** In the original script, Rose's first experience of seeing the TARDIS interior was shared with the audience. Director Keith Boak, however, wanted her to exit and run around the TARDIS before entering again, at which point the interior would be revealed to the audience. This change was eventually embraced by the executive producers. Davies remarked that he originally wanted to take Rose and the audience inside the TARDIS in all one shot, but this was not a feasible with the budget.[19] This effect would later be accomplished in "[[Recap/DoctorWho2012CSTheSnowmen The Snowmen]]".

** Creator/HughGrant was originally approached for the role of the [[Characters/DoctorWhoNinthDoctor Ninth Doctor]] before Creator/ChristopherEccleston was cast. However, Grant turned it down due to his belief that the revival would not take off. [[OldShame He later expressed his regret at turning down the offer having seen how successful the series turned out.]] Grant previously portrayed a non-canonical version of the Doctor in [[Recap/DoctorWhoTheCurseOfFatalDeath "The Curse of Fatal Death"]].
*** Creator/BillNighy and Creator/AlanCumming were also offered the part of the Ninth Doctor. However, Nighy turned down the offer due to considering the role to be "too much baggage", while Cumming backed out after finding out it would take eight months in Cardiff to film it. Nighy would eventually go on to play Dr. Black in [[Recap/DoctorWhoS31E10VincentAndTheDoctor "Vincent and the Doctor"]], while Cumming would appear as [[UsefulNotes/JamesTheFirst King James VI/I]] in [[Recap/DoctorWhoS37E8TheWitchfinders "The Witchfinders"]].
*** [[Series/JonathanCreek Alan Davies]], Creator/EddieIzzard, Creator/RichardEGrant, and Creator/AnthonyHead were considered for the part of the Ninth Doctor as well before the casting of Eccleston. Grant previously played a non-canonical version of the Ninth Doctor in [[WebAnimation/ScreamOfTheShalka "Scream of the Shalka"]]. Grant and Head would go on to portray Dr. Simeon and Mr. Finch in [[Recap/DoctorWho2012CSTheSnowmen "The Snowmen"]] and [[Recap/DoctorWhoS28E3SchoolReunion "School Reunion"]] respectively.
** Creator/GeorgiaMoffett auditioned for [[Characters/DoctorWhoRoseTyler Rose Tyler]] before the casting of Music/BilliePiper. Moffett would later go on to portray Jenny in [[Recap/DoctorWhoS30E6TheDoctorsDaughter "The Doctor's Daughter"]].
** Creator/PaulMcGann was willing to return as the [[Characters/DoctorWhoEighthDoctor Eighth Doctor]] for the new series. However, Creator/RussellTDavies was adamant on starting the revival fresh with a completely new Doctor. There was then talk of bringing [=McGann=] back at least to shoot a regeneration sequence at the beginning of the episode, but Davies decided it would be too confusing for new viewers, in effect managing to avoid the [[DroppedABridgeOnHim very problem]] that made the opening of [[Recap/DoctorWhoS24E1TimeAndTheRani "Time and the Rani"]] so confusing nearly twenty years prior.

* {{Jossed}}: Creator/StevenMoffat stated in 2013 that he believed that the Ninth Doctor is newly-regenerated here, as evidenced by his reaction to looking in the mirror. Creator/RussellTDavies disagrees:
-->No, I don't think he'd just regenerated. If you have certain physical features like big ears or buck teeth, you look at them and sigh every time you look in the mirror. And I think if you'd had eight different faces, even if you'd been in the current form for a hundred years, you'd still mutter at them. So it was meant as a nod to the fact he'd once had other faces. But I wrote the ''Titanic'' stuff and Krakatoa assuming that the Ninth Doctor had been around for a while. He doesn't act very post-regeneration, does he? He appears in command, waving a bomb. This is a man who knows himself, and has known himself for a while.

* OldShame: Noel Clarke isn't too fond of this episode:
-->It wasn't played straight - some of it was played for laughs. I have no excuses, but I do have reasons: I had no rehearsal time, so I didn't really know the tone of what we were doing. I'd never met Chris before, or Billie or Camille. I didn't realise at the time, but my head wasn't where it should have been.

* SerendipityWritesThePlot: In the scene where the Doctor is in Rose's flat, the original script called for the Doctor to stick his entire head in the cat flap. But when they got it, it was far too small.
