* ArtistDisillusionment: Baum grew exhausted with the series and ended many of his stories with elaborate explanations as to why it would be impossible for him, as the "historian of Oz" to ever learn anything more about the place, because they had erected some sort of magic forcefield or whatever to prevent contact with the outside world. These books proved his only money-making work as an author, however, so he always came crawling back, retconning away his old excuses.

Transferred initially misplaced YMMV to here.

Added DiffLines:

* FranchiseZombie: Baum had only meant to write one or two ''Oz'' sequels (if any) and then move on to other projects[[note]]He even wrote a definitive ending with the sixth book[[/note]], but the popularity of the books, coupled with his own financial issues and the fact that all of his non-Oz books (apart from ''Father Goose'', which he wrote before the first Oz novel and which was his first success) were flops, forced him to keep writing Oz books for the rest of his life, long after he had lost interest in them. And after he died, publisher Reily & Lee weren't about to let that stop the series, and was continued by different writers until the 1960's. From there, once the books began to fall into the public domain, anyone could write their own Oz book (and just like with any fan fiction, the results have varied widely).

* {{Expy}}: Betsy Bobbin for Dorothy. Betsy was created as a substitute for Dorothy around the time of the stage production of ''The Tik-Tok Man of Oz,'' since the rights to the character of Dorothy had been acquired by the stage production of ''The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.'' While Baum could have used Dorothy in the novelization of the play he decided to stick closer to the play and use Betsy in the book too. Betsy was more or less identical to Dorothy except that she was from Oklahoma instead of Kansas and had a pet mule instead of Billina the Chicken. She even arrives in Oz in the same manner as Dorothy did in ''Ozma of Oz.'' Later, when Baum regained the rights to Dorothy, he retained Betsy as a character, where she gradually became more of an independent entity.

* ScrewedByTheLawyers: Betsy Bobbin's status as Dorothy's {{Expy}} is due to this. She even arrives in Oz in the same manner as Dorothy did in ''Ozma of Oz.'' While she stuck around in the following book, Betsy was never more than a very minor character.
