** This film was intended to get Creator/DanaCarvey out of the career slump that his failed sketch comedy show, ''Series/TheDanaCarveyShow'', had started six years prior; it was also his first big role following his botched heart surgery and the lawsuit which followed. Instead, it obliterated what little of a career he had left. Since then, he's mainly stuck to standup with the occasional minor role in other poorly-received comedies like ''Film/JackAndJill'' and ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretLifeOfPets''.

* PopCultureUrbanLegends: The "Turtle Club scene was filmed on 9/11" story. For years, there was a story going around that the Turtle Club scene was being filmed as 9/11 happened, and there was a moment of silence with Dana Carvey in full Turtle Man costume. What ''actually'' occurred was the Turtle Club scene was delayed ''because'' of 9/11. Though when filming resumed on September 24th of that year, there was indeed a moment of silence with Carvey in full costume.

* OldShame: When asked by a fan on Website/{{Twitter}} on how they should punish their kid for mispronouncing [[Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration Data]], Creator/BrentSpiner told them to make their kid watch this film.
** In fact, during the endless end credits, you can see Spiner do a pretty clear AsideGlance that screams, "Get me out of here."

Common Knowledge is a YMMV trope

* CommonKnowledge: It is often claimed that the Turtle Club scene was filmed on 9/11. [[https://defector.com/master-of-disguise-turtle-club-911/ It was actually filmed two weeks later]], though the cast did observe a moment of silence for the victims on the day of shooting the scene and Carvey was indeed in turtle costume at the time.

* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: The film not only has a soundtrack that's filled with early 2000s pop songs, but is stuffed with references to many things like ''WesternAnimation/{{Shrek}}'', ''Series/MalcolmInTheMiddle'', the Music/BackstreetBoys, Music/BritneySpears, Music/JessicaSimpson, Creator/TheOlsenTwins, and (in a DeletedScene) ''Film/AllThat''.
** Pistachio has a fetish for women that are [[BigBeautifulWoman stacked in the back]]. This being portrayed as humorous dates the film because pining for women with large bottoms is anything but unpopular these days.

** Creator/DanaCarvey. Meant as his comeback film, the movie instead torpedoed Carvey's film career. His only film roles since then has been a supporting role in 2011's much-maligned ''Film/JackAndJill'' and finally doing a voice role in ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretLifeOfPets'', the latter of which came 14 years after ''The Master Of Disguise''.
** ''MOD'' was also one of two 2002 films, the other being ''Film/StarTrekNemesis'', that put a severe dent in Creator/BrentSpiner's career.

* TheCameo: Creator/BoDerek and Creator/KenanThompson.
* TheCastShowOff: The film's plot is meant to accommodate Dana Carvey's trademarked ability for uncanny impersonations. One of the outtakes also includes a shot of Carvey, in his turtle suit, playing drums, alluding to Carvey's drumming abilities.
* BillingDisplacement: The director himself actually lampshades this on the DVD commentary, regarding Kenan Thompson's billing during the end titles as part of the main cast, despite his appearance being nothing more than a glorified cameo towards the end of the movie (and is joked that his spot during the end titles is just as long as his actual appearance in the movie itself was).

* TearJerker: In a meta-sense. Carvey had been derailed by a disastrous heart surgery botch, and couldn't work for years. (He won $8M in a malpractice suit and gave it to charity). This was his first film back and its failure meant it was his last major one overall.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: An alternate ending had Pistachio taking Bowman down dressed as Captain America. The kids who appear in the scene are still acknowledged in the credits.

This film's nuclear failure with critics drowned his directing career immediately, with the nearest he's ever gotten to the director's chair in the years since being a few second unit director credits on other Happy Madison films.
