** Creator/GlennClose was initially attached to reprise her role as Nova Prime, but James Gunn decided against it as he was trying to cram her into the movie rather than have her appear organically.
** James Gunn wanted Music/DavidBowie to have an appearance in Yondu's crew, but the latter's illness and death prevented that from happening. He then planned to again include a Bowie song in the soundtrack (in this case "Suffragette City"), but for unknown reasons it didn't make the final cut.
** Along with Mantis, Gunn initially planned to have ComicBook/AdamWarlock join the team; he cut Warlock because of the already large number of subplots and character arcs, and this didn't make it past the treatment phase. * ScrewedByTheLawyers: Thankfully avoided. Marvel did not realize that they didn't originally have the film rights to Ego until production on the movie was about to begin. Instead, his rights were with Creator/TwentiethCenturyFox, likely because of his ties to the ComicBook/FantasticFour and ComicBook/SilverSurfer franchises (which Fox had the license to until December 2017). Since Gunn did not have any other characters in mind for Star-Lord's father (and the movie would have had to be overhauled on short notice if he couldn't figure out a replacement), he had to ask Fox if he could use the character. Surprisingly, in a trading deal as audacious as Disney's earlier deal to get the rights to WesternAnimation/OswaldTheLuckyRabbit back, Fox actually agreed to this, on the condition that they have more creative freedom regarding Negasonic Teenage Warhead's set of superpowers in ''Film/Deadpool2016''.
