* TechnologyMarchesOn: Averted. One would think that people in the '90s wouldn't be able to debunk urban legends as well as today due to lack of internet sources. However, the urban legend website Snopes was actually created in 1994 (and very well known at the time of the film), so they actually had the resources. Additionally, modern social media has proven that people aren't any wiser when it comes to urban legends with many taking many them at face value when presented on apps such as Tik Tok.

social media makes a good case for people not being any less naive than they were in the '90s

* TechnologyMarchesOn: In the age of the Internet some people seem to have made debunking urban legends a pass time, so they have a much shorter shelf-life. This makes the characters in the film seem much more naïve.

Trivia tropes cannot be played with.

** Somewhat averted in the era of "fake news" which has proven that the internet hasn't made people of the 21st century any less naive than the people of the 1990s.

* OrphanedReference: The killer wearing a parka is a reference to the film originally taking place in wintertime, but the production team didn't want to deal with snow.

* UnintentionalPeriodPiece:
** While Website/{{Snopes}} existed at the time of the film's release, it's so widely used now that urban legends tend to have a much shorter shelf life, as a single person in a group of friends doing a Google search can stop a legend in its tracks. The classic decades-old legends are believed by approximately nobody nowadays.
*** Of course this also provides an interesting period piece to the counter argument. Within the film our urban legend debunker is the more academic minded professor trying to dispel them from the more naive college students not with an academic mindset. In the age of Snopes, a lot more people share that academic mindset without being in an academic job. While the counter arguments [[OpinionMyopia sometimes get lumped in as]] gullible and fanciful, there are people with more historical mindsets that would say people like this film's professor and the people who run sites like Snopes sometimes put too much faith in there being records (and if they were accurate) to be found in some urban legend cases. While this is not the same thing as believing they are true, but that there's more scrutiny to be done. The arguments in college classrooms of today as such are going to look very different from this film.
** The argument between Natalie and Tosh over the latter's internet use hogging the phone line. Anybody who grew up in the days of dial-up internet can attest to those sorts of arguments having been TruthInTelevision, but with broadband now the default, it dates the film firmly to the '90s.

* NoStuntDouble: Creator/TaraReid performed her own stunts during her chase sequence, including the fall over the staircase landing, during which she was secured by a harness. The stuntman in the scene used a real ax throughout the filming of it.
