** The first draft of the script had the heroes survive the final battle, as Gareth Edwards believed that there was no way the studio would let him kill off all the main characters in a ''Star Wars'' movie. (This is why Creator/FelicityJones was contracted for two movies despite her character dying at the end.) To his great surprise, both Disney and Kathleen Kennedy gave him permission to pull a KillEmAll in the final act, reasoning that there was really no other way to end a direct prequel featuring characters who had never been seen in any of the other movies. More specifically, the original ending would have had Jyn and Cassian managing to escape Scarif on a ship and rendezvous with the ''Tantive IV'' right as Darth Vader's fleet arrives. They only have enough time to transmit the plans to Leia's ship before their ship is destroyed, but an escape pod can be seen leaving the wreckage implying that they both survived.

** Spencer Wilding replaces Creator/HaydenChristensen inside Darth Vader's iconic suit (Creator/JamesEarlJones still voices him however). Probably for the best as Christensen was a bit too short (6'1" compared with 6'6" Creator/DavidProwse) to fit comfortably in the costume, and also justified in the sense that he only donned the suit for ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith'' because Anakin was just shown being fitted with the life-support system, despairing over the death of his wife, and then watching the construction of the Death Star -- not seeing much action, in short. It also goes without saying that Creator/DavidProwse, in his 80s at the time of filming, was too old and in not good enough shape to play the character at this point. Stuntman Daniel Naprous donned the costume for the action sequence Vader appears in.

* SpoiledByTheMerchandise: Averted. When Hot Toys unveiled their Darth Vader figure for the film, it was noticed that the figure did not come with an ignited lightsaber, prompting speculation that Vader's role in the film would only be a mere cameo. ** Creator/AaronPaul, Creator/SamClaflin, and Creator/EdgarRamirez auditioned for the role of Cassian Andor before the casting of Creator/DiegoLuna.
** Creator/JetLi was offered the role of Chirrut Îmwe.
** Creator/AlexandreDesplat was the film's original composer, but was replaced by Creator/MichaelGiacchino after the film was extensively reshot, as Desplat was no longer available to score the new footage.
** John Knoll actually conceived the idea as a TV show back in 2003, when Lucasfilm was looking for ways to continue the franchise after ''Revenge of the Sith''. When the show was canned over budget concerns, Knoll's concept was retooled into the movie.
** Knoll's original pitch had Darth Vader as a mere cameo with no lines, as well as the complete absence of the Force. Gareth Edwards had the explicit Force elements and Jedha added to the film because he felt that a ''Star Wars'' movie without the Force simply didn't feel right, while the studio beefed up Vader's appearance so that they could tease his involvement in the marketing.
*v Lyra Erso was originally going to be a former Jedi who had survived Order 66, but this plot point was dropped, as the creative team thought it'd be better to examine what life in the ''Star Wars'' universe was like for normal people after the fall of the Jedi Order. Elements of the idea can still be seen in the final film, such as the Kyber crystal necklace she gives to Jyn in the opening scene, and the fact that her clothes resembled Jedi attire.
** In Knoll's original story draft of the film, Krennic served as [[TheMole an Imperial spy]] on the Rogue One team, a plot element that was removed entirely when Gary Whitta joined the writing process. Krennic was also going to have a boss he would report to, named Willix Cree. The name "Willix" would later reappear in [[AllThereInTheManual the Rogue One Visual Guide]] as one of Cassian's spy aliases.
** The ''Rogue One'' squad was made up of Jyn, Kaytoo (who originally was a protocol droid), a Rebel pilot named Ria Talla (whose name would be used as a fake identity in ''[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsRebels Rebels]]''), an alien duo named Senna and Lunak (the latter would’ve been reused for the now-cancelled game ''[[VideoGame/{{Ragtag}} Star Wars: Ragtag]]''), and two other rebels named Dray Nevis and Jerris Kastal. Jyn and Kaytoo would be carried over, Ria would presumably become Bodhi, Senna and Lunak were replaced by Baze and Chirrut, and Cassian replaced the other two rebels.
** Prominently shown in the trailers, Jyn, Cassian and Kaytoo were to take part in the ground battle on Scarif after retrieving the Death Star Plans. As originally written and filmed, the transmitter was not in the same building as the archive. Once they retrieved the plans, they had to fight their way across the beaches to the transmitter building to beam them up to the fleet. The bulk of the reshoots actually went into streamlining this sequence so that the transmitter and archive were the same building.
** [[https://youtu.be/l0ca3kHAujM?t=44 0:44 of this video]] shows behind-the-scenes footage of what would've been Kaytoo being shot to death and falling limp besides Cassian's corpse.
** The first draft of the script had the heroes survive the final battle, as Gareth Edwards believed that there was no way the studio would let him kill off all the main characters in a ''Star Wars'' movie. (This is why Creator/FelicityJones was contracted for two movies despite her character dying at the end.) They only have enough time to transmit the plans to Leia's ship before their ship is destroyed, but an escape pod can be seen leaving the wreckage implying that they both survived.
** Gary Whitta had two ideas for the ending of the Battle of Scarif that were both scrapped. The first idea would've had Krennic survive the Death Star blast on the Imperial base despite everyone else dying there... only for Darth Vader to [[YouHaveFailedMe Force-choke him to death]] aboard a Star Destroyer. This was scrapped due to Lucasfilm thinking Krennic surviving the blast would've been improbable. The second ending would've had Vader himself enter Scarif's surface to slaughter the Rebels personally, only to be too late to stop the Death Star plans from being transmitted to the Rebels. This ending was reworked to Vader boarding the ''Profundity'', slaughtering all the Rebels firing at him before the [[SoleSurvivor sole surviving Rebel]] takes the plans to Leia's ship.
** Though ILM and the production crew were confident that Tarkin could be resurrected for the film, back-up plans were made in case they were unable to portray the character. These included relegating Tarkin's lines to other characters and potentially having Tarkin only appear in a hologram.
** Creator/PhilLordAndChrisMiller ''almost'' made a cameo, and were even fitted into [[https://twitter.com/TheSWU/status/754686303053156353/photo/1 costumes on the set for it]]. It would have served as a foreshadowing to them directing the Han Solo film for the ''Star Wars Anthology'' series, which they were ultimately dropped from.

* TechnologyMarchesOn: Much of the film's plot is driven by a model of information technology that was dominant when the first ''[[Film/ANewHope Star Wars]]'' was made in 1977. Plans for the Death Star are stored offline, in a single physical location, in clear text on what resemble large data storage tapes as opposed to being stored in an online cloud storage system protected by encryption, which was the state of the art at the time the ''Film/RogueOne'' was produced. The plethora of single function consoles is another throwback to the age of limited display and computing power. Zig-zagged in that such systems are still in use in some cases in the real world today, for the reason that this film actually illustrates quite effectively--security. It takes Jyn and Cassian a lot of time and effort to retrieve the data from the archive, and they are nearly caught by the Imperials for doing so, demonstrating the efficacy of physical, offline storage as a security practice.

** As soon as it was announced that there would be reshoots on the film, many were worried that Disney would {{Bowdlerise}} the movie [[ExecutiveMeddling to make it more family-friendly]], especially after ''Film/TheForceAwakens''. As more and more footage came in, it was abundantly clear that this would '''not''' be the case, particularly with the warning that the film may be too intense for younger viewers present in some advertisements. Once the film was screened to critics, many of them noted that that the movie was much DarkerAndEdgier than they were expecting.
** Prior to the release of the movie, there were a number of fans that guessed that Jyn Erso would be the mother of Rey from the Sequel Trilogy. This turns out not to be the case, [[spoiler:as Jyn dies at the end of the film, about 15 years in-universe before Rey was born]].

** WordOfGod has also stuck down the idea some fans had that Chirrut Îmwe isn't Force-sensitive. He is sensitive, just not to the same level that a Jedi would be.
** Similar to the Biggs note, many thought Cassian Andor would be Kyle Katarn based on both the physical resemblance, and that Kyle was involved in [[VideoGame/DarkForces one of the many]] earlier versions of the Death Star plans being stolen.

* DeletedScene: The film required extensive reshoots late in its production. About 45 scenes that were featured in trailers or TV spots did not make it to the final film. According to Creator/GarethEdwards, these were simply bits and pieces, not entire scenes removed from the film.
** An opening title crawl.
** Jyn Erso saying "I rebel" to Mon Mothma.
** An overhead shot of Jedi statue ruins on Jedha.
** Captured Rebel pilots on Jedha (altered in a later trailer to remove blood from the face of a soldier).
** Saw Gerrera without hair on Jedha.
** Orson Krennic in the Death Star control room.
** Orson Krennic telling Darth Vader: "The power that we are dealing with here is immeasurable."

In the film, they infiltrate the base disguised as Imperials and never fight on the beaches. [[MissingTrailerScene Trailers do show them running on the beach]], but reshoots happened and the scene was not included in the film.

** Subverted since he mainly thought it was funny, but Diego Luna was a little perturbed spending most of his time with Alan Tudyk with Tudyk's crotch bulge directly in his eyeline.

It also goes without saying that David Prowse, in his 80s at the time of filming, is too old to play the character at this point. Stuntman Daniel Naprous donned the costume for the action sequence Vader appears in.

** While a body double is used--with her face imposed over the double--[[spoiler:Creator/CarrieFisher]] provides the voice for her appearance as [[spoiler:Leia]] taken from archived footage. It along with ''Episode 8'' also doubles as [[spoiler:Carrie Fisher's]] last film roles, as she died just a couple weeks after ''Rogue One'' premiered.
