** Akagi and Yorktown also exist in the games files. Akagi was replaced with Hiryu because she was the template for later IJN carrier designs as well as the Akagi's secondaries making her mechanically somewhat unusual. Yorktown was edged out by Lexington because the latter had superior Anti Air and secondaries.

** IJN Tone was tested for a while with the intention of making it a premium tier 7 cruiser. However complaints that it would not receive any special aircraft related abilities (its an aviation cruiser) and a lack of interest otherwise shelved development.

** The Mikasa, a Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) era IJN Battleship, as a Tier II premiumnoticing a trend here? given out as an event reward ship to players who completed the in-game mission. She has a very slow speed. She only has a 2x2 305mm Main Battery configurationone bow, one aft, two barrels each, have limited firing arcsthe turrets sit close to the superstructure, meaning that it's hard to sail at an angle and fire both turrets, often limited to one turret without sailing completely broadside on to an enemy ship. Combine this the same average 30 second reloads as most battleships which further reduces rate of fire, with slow shell velocities, extremely high firing arcs, a huge shell dispersion size which greatly increases the chance of a miss at range, and poor AP performance, in a tier range where most such AP shells that hit are likely to overpen. Its to the point that most Captains basically pretend that AP doesn't exist on the ship, using HE shells only and hope for a hit. So, why would anyone want to use this ship at all? It has almost as much HP as an upgraded BB South Carolina at Tier III, her main battery HE shells have an alpha of 5100 damage with a 28% chance of causing a fire, which is only 2600 less than a successful Citadel hit with the AP shells, which is deadly at low tiers. She has extremely tight turning circle for a BB, and her armor reaches NoSell levels of thickness. But the best part about the Mikasa, is her 32 secondary guns. Any enemy that sails into their range will face a storm of shells that will rapidly deplete their HP until either they or Mikasa are sunk, or they get out of range. Combined with Mikasa's historical value, generally well liked appearance, and sheer ridiculous fun that Mikasa vs Mikasa battles are, makes Mikasa a very popular ship in game.

** The Phoenix as a whole is considered this by some compared to the Omaha that follows it (or for that matter, to the St. Louis that precedes it). It's armor might as well be made of balsa wood, the guns are placed in odd locations, and the AntiAir is pathetic until you've reached the third hull. However, those chasing down a Phoenix better be ready to turn sharply... for the Phoenix carries torpedoes.

** The early Myogi counts as well. You can expect enemy planes to swarm you like angry mosquitoes as the first hull lacks any AntiAir. The second hull does add a couple small guns that can hit aircraft, but you will never be counting on them. The final hull however might as well be a modern Aegis Cruiser by comparison, as those pop guns get backed up by machine guns, more cannons, and even Duel-Purpose Artillery. Against a Langleys airwing, you can expect to come out on top if you're paying attention.

*** CL= "Cruiser, Light"When someone decides they rather be somewhat more correct to note a cruiser, when it isn't an Armored/Heavy Cruiser. Rare, but still occurs.
*** CC= BattlecruiserAn even more rare use in game, used in the similar way as CL. In real life, the CC designation would only ever have been applied to the Lexington-class battlecruisers, but those were converted to aircraft carriers, hence the rarity of its use. Some Japanese "battleships" in the game were actually battlecruisers (at least initially; the Kongo class in the game are after their extensive refit into full-fledged battleships), but it's rare that they're called that. Likewise, a full "battleship" tech trees for the Soviet Navy will certainly require some tiers to be filled by battlecruisers. The Royal Navy had more than enough battlecruisers to create a complete tech tree of them separate from battleships, and there's much clamoring from players to do exactly that. The same could in fact be done for the Kaiserliche Marine/Kriegsmarine, albeit with significantly more reliance on paper ships.
*** CB= Large CruiserA type of of cruiser killer, developed from battlecruisers. Only the Soviet Moskva fits the bill due to the lack of the Alaska class, the Japanese B-65 concept and the German pocket battleships.

** However, this also likely stems from the fact that the ships names aren't Romanized properly in World of Warships the first place. Using the Kongo example: The way kanji of her name (金剛, "indestructible", named for Mount Kongō) should be Romanized would either be Kongō or Kongou.

It's armor might as well be made of bulsawood, the guns are placed in odd locations, and the AntiAir is pathetic until you've reached the third hull. However, those chasing down a Phoenix better be ready to turn sharply... for the Phoenix carries torpedoes.
** The Izumo as well. While many players grinding through her claim she's the worst ship in game, she still has a sizable devoted fan base. She has a very fast turret traverse for a battleship and mounts the second largest caliber guns in the game. An experienced and lucky player can vaporize all the enemy team's cruisers in minutes with her.
** The Smith, a Tier II premium American destroyer that was sold as part of Wargaming's anniversary specials, potentially counts as a Lethal Joke Ship. It's by far the slowest destroyer in the entire game with a top speed of 28 knots slower than most non-American battleships past Tier V, low-damage short-range torpedoes mounted in single-tube launchers, and her 76mm popguns are second smallest caliber main guns in the game. However, the reload times on the torpedoes (11 seconds!) more than compensate for the poor single-hit damage and the quick rate of fire allows a skilled captain to easily adapt to a target's evasive tactics.
** The Tier II premium Japanese destroyer Tachibana is very similar in all respects to the Smith. It has the same strengths (fast-firing guns, shockingly fast torpedo reload) and similar weaknesses (pathetically weak guns, low speed for a destroyer and a small number of short-range, low-damage torpedoes), though generally to a lesser extent. It has a more conventional torpedo layout of 2 centerline twin-tube launchers that can both fire to either side, a top speed of 30 knots and only half the torpedo reload speed of the Smith...but that's still a lightning-fast 22 seconds. And while its 76mm guns have a lower rate of fire than the Smith, they do slightly more HE damage, with 50% higher chance of starting fires and slightly better turret rotation time.

Likewise, full "battleship" tech trees for the Soviet Navy, Kaiserliche Marine/Kriegsmarine and Royal Navy will certainly require some tiers to be filled by battlecruisers..
*** CB= Large CruiserA type of of cruiser killer, developed from battlecruisers. Only the Soviet Moskva fits the bill due to the lack of the Alaska class and German pocket battleships.

battlecruisers.

* FanNickname: In the Russian fandom the game has already acquired two main nicknames: "Шлюпки"Most often is derogatory, because it sounds very similar to "Шлюхи", "Sluts". ("Shlupki", or "Lifeboats")Often with the ironicaly dismissive modifier "those yours"., which it actually shares with VideoGame/KantaiCollection, and "Корюшка" ("Koryuska" or "Smelt"), due to it being developed by a Saint-Petersburg studio, as the city is famous for its seasonal gluts of smelt in Neva river.

** US battleships are often identified by their namesake state's postal abbreviation (e.g. TX for Texas, AR for Arkansas). For obvious reasons, this is most common on the North American server.
** Torpedoes themselves are earning the nickname "Torpedus", a portmanteau of torpedo and the "Diabeetus" meme. Quite possibly due to their debatable nature as Game Breakers and tendency for being spammed.
*** Another common (and offensive) nickname is the "retard filter", as it takes a lot more work to land over one or two torps per salvo on enemies that often change speed and heading to throw off torpedo aim.
*** They are also often called fish, a nickname sailors gave them during the War(s). For this reason be very weary if someone proposes a tournament to catch the most fish.
*** "Human Torpedus", aka ramming.
*** Shimakaze's, and to a lesser extent Kagero's, torpedo spreads earned their own name: torpedo curtains. This is due to the massive quantity and range of torpedoes the ship can launch at once, forming a wall which players usually have to weave through if they wish to stay alive. And to make things worse, these torpedoes have a range of 20 kilometers, while the destroyers have a detection range of just 7.6 and 6.8 kilometers, respectively. As a result, the mere presence of a Shimakaze or Kagero on the enemy team is a cause for dread, because that torpedo curtain might already be in your path but outside of detection range.
** One of the most common insulting nicknames is "baBBy", which usually refers to a stereotype of battleship players that always try to fight from the maximum range of their guns to the point of constantly being against the map boundaries (commonly known as "bluelining") and whine about torpedoes while doing "everything they could" about them. And by that, we mean they either take no action or take action far too late when the torpedo threat was spotted far in advance. In particular, such players never pick up on clues that destroyer is nearby, and never clue in to the idea that torpedoes can be fired from outside a ship's detection range (if a battleship detects a Japanese destroyer on its own, rather than by having a teammate spot it for them, that destroyer has already fired torpedoes at the battleship).
** Because smaller ships tend to use High Explosive on Battleships, they are often on fire, leading to them being called [=BBQs=].
** Destroyers are occasionally called pedophiles. Yet another nickname for torpedoes is just pedos, and some who likes to use "pedos" can technically be called a pedophile.
** Team Killers, or more specifically, the way the game ID's them, are nicknamed "Cancer Awareness" due to the game marking their name, and ship ID in bright pink colors, and the view from their teammates that such players are cancerous to their team and the game.
** Scrub players in chat are almost always described as "Pun Salty", especially on forum posts regarding said players. The term "salty" itself is nothing new. The reason it deserves mention here is the pun value, as well as the fact that the term makes frequent appearances in the forums.
** "WASD Hack" for actually trying to maneuver your ship. Used to generally counter the claim of other players accusing you of hacking when you dodge most of their shots/torpedoes. Also used to make fun of bad players who only sailed in straight lines.

** DD= Destroyers

to:

** DD= DestroyersDestroyersThe second "D" doesn't stand for anything. But the US Navy ship code system doesn't allow for single-letter codes, and a the time of its introduction there were no sub-types of destroyers the way there were for cruisers.

** CV= Carriers.

to:

** CV= Aircraft Carriers. There are several different theories as to how the "CV" came to be chosen, but there's no firm documentation of it. What's known is that it never indicated carriers being a type of cruiser, and that the seemingly most obvious letter codes ("AC" and "CA") were already taken by the time the first aircraft carriers were introduced. And "AC" never would've been an option even if it were available, because "A" as the first letter of a code always means an auxiliary rather than a warship.

** The Izumo as well. While many players grinding through her claim shes the worst ship in game, she still has a sizable devoted fan base. She has a very fast turret traverse for a battleship and mounts the second largest caliber guns in the game. An experienced and lucky player can vaporize all the enemy team's cruisers in minutes with her.

** The Smith, a premium destroyer that was sold as part of Wargaming's anniversary specials, potentially counts as a Lethal Joke Ship. It's by far the slowest destroyer in the entire game with a top speed of 28 knots slower than most non-American battleships past tier 5 , low-damage short-range torpedoes mounted in single-tube launchers, and the second smallest caliber guns in the game. However, the reload times on the torpedoes more than compensate for the poor single-hit damage and the quick rate of fire allows a skilled captain to easily adapt to a target's evasive tactics.
