* ExecutiveMeddling: After completing the first ''Meg'' book, Alten began work on a thriller involving the Mayan doomsday prophecy, only for Doubleday's president to require him to turn it into another sea-based adventure, eventually titled ''Fathom'', in order to make him "our new Peter Benchley". Alten and an assigned editor were roughly two-thirds of the way through it when Doubleday was bought out by German publisher and conglomerate Bertlesmann, who'd hated ''Meg'', didn't want another sea-based book and subsequently fired Doubleday's president and cancelled ''Fathom''. Alten subsequently managed to get the rights back and rewrote it as ''Domain''.
