* DivergentCharacterEvolution: While Billy Lee uses the classic ''Double Dragon'' moveset from the original games (primarily ''Double Dragon II''), Jimmy Lee uses a new unique moveset that's not quite a {{Shotoclone}} moveset but is pretty damn close.

* TurnsRed: In an unusual fashion. Whichever gang you choose to take on last, its boss gets some sort of notable buff to their moveset and/or has the circumstances of their fight turn to their advantage.

* SpiritualSuccessor: To Secret Base's previous title, ''VideoGame/DevilsDare''. A lot of similar gameplay mechanics made its way into ''Double Dragon Gaiden''.

* AngryGuardDog: Saving Duke as the last opponent will have him be accompanied by two large robotic hounds (which are unique to him).

* WolfPackBoss: At the end of the game you fight [[spoiler: all 4 gang leaders at once]] just before confronting the FinalBoss. The one concession you get is that [[spoiler:they all have roughly the health they would've had if you fought them as your first boss]], because between this battle and the FinalBoss, ''there is a REASON it's immediately preceded by waves of enemies tailor-made for Crowd Control food drops''.

* TagTeam: The player can switch between any of the four heroes at any time, swapping in during the middle of a fight.

* AngryGuardDog: Saving Duke as the last opponent will have him be accompanied by two robotic hounds (which are unique to him).

* WolfPackBoss: At the end of the game you fight [[spoiler: all 4 gang leaders at once]] just before confronting the FinalBoss. Fortunately, they each have less health than they did as a full boss fight.

* DemotedToDragon: This happens to Machine Gun Willy, just like in some previous games. Here, he's just one of 4 gang leaders ruling over New York rather than the sole BigBad, [[spoiler:and after being defeated gets recruited as CoDragons with the other gang leaders for the Mysterious Warrior]].

* AdaptationalJobChange: Willy leads a gang of bikers in the main games. Here, he is instead leading a gang of ex-military servicemen.

* HiredGuns: Linda, Chin, Abobo, and Burnov aren't affiliated with any of the gangs, but, rather, are mercenaries hired by the active gang leaders, due to the heroes taking out the early gangs, and show up whenever the gang alert level rises as the game goes on.

* WesternSamurai: Lady Okada is a Westerner who was married to the previous Okada Oyabun and became one herself after his death. She fights with a katana and wears a very Yakuza-inspired outfit. If you fight her after defeating the other gang leaders first, she'll wear a full suit of samurai armor instead.

* GunsForHire: Linda, Chin, Abobo, and Burnov aren't affiliated with any of the gangs, but rather are mercenaries that get hired on by the remaining gangs as the gang alert level rises as the game goes on due to the heroes taking out the early gangs.
