway.]]
** Though he doesn’t appear to have caught on, he clearly walks in on Chizuru doing something similar when he barges in intending to ask permission for the class to go to the beach.

* DeadpanSnarker: When accosted by police, Yuuji moves between bare basic compliance, absolute silence and heavy sarcasm.
* DeclarationOfProtection: [[spoiler: Kazuki repeatedly says that she'll save Amane from their situation, even if it costs her own life, during Amane's flashback.]]

* DefrostingIceQueen: Yumiko, naturally. In her route, she defrosts so much that she eventually turns into complete mush. Outside it, she simply mellows out like Makina said she would.

* TheDitz: Michiru tends to be pretty flaky and doesn’t seem too bright, though the issues she’s had with stress in the past certainly don’t help her in the present.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Michiru apparently hates both cinnamon and sour things, though she’s convinced herself that drinking a horribly sour Vitamin C drink is good for her.
* DoggedNiceGirl: Amane confesses pretty early and lets it be known that she’s still interested from time to time, but for the most part tries not to get in the way or anything.

* DrivesLikeCrazy: Amane is not to be trusted with a vehicle. Get her excited and she’ll start street racing.

* DudeShesLikeInAComa: [[spoiler:Of all people, Yumiko begins ‘massaging’ Yuuji in what she assumes to be his sleep, much to his confusion.]]

* EmotionlessGirl: Sachi’s mood never varies from a low level polite friendliness. No anger, no joy, no sadness, no stress. It starts to worry Yuuji.

* {{Expy}}: Sachi seems to have a strong basis in the character of [[VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}} Hisui]]. They have the same eye and hair colors, both dress as maids and have similar attitudes. [[spoiler:More tellingly, however, is that the personalities of have taken the same one eight turn from being a GenkiGirl when they were the friend of the main character to near EmotionlessGirl.]]
* ExtremeDoormat: Sachi will do absolutely anything you ask her to. She has not refused a request once in the entire time she’s gone to Mihama. Even joking requests are taken absolutely seriously, which can even put her in danger. She actively shies away from making her own decisions or setting the goals or actions of the group.
* EvilStoleMyFaith: Yuuji calmly and clearly states his own atheism, but unlike much of what he says it appears to be nothing more than an opinion and not necessarily something the audience is supposed to believe. It’s simply a conclusion he reached based on his own harsh experiences. [[spoiler:The heart donor girl pretty flatly calls him out on acting so confident about it when he has no experience in the matter. She is, after all, sort of proof that it’s not as simple as he thinks if nothing else.]]
* EyesAlwaysShut: Sakurai, [[spoiler: one of the basketball club girls that were stranded during Amane's flashback.]]

* FacePalm:
** When Makina asks if Yuuji will be her new papa, he begins massaging his eyebrows.
** During Yumiko's route, after she and Yuuji come back to the dorm after a downpour, this is his reaction when Amane tell him not to "do" her while she has a cold.

* FashionableAsymmetry: Makina’s socks never match.

* ForcedToWatch: [[spoiler:Makina is forced to watch as her kidnappers kill her father. To add insult to injury, they leave her there for six days to watch as her father's body rots in front of her.]]
* {{Foil}}: The friendly, social Michiru plays the foil to the gloomy, isolated Yumiko [[spoiler:though it’s actually in their basic similarity rather than their differences: Both have severe abandonment issues and merely cope with it in different ways.]] Because of this, their personalities are noted to clash a lot.

* ForgottenChildhoodFriend: [[spoiler:Sachi was Yuuji’s only friend before his life turned to complete shit. She remembers, he doesn’t.]]
* FridgeLogic: The concept of the trope is explained InUniverse [[spoiler: by Kazuki to Amane]] as "The reminiscence effect" during her flashback, where the analysis of the information becomes easier after some time has passed, after the brain creates new connections at the processing of the memory.
* TheGadfly: Yuuji spends a lot of his time picking on the girls, but he doesn’t seem to be doing it on purpose about half of the time. It seems to be a special favorite of his to take people’s jokes seriously.
* GenderBlenderName: Yuuji’s sister was called Kazuki, a fairly masculine name, something a certain classmate picked up on.
* GenericCuteness: Michiru seems to be a victim of this. The other girls are noted at several points to be quite attractive while Michiru is trying to make herself stand out more by dyeing her hair and acting tsundere. By appearances, however, she’s about on par with the rest apart from the goofy faces she makes.

memory.

* GirlishPigtails: Michiru attempts to cultivate a tsundere image and first bleaches her hair and then puts it in twintails to complete it.
* GiverOfLameNames
** Michiru names the stray cat she sort of adopted Kittymeow (Nekonya) though she at least realizes this is a terrible name. Eventually, she grudgingly admits that maybe the cat is sorta kinda hers, but that she’s been calling it Kittymeow [[SubvertedTrope because she doesn’t want to give it a real name]] and get attached. [[DoubleSubversion Then she starts calling it Meowmmel]] as a portmanteau of Kittymeow and Rommel.
** Invoked by Yuuji to make sure Michiru never calls him by a nickname again. He starts calling her Mitcher and all the other girls similarly annoying, lazy things based off their real names and she just can’t take it.
* GoodParents: Amane's parents are implied to genuinely care for her and wish her the best. Although they are mostly passed over, Amane only ever says good things about them.

That is indeed a product of translation. Koestl always translated a specific sentence ending tic in that manner and it\'s not exclusive to him.

* {{Buttmonkey}}
** Michiru is frequently the butt of jokes, though she gets genuinely upset about it once or twice. [[spoiler:She’s actually playing the clown since it at least lets her feel useful is she can amuse people.]]
** Chizuru appears less, but when she does most of the conversation will end up being a barrage of jokes at her expense.

* CannotKeepASecret: You can ask Sachi to do pretty much anything and she’ll handle it for you, but one thing she can’t seem to do is keep her mouth shut. No matter how much you beg or plead.
* CannotTellAJoke: Kazuki, Yuuji’s sister, could not tell a funny joke to save her life. Delivery, timing and content were entirely warped.
* CatchPhrase
** ‘The scales have fallen from my eyes’ is an expression that is generally viewed as Sachi’s, though she only uses it about half a dozen times throughout the story, most of them early on.
** May be a product of the translation, but "That a fact..." can very well be Yuuji's, since he repeated that sentence to various types of moments.
* CaughtTheHeartOnHisSleeve: At the end of a date with Sachi and Yuuji, she admits that this was probably the happiest day of her life and grabs on to his sleeve since she doesn’t want to go home yet.
* ChickMagnet: It’s hinted that Yuuji is probably quite popular with girls, though considering the small cast size it’s difficult to tell. What is clear, though, is that there’s some UST not only with the girls, but also with the principal and even JB.
* ChildProdigy
** Makina considers herself stupid, but Yuuji quickly discovers that she has a photographic memory and she can actually be quite witty. [[spoiler:She did better before watching her father die and rot in front of her.]]
** Kazuki, Yuuji's sister, was smart enough to give Yuuji the impression that true genius is probably not really worth it. She could memorize books as images and read them in her head later, was an instant expert at most things she tried and was a very clever planner.
* ChristmasCake: Chizuru is still single, a bit of a prickly issue for her. She and Yumiko share a moment reflecting on this in the common route since she can see Yumiko ending up the same way if she keeps being too timid around Yuuji.
* ClassClown: Michiru acts like a spaz [[spoiler:because even amusing others with her own failure lets her feel a little less useless.]]

Moving some tropes to the character page. Just a few for the moment, though.

* TheAce: Sachi is intelligent, athletic, dutiful, domestic and even a hard worker.
* ACupAngst
** Michiru is pretty touchy about her chest size. Her only consolation is comparing herself to Makina.
** In Amane’s flashback, [[spoiler:Kazami Kazuki]] basically said she declined to offer joint bathing to Amane because the comparison between the two would depress her. Mind you, this was during early middle school. [[spoiler:She was just making excuses, though, and was secretly building a stash in the woods.]]

* AllGiveAndNoTake: Yuuji suspects that Michiru is acting as selfish as possible towards Sachi precisely to see how much she can get away with. Apparently quite a lot. [[SubvertedTrope However]], she does have a way of stepping in with really bad lies to help Sachi feel better when she messes up. There’re also a lot of little things that she takes care of that Yuuji doesn’t notice.

* AloofDarkhairedGirl: Yumiko is perpetually hostile and distant, though she'll at least participate in some group activities if she isn't expected to get too involved.

* AttackHello: Yumiko generally greets Yuuji early on by trying to slam his finger in the door or attacking him with a knife. She gives up mostly because Yuuji points out that she’s never going to succeed in landing an attack.

* AttentionWhore: Michiru acts like a tsundere so she’ll stand out more.

* Badass: Yuuji is implied from the beginning but it's only shown outright on the routes themselves, some more than others. The [[spoiler: operative number 9029]] is only given to the best of the best in his "company".
* BadLiar: Michiru is an absolutely terrible liar whether attempting to use her ‘skills’ for good (comforting Sachi by claiming she loves melted ice cream) or evil (claiming she has no idea where this cat that is most certainly not named Kittymeow came from) though most people are generally willing to let it slide.

''Grisaia no Kajitsu'' is a visual novel released by frontwing in 2011, the first of a trilogy that was followed by. It was actually a trilogy and was followed by Meikyuu in 2012 and Rakuen in 2013, though neither of these has seen an English release yet.

Growing restless with his unspecified but clearly shady job at the start of the story, Kazami Yuuji requests to be transferred into a normal school. Seeing as he has some emotional issues and a traumatic background, the most that could be accomplished was enrolling him in Mihama Academy, a closed learning environment established to nurture students who find themselves at odds with the world around them. There are only five other students, all of them girls from decently wealthy families who have similarly murky pasts. He quickly integrates himself into the class while the girls begin dropping little hints as to the reason they are in such a specialized and secluded school in the first place.

The story is in large parts a romance, but many routes actually set up further events based on Yuuji's own abused backstory and presumed dead sister. While interacting with the girls, he is liable at any moment to be called away to his special part time 'cleaning' jobs at only a moment's notice. His military regimen also puts him slightly at odds with the girls, making it unclear how well he can truly integrate himself into a normal lifestyle.

----
!!Provides examples of:

* TheAce: Sachi is intelligent, athletic, dutiful, domestic and even a hard worker.
* ACupAngst
* AnAesop
** The story carries an underlying message that whatever helps you get through things is probably okay, even if they seem wrong. Maybe they will be wrong in the long term, but do what you can when you have to. To wit:
*** Michiru [[spoiler:acts the clown since otherwise she feels entirely worthless]]. It’s no longer really healthy for her, but at the time she started doing it, it was absolutely critical.
*** Sachi [[spoiler:obsessively obeys all orders because she perceives herself to be selfish and terrible]] but while this helped [[spoiler:overcome her PTSD temporarily]] it did lead her to [[spoiler:attempt to burn down her school when asked to stop the exams]]. Stated explicitly in this case.
** There’s also a firm message delivered by Yuuji: People don’t save each other. People save themselves. A little help is good, but in the end it’s up to the person with the problem to help themselves truly deal with their issues. Doing it all by yourself is something you could spend your whole life on and still not succeed.
* AllWomenAreLustful: Yuuji is apparently surrounded by rather lusty women. Even his boss flirts with him. Only Michiru seems exempt.
* AloofDarkhairedGirl: Yumiko is perpetually hostile and distant, though she'll at least participate in some group activities if she isn't expected to get too involved.
* AmbiguousSituation: In Amane’s route, [[spoiler:they never get around to checking Kazuki’s hidden stash, nor do they know if she truly escaped or not. So is she alive or not?]]
* ArrangedMarriage: Yumiko’s mother was a smalltime landowner who married an up and coming railroad baron at the wishes of her family.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:After being outwitted and beaten by Yuuji, Michiaki’s world collapses and he tries to understand the suffering he put his wife and daughter through. To his dismay, he simply can’t do it. All his empathy was burned away thanks to his own father.]]
* AttackHello: Yumiko generally greets Yuuji early on by trying to slam his finger in the door or attacking him with a knife. She gives up mostly because Yuuji points out that she’s never going to succeed in landing an attack.
* AttendingYourOwnFuneral: To make a point, Yuuji [[spoiler:fakes Michiru’s death and buries her. She’s quite astonished to hear that people actually do care about her and the letters they left her push her to making a real decision instead of just running away.]] So then she has a choice to make: [[spoiler:Stay dead, or come out of the box?]]
* AttentionWhore: Michiru acts like a tsundere so she’ll stand out more.
* BabiesEverAfter: Several endings end far enough in the future to see Yuuji with a wife and children, generally a daughter.
* BeachEpisode: Right before the route branchings, the cast go to the beach. A miserable time is had by Michiru because the universe hates her.
* BerserkButton: At the beginning of Michiru’s route, when a well meaning Amane keeps pressing Yuuji about how awkward Michiru is acting, she absolutely blows up without intending to and screams at Amane [[spoiler:necessitating the ‘other’ Michiru to save the situation.]]
* BetterAsFriends: In most endings, Yuuji will admit to himself that Amane is more important to him than anyone he’s really interacted with since his master or JB, but he doesn’t want to mix romance into things. He really does see her as something of a big sister figure.
* ABirthdayNotABreak: [[spoiler:Sachi’s parents were run over]] on her birthday and right in front of her. That it was this day of all day really worms its way inside her heart, especially with how she had been acting.
* BrickJoke: At the beginning of a Sachi portion of the story she mentions how the principal asked her to water the flowers if they looked unhealthy. Yuuji says that the next time she makes a request like that she should make an insulting reply and then they continue on with Sachi’s whole ExtremeDoormat shtick. Skip forward about half a dozen scenes and Sachi interrupts Chizuru as prompted and walks off, much to her confusion.
* BrotherSisterIncest: Upon learning how ‘close’ Kazuki was with Yuuji, Amane is pretty squicked. Especially considering the ages of the people in question. Kazuki was apparently under the impression that it wasn’t strange at all.
* BungledSuicide: [[spoiler:In the middle of her unrequited love, abandonment and identity issues, Michiru’s cat dies and she swallows a lot of the pills she pretends are candy. Yuuji walks in on her with foam around her mouth and completely unconscious. Not the first time she’s tried, either.]]
* BuriedAlive: [[spoiler:To make a point about how she should be living in a brutally direct way, Yuuji buries Michiru alive when she request to die. However, he leaves her close enough to the surface to easily escape on her own, makes the lid flimsy, makes sure there’s an air passage and leaves her a phone to call him on.]]
* {{Buttmonkey}}
* CallBack: If you read the flashback in Amane’s route and then reread the scene where he turns her down, you’ll see him say [[spoiler:that there’s no big sister that would try to seriously kiss their little brothers. Except we know Kazuki did exactly that and more and Amane knows that damn well.]]
* CatchPhrase: ‘The scales have fallen from my eyes’ is an expression that is generally viewed as Sachi’s, though she only uses it about half a dozen times throughout the story, most of them early on.
* ComatoseCanary: Averted: [[spoiler:The transplant girl was awake while supposedly in a vegetative state, but despite her best efforts she could not send any signals about it to her parents.]]
* TheComicallySerious
** Not only does Sachi do whatever she’s asked completely seriously, but she also has a surprisingly wicked tongue on her.
** Similarly, Yumiko always acts dignified and aloof, but she’s pretty goofy when given the chance.
* ConversationalTroping: The story goes through a lot of tropes like {{Tsundere}}, [[SugarAndIcePersonality Kuudere]], MookChivalry, TapOnTheHead, ChildhoodFriendRomance and LethalChef. Generally, it seems to do so mainly to point out that they’re silly and inaccurate.
The only to really catch on is Sachi who says pretty bluntly that if you want to keep your internet searches secret you should probably put a password longer than six characters on your computer.
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight
* DamnedByFaintPraise: Not that Sachi and Makina notice, but Yuuji describes Tunafishman as ‘Certainly not boring’ and ‘a truly… thought provoking experience.’
* DatePeepers: Catching on that Amane intends to follow him on his date with Sachi, Yuuji decides to be obnoxious and boring by having their date be physical exercise. Irritated, she comes out of hiding quickly.
* ADateWithRosiePalms
* DeadlyDistantFinale: Amane’s epilogue skips ahead, in the end placing itself fifty years in the future and includes how both of them died.
* DeadpanSnarker: When accosted by police, Yuuji moves between bare basic compliance, absolute silence and heavy sarcasm.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Talked about and ridiculed. Who would become friends with someone that punches them anyway?
* DefrostingIceQueen: Yumiko, naturally. In her route, she defrosts so much that she eventually turns into complete mush. Outside it, she simply mellows out like Makina said she would.
* DiscretionShot: When we see the girls try on makeup, they go from best to worst with Yumiko, Michiru and Makina before the girls see Sachi and declare they would pity her too much if Yuuji saw what she had done to herself.
* EatTheDog: [[spoiler:During the bus crash, one of the girls brought along a small dog. Eventually it died and Kazuki suggested eating it. Her rather direct methods freak everyone out even as they know they wanted to suggest the same. Even Komori, the owner, joined in at the end. However, doing so broke her and she committed suicide a few days later.]]
* EntendreFailure: Sachi, hip ointment
* EmotionlessGirl: Sachi’s mood never varies from a low level polite friendliness. No anger, no joy, no sadness, no stress. It starts to worry Yuuji.
* EpicFail: Played for drama in Yumiko’s route. [[spoiler:After she and Yuuji flee into hiding, she begins feeling like a useless burden despite Yuuji’s reassurances and tries to learn some housework while she’s out. She burns the stew, spills tea on the table and laundry after it gets rained on, breaks half their dishware and generally trashes the place. When Yuuji gets home, he instantly assumes that there was an attack by her father’s men, which doesn’t help her depression at all.]]
* EpilogueLetter: Michiru’s ending has her [[spoiler:and her new friend]] writing a letter. The contents aren’t really that important so much as the story establishing how everyone involved is getting along with the new arrangements.
* ExactWords: Sachi will do exactly what you ask of her and no more, so be careful what you say.
* EvilStoleMyFaith: Yuuji calmly and clearly states his own atheism, but unlike much of what he says it appears to be nothing more than an opinion and not necessarily true. It’s simply a conclusion he reached based on his own harsh experiences. [[spoiler:The heart donor girl pretty flatly calls him out on acting so confident about it when he has no experience in the matter. She is, after all, sort of proof that it’s not as simple as he thinks if nothing else.]]
* EyeScream: To disable a crazed man with a gun, [[spoiler:Yuuji thrusts his fingers into his right eye socket and grabbing his eye without crushing it.]]
* FacePalm: When Makina asks if Yuuji will be her new papa, he begins massaging his eyebrows.
* FakingTheDead: [[spoiler:In order to make a point to Michiru, Yuuji paralyzes Michiru with a drug and forces her to confront the reality of her life.]]
* FamilyUnfriendlyAesop: InUniverse, people sometimes learn some pretty twisted lessons.
** Adult women have been teaching these to Yuuji throughout the years. Two shining examples are that you should lie to women when the truth is tricky or that it’s not so bad to a replaceable cog in the machine.
--> Women aren’t really eager to learn the ugly truth. Even if they know you’re lying, they’ll choose to accept the deception as long as they have a reason to do so.
** Not too long before the story began, Michiru decided that she had learned the lesson that [[spoiler:if the real you sucks, fake a new personality. Better that way, right?]] The story seems to agree to an extent as well.
* FanDisservice: During the flashback in Amane’s route, [[spoiler:she and Kazuki witness the captain having sex with the teacher. With human limbs beneath them that they were going to feed to the other girls.]]
* FashionableAsymmetry: Makina’s socks never match.
* FirstNameBasis
** Yuuji starts using Yumiko’s first name as a contrast to her HeyYou attitude so that she’s forced to compromise and have both use last names.
** Yuuji also always refers to the principal by her first name. So, no, he does not treat her with a great deal of open respect.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Amane mentions in passing that she has trouble keeping weight off because her body adapted to starvation conditions and keeps trying to pack on additional fat. Obviously, this leads somewhere unpleasant.
* ForgottenChildhoodFriend: [[spoiler:Sachi was Yuuji’s only friend before his life turned to complete shit. She remembers, he doesn’t.]]
* GirlishPigtails: Michiru attempts to cultivate a tsundere image and first bleaches her hair and then puts it in twintails to complete it.
* GiverOfLameNames
* GratuitousEnglish: Makina and Michiru often slip into gratuitous English statements marked with < > brackets so you can tell without listening to her actual speech. Makina lived abroad a little when she was younger and Michiru is just sort of spacey. They’re both clearly terrible at it, though.
--> Yuuji: Tell me something. Why do you keep ending your sentences with little bursts of awkward English?
* HarmfulToMinors: [[spoiler:Both of Sachi’s parents were run over by a car right in front of her. What’s worse is that they had spent the whole day looking for her after she spurned their attempt to spend the day with her after a long period of really busy work.]]
* HeadPet: Thanks to Yuuji’s influence, Kittymeow decides that Michiru’s head makes for a good perch. After awhile, she doesn’t always notice his presence.
* TheHeart: Surprisingly, Michiru acts in many ways as the emotional center of the group. She helps keep everyone in balance. Without her around, Makina and Sakaki begin to clash, Sachi gets exhausted and Amane begins to notice the little mistakes Sachi does make.
* HeirClubForMen: [[spoiler:Everyone in Yumiko’s family hated her for not being a boy.]]
* HeyYou: Yumiko addresses Yuuji this way at first, so he responds by using her first name and forcing her to come to a compromise with both using last names.
* HopeSpot: [[spoiler:Every time things seemed to be getting better in Yumiko’s backstory, someone cruel would ruin things. Starting to get along with her mother while her health improves? Her father has a son and begins making preparations to divorce her mother. Takes her back in and acts calm and fatherly? The son died and he suddenly has no heir. Just more manipulation. Try to talk to her new friend about it? Overhear her talking behind her back and laughing at her.]]
* ICantBelieveAGuyLikeYouWouldNoticeMe: Amane’s devotion to Yuuji actually makes him a little uncomfortable. She’s beautiful, kind, domestic and easy to get along with while he views himself in an unspecified but rather negative way. [[spoiler:In a way, he’s not wrong: Amane admits that she needs him more than she loves him at the start. Quite possibly it was his instincts clueing him in given his lack of similar sentiments for Sachi.]]
* IdiotHair: Yuuji manages to convince Michiru that her idiot hair, which he calls Charlie[[note]]Her twintails are Alpha and Bravo[[/note]], is cat repellant. She gains a HeadPet for her trouble when she believes him.
* IHaveBoobsYouMustObey: Attempted, but Yuuji couldn’t care less about Amane’s boobs.
* IllGirl: Whenever she gets stressed out, Michiru appears to have chest pains, but then she’s back to normal again. [[spoiler:She had a chronic heart disease, but she got a transplant. So she’s healthy now, but it’s still a sign her personality is going to chamge.]]
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: Sachi wears a maid outfit because the other girls jokingly suggested she should. Building on that, after Yuuji makes a comment in passing about underwear, she comes to school wearing nothing else and seems slightly confused that the other girls take issue with it.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Sometimes Yuuji [[TheGadfly picks on people for fun]] but a surprising amount of the time he just has no idea how to behave with even a modicum of politeness or tact.
* InsufferableGenius: In the only real flashback scene we have of Yuuji’s sister, she was undeniably a genius and undeniably abrasive and disinterested. Her attitude was less ‘I am awesome’ and more ‘You all suck’ which really irritated [[spoiler:Amane Suou]], who interacted with her the most during said flashback.
* InsultBackfire: Sachi has an odd way of taking sarcastic comments as genuine compliments
** When Yuuji sarcastically compares her devotion to wearing maid outfits to a nun in a bar wearing a bunny girl outfit, she’s genuinely pleased.
** When he calls her a shark fanatic, she’s outright thrilled.
* IsItSomethingYouEat: What is a wokaybokay? Sachi seems to feel that it would taste good and smell like curry.
* ItsAllMyFault
* {{Jerkass}}: Yumiko’s father is a domineering, corrupt businessman [[spoiler:who tries to manipulate his daughter with fake kidnapping attempts followed by real ones when Yuuji defends Yumiko properly. Her mother’s family is little better.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Michiru likes to act pompous and bratty, but she secretly acts as TheHeart of the group and helps out Sachi on a lot of her requests to help her actually be able to manage all the things she’s asked to do.
* KansaiRegionalDialect: Amane normally speaks standard Japanese, but sometimes relaxes a little and speaks with an accent.
* {{Kawaiiko}}: Makina has a very cutesy way of speaking.
* {{Keigo}}: One of the ways that Yuuji drastically stands out against his peers is his use of extremely formal, awkward speech. No slang, no casual speech, all keigo all the time.
* KidsAreCruel: Several backstories are filled with at most two decent child aged characters: Namely, the girl narrating it and another girl who was their friend.
* LapPillow: One of the first things Yuuji is able to make Sachi get interested in is a lap pillow after they walk past some young lovers doing the same.
* LastNameBasis: Yumiko Sakaki is the only person Yuuji really speaks to on a last name basis and getting less formal requires two rather emotional moments.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall
--> Amane: But by now, I’m pretty much typecast as the [[LovableSexManiac big-tits slut character]], you know? Can’t go abandoning my niche this late in the game.
* LethalChef: There isn’t really one in particular, though Yumiko does have on splendid failure to her name during her route. However, Amane does share her thoughts on the matter: Anyone can cook if they avoid the temptation to improvise and just follow the recipe properly. If someone fails at cooking something, they probably tried getting clever or inventive.
* LimitedWardrobe: There’s clothing for school uniforms and generally one set of casual clothing. In a girl’s route, you might see something like Michiru dressing up a little or Sachi wearing normal clothing, but that’s it.
* LiteralMinded: Sachi has a way of reading everything in a very direct way. Considering she also has an unrelated issue with following every order she’s told to follow, she can end up doing some pretty strange things that no one intended. She refuses to call Michiru anything but her name with a -sama on it much to her horror since she hadn’t been serious when she made the request but phrased it too strongly.
* LovableSexManiac: Amane is aware that the impression she gives off is the ‘horny big sister’ type, which isn’t helped by breaking into Yuuji’s room early in the morning, not finding him and then starting to sniff his clothes and sheet because the ‘manstink’ smells good. Goes downhill from there. [[NeverLiveItDown Especially her reputation, which never really recovers.]]
* LoveAtFirstSight: Amane claims to have fallen for Yuuji at first sight because she thinks he looks hopeless. [[spoiler:Not really true. Mild attraction at first sight at best that eventually developed into something more genuine.]]
* {{Meido}}: Sachi wears a maid outfit around all the time because first someone said it would look good on her and then declared that it did indeed look good. It might be rubbing off on her since she acts like a maid as well.
* MementoMacguffin: At the end of Amane’s route, her granddaughter shows her the present that Yuuji gave her. Yuuji originally got it from Amane, who laughs inwardly when she sees it considering that [[spoiler:she put her pubic hair inside it.]]
* TheMerch: While watching a show called Tunafishman, they try selling a transformation belt item during the commercial. Except Tunafishman doesn’t transform and he’s incapable of wearing a belt since he’s a fish on legs. Yuuji is oddly susceptible to these ploys.
* MercyKill: Considered, but averted. [[spoiler:The heart donor girl’s father considered turning off her life support, but couldn’t bring himself to do it.]]
* MistakenForGay: Thanks to Yuuji’s perfectly straightforward explanation, Sakaki comes to the conclusion that Makina and Michiru [[ItMakesSenseInContext are engaging in bondage play.]] Didn’t even really have to be particularly misleading.
* {{Moe}}: InUniverse. Yuuji suspects that Makina acts cutesy, dumb and weak in order to inspire protective feelings in people.
* MookChivalry: Lampshaded since to someone like Yuuji it makes no sense. [[spoiler:Three martial artists and five regular guys try to kidnap Yumiko on her father’s orders, but since it’s just to intimidate her the martial artists came one at a time.]] It makes him suspicious.
* {{Naytheist}}: Yuuji is pretty disinterested when it comes to religion, but he does state that he finds the idea of intelligent design plausible. Only some deity with a nasty sense of humor could explain his master.
* NeverFoundTheBody: Or rather ‘found the body, but not all of it.’ Namely, [[spoiler:Kazuki’s head was never discovered and she had a little trick to make it seems like there was one more of something than there appeared. Unfortunately, due to a random interruption Amane and Yuuji never bother to investigate.]]
* NiceGirl: Amane is the friendly, social and responsible member of the group. She likes to think of herself as the big sister of the group, but in truth acts something like the TeamMom. Yuuji actually finds her a little TOO convenient in that respect.
* NoDeadBodyPoops: When [[spoiler:the newly rechristened Kittymeow gets hit by a car]] the heat and prior injuries sustained cause bowel failure quickly after death, just to make it that much uglier of a scene.
* NoNameGiven: The girl that [[spoiler:supplied Michiru’s new heart]] is never given a name. When asked early on, she quite clearly refuses to answer since [[spoiler:she feels that she’s not really supposed to be here at all.]]
* NonAnswer: When Amane asked [[spoiler:Kazami Kazuki]] if she was scared, her answer was basically ‘I sorta figured this might happen ahead of time.’ No yes or no is forthcoming.
* NonSequiturCausality
** Yumiko’s route only gets going because her father decides to force her to be his heir. Notably, Yumiko doesn’t have any actual route flags but is rather the default.
** In Michiru’s route, everyone suddenly moves out for the summer, giving her and Yuuji two weeks alone to have a fake relationship. Similarly, she only really adopts Kittymeow in this route.
* NoPartyLikeADonnerParty: [[spoiler:During the bus crash, after two weeks of starving, the captain and Mr. Ochi were forced to start feeding the other girls one of the dead girls to help them recover. Kazuki knew and refused. Amane didn’t know but passed because Kazuki wouldn’t eat it. Everyone else knew and complied willingly. In a nod to realism, this got them all killed due to intestinal diseases based on their weakened immune systems.]]
* NoSenseOfHumor: Komine cannot tell when someone is making fun of her or telling a joke.
* NoSocialSkills: Yuuji just isn’t much for tact.
--> “Hey Yumiko… [[spoiler:you touched my dick last night, didn’t you?]]
* NotADate: In Michiru’s route, Yuuji slightly relents on his tough love strategy and allows Michiru to come on an afternoon run with him and very clearly doesn’t think of it as a date. Despite knowing his exercise routine and that he surely means it, she gets all dressed up, arrives three hours early and has a cat on her head.
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: When walking in on a half naked Amane, Yuuji’s reaction is no reaction at all. He asks if someone ordered him a stripper and then gets a glass of water. It’s hot out, you know?
* ObliviousToLove: Yuuji is very perceptive except when it comes to love. When Amane gives him a direct confession early on after a long period of flirty behavior, he’s actually really uneasy and feels like it’s something that is inappropriate for him.
* TheOjou: She tries to deemphasize it, but Yumiko is quite the sheltered rich girl. She’s prone to flattery, easily startled and has opinions she knows make her a total stereotype like finding the ocean unsanitary. The others also all come from decently wealthy families, but none are nearly as sheltered as her barring ‘’maybe’’ Michiru.
* OlderThanTheyLook
** The principal is about thirty, but looks and frequently acts about as mature as Michiru. Yuuji makes a quip about it once and Chizuru, conditioned to snap back at teasing, takes the bait. Yuuji more or less rolls his eyes and says most women would be pleased to still look that young at her age.
** Makina is a first year but looks about ten. In the epilogue for Amane’s route we see her almost ten years in the future and she finally looks about fifteen.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When Michiru finally responds to normal prodding with something other than more silliness, Akane is shocked. [[spoiler:Probably because Michiru was nearly screaming at her over what wasn’t even really teasing but simply normal curiosity.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Yuuji being serious in front of JB instead of snarking at or insulting her tends to throw her off.
* ParentalMarriageVeto: Attempted by Amane’s dad. Yuuji beat him up and considered himself the winner of Amane’s hand in marriage.
* ParentalNeglect
** Yumiko is estranged from her father because [[spoiler:he never really even acknowledged her existence as a child. Building on that, her mother was completely indifferent to her, her grandparents treat her with irritation and it just continued on for years.]]
** Michiru’s family was much more supportive and caring, [[spoiler:but when anxiety and heart disease made her both extremely depressed and look like a failure, the relationship started to grow distant.]]
* ParentsAsPeople: Unlike most of the rest of the cast, Sachi’s backstory is not filled with terrible people. Indeed, Sachi has perhaps the best parents in the story, but as they grew more successful they had less time for her. They still tried, but they were exhausted. They even thought they were doing it for her since they didn’t really get her lack of material desires.
* PhotographicMemory: When Makina sees something, she stores a perfect copy of it in her brain and can recall it from memory at any time, though her memory can get a little scrambled with time or on the details of ordering. She also skips recording things in color.
* PosthumousCharacter: Yuuji occasionally mentions his older sister and master, but both have been dead for some time. [[spoiler:Or at least, his master has. He has some suspicions regarding Kazuki, though no real concrete belief that she lived.]]
* PostKissCatatonia: When Michiru refuses to admit she doesn’t know what ‘first base’ is, she asks Yuuji to show her and refuses to listen when he attempts to explain she shouldn’t ask him that. So he goes and kisses her, reducing her vocabulary to ‘y-yeah’ and causing a zombie state where she repeatedly walks into a bucket. It lasts until she tries eating her entire stock of ramune candies at once and throws up.
* PostVictoryCollapse: When Amane finally gets Yuuji to accept her, she seems calm and in control at first, but then she falls down as all the strength leaves her body.
* PuppyLove: [[spoiler:Komine Sachi]] had a pretty serious crush on Yuuji when he was a kid. It might have gone somewhere, except Yuuji’s life sort of went downhill before much longer.
* RaceForYourLove: [[spoiler:After Yumiko’s father successfully grabs her, Yuuji pursues the kidnappers first on a bicycle through mountain roads and then ‘borrows’ a man’s ridiculously fast and expensive car to beat a helicopter to the airport.]]
* RapunzelHair: Amane’s hair is so long and thick that it probably weighs more than Makina. Or should, anyway.
* RealityEnsues: Some emotional and mental traumas will never go away. Ever. You can learn to deal with them better, but they’re not going to just magically vanish, nor will the consequences they’ve placed upon your life.
* ReplacementGoldfish
** Makina’s father died some time ago and after awhile she wonders if she can make Yuuji into her new papa.
** Inverted with Amane. [[spoiler:She wants to be a replacement goldfish for Kazuki to Yuuji, which is why she asks to be his big sister.]]
* RescueRomance: [[spoiler:Yumiko’s feelings go from implied crush to utter faith in Yuuji when her father starts attempting to kidnap her.]]
* SchoolgirlLesbians: During [[spoiler:the bus crash]] there were a number of somewhat suspect girl pairs, which gave Amane the idea of teasing [[spoiler:Kazami Kazuki]] by flirting with her.
* SelectiveObliviousness: Amane doesn’t want to find out what Yuuji does for a living. So she doesn’t.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Amane goes around dressed skimpily since she appreciates the reactions. When she starts getting changed in Yuuji’s room and he walks in, she refuses to get embarrassed until she realizes that he doesn’t mind, at which point she finally tells him to leave.
* SharingABody: [[spoiler:For the resolution of Michiru’s route, the arrangement is that Michiru and the American heart donor girl will share their body.]]
* ShrinkingViolet: Makina hates crowded places and meeting new people, so she’s quite shy around Yuuji.
* ShutUpKiss: Yuuji muses that this is the one way to quiet a noisy woman, but sadly it carries its own set of consequences.
* SickeninglySweetHearts: Amane and Yuuji get a reputation for this largely because Yuuji figures he might as well just go along with whatever Amane is saying.
* SingleIssuePsychology
* SmarterThanYouLook
** Despite her own assumptions, Makina is not stupid. She actually has a photographic memory and it’s hinted she could potentially be an outright genius. However, genius might not really be worth anything, so why bother?
** Michiru, on the other hand, really doesn’t seem to be that smart. [[spoiler:However, she’s explicitly acting stupider than she really is and some of her poor performance appears to be a result of anxiety rather than lack of knowledge.]]
* SoleSurvivor: [[spoiler:Amane is the sole survivor of the bus crash that claimed Yuuji’s sister and their club.]]
* SplitPersonality: [[spoiler:When Michiru gets too stressed out, a different personality comes out and resolves whatever was freaking her out and then disappears again. She knows what is going on, but doesn’t really want to face it. People even began to accept her other personality as the real Michiru. However, it’s not DID but rather the girl she got her heart transplant from.]]
* SpotTheImpostor: In the common route, Yuuji has to go find [[spoiler:Michiru after she nearly collapses]]. Upon seemingly finding her, he doesn’t recognize her at all and says as much. [[spoiler:Not!Michiru]] admits as much and is surprised to see anyone managed to call her out on it. It’s probably especially surprising since it was done purely through body language.
* StalkerWithoutACrush: When Yuuji gets bored, he sometimes starts following around his classmates for no real reason. They don’t notice unless he wants them to. He IS a professional, after all.
* StatuesqueStunner: Amane is nearly as tall as Yuuji and held to be quite attractive except perhaps to him since he has issues with tall women.
* StepfordSmiler
** [[spoiler:Michiru acts like a goofball so that she can feel less useless and more popular. She actually has a really depressed natural state and has been on the verge of or outright attempted suicide at least twice.]]
** [[spoiler:Amane can tell Yuuji fakes his smile because she simply happens to be much better than he is at faking them.]]
* SugarAndIcePersonality
** According to Makina, Yumiko is your standard by the book kuudere. Once she stops with the knife attacks, perhaps she has a point there. The full dere mode is something to behold. She tends to defrost pretty well by the point any route begins. In Michiru’s route she even seems pretty hurt when Michiru starts acting distant instead of her when she’s trying to be nice.
** Kazuki tended towards InsufferableGenius, but was quite supportive of the people she did care about.
** Finally, Yuuji himself is called a tsundere a few times, but really fits here better. He acts cool and sarcastic all the time, but when he gets involved with someone he tends to devote himself strongly to helping them out, no matter how much he claims it was all their own work that they improved.
* TapOnTheHead: Makina attempts to knock out Michiru with some well-placed karate chops, but it just hurts. Yuuji the martial artist/assassin/whatever kindly informs her that [[AvertedTrope not only does this not work, but you can cause severe irreparable damage like this.]]
* TheTease
** Amane flirts with Yuuji a lot, though she seems to be pretty serious. The real tease here is Yuuji, though, who has active disinterest but still teases her back. She can dish it out, but she can’t take it. [[spoiler:Worked better on Kazuki, though, who was briefly terrified at the idea she had a lesbian admirer.]]
** Unlike Amane, Yuuji has no idea how to read Sachi’s flirting since it’s all deadpan and offhanded.
* TechnicallyASmile: For the most part, Yuuji can only fake smiles. Upon seeing his attempt at a smile, Amane immediately resolves to get a genuine one out of him at some point. He does laugh once, but he’s so unused to it that he actually starts coughing.
* ThereAreNoTherapists: Some of the girls have issues that would be genuinely difficult to tackle in therapy, but no attempt seems to have ever been made. Sachi in particular has a pretty clear and obvious diagnosis, but when she stopped acting up in an obvious manner everyone just went ‘Well, looks cured enough to me!’
* ThreesomeSubtext: In a bizarre sense. [[spoiler:For Michiru’s ending, she’s sharing a body with the America heart donor girl and they’re basically both always in control. So what exactly does this say about their relationship? According to her ‘Your boyfriend is my boyfriend too!’]]
* TokenMiniMoe: Makina
* TooMuchInformation: When Amane launches into a spiel about oral sex in front of Yumiko, the latter’s eyes start glazing over while she makes it quite clear she wants Amane to just stop talking about it already.
* TranslationConvention: The girl that [[spoiler:Michiru got her heart from]] was an American, not Japanese, but all the conversations she overheard were Japanese. She says that there would be no point to [[spoiler:talking to her parents again]] because of this fundamental difference between her circumstances then and now. [[spoiler:Yuuji ignores her complaints and takes her to see them again anyway.]]
* {{Tsundere}}
** Michiru is seen at the start of the story giving herself tsundere practice. She keeps fumbling at it and being decently polite and friendly. She gets called out on it in short order and no one takes it seriously. However, when she’s not playacting at tsundere, she does seem to be a iittle tsuntsun towards Yuuji and tends to get a little jealous when he starts dating someone else.
** According to Makina, Yuuji himself is tsundere. He generally just considers himself as having a soft spot for kids and it would perhaps be more accurate to call say he has a SugarAndIcePersonality. Except when it comes to JB. Definite tsundere when it comes to her.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: When he was little, Yuuji was a little introverted but very nice and friendly to anyone that would talk to him. Now, he’s sarcastic, secretly gloomy and has a terrible self-image.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids: InUniverse, Yuuji is appalled during the cheesy kids show he’s watching with Makina and Sachi. The hero and villain are themed around beef and fish respectively and fight by tearing their flesh off and attacking each other with it.
* WhatIsThisFeeling: When Sachi begins to develop an attraction to Yuuji, she doesn’t really get why she’s acting differently around him. [[spoiler:Nor any of the other complex emotions she’s locked away.]]
* WillNotTellALie: Yuuji dislikes telling lies. He thinks that once you’ve told a lie you’re probably going to get caught eventually.
* YankTheDogsChain: When Michiru finally manages to beat the others at something (namely, scoring points off how ‘close’ you can get to Yumiko) it’s by complete fluke. Then she brags about it, except Yumiko is standing right behind her and apparently believes her when she says it was intentional. Woops.
