* BTeamSequel: While there was no official [[ContinuityReboot reboot]], the tone shifted notably between the Creator/TimBurton–helmed ''Film/Batman1989'' and ''Film/BatmanReturns'' and the Creator/JoelSchumacher–helmed ''Film/BatmanForever'' and ''Film/BatmanAndRobin''.

* DirectedByCastMember: The Canadian French dub for all four movies was directed by Vincent Davy, who also voiced the Joker in the first movie, the fat clown who gets blown up by dynamite in the second movie, and Two-Face in the third movie.

** Batman/Bruce Wayne was played in ''Film/Batman1989'' and ''Film/BatmanReturns'' by Creator/MichaelKeaton, who then quit the role and was replaced by Creator/ValKilmer for ''Film/BatmanForever'', who ''also'' quit the role and was replaced by Creator/GeorgeClooney for ''Film/BatmanAndRobin''. Keaton later [[TheOriginalDarrin reprised]] his role in ''Film/{{The Flash|2023}}''.
** The character Harvey Dent/Two-Face was played by Creator/BillyDeeWilliams in ''Film/Batman1989'' and Creator/TommyLeeJones in ''Film/BatmanForever''. Williams appeared solely as "Harvey Dent", pre-Two-Face, but took the role with the expectation of returning to play the villain in a sequel and was "disappointed" when that ultimately didn't happen. Williams ''finally'' got to play Two-Face nearly thirty years later in ''WesternAnimation/TheLegoBatmanMovie''.

* ScrewedByTheMerchandise: A famous case. Arguably, UsefulNotes/McDonalds Happy Meal toys were the downfall of this film series. Parents felt that the DarkerAndEdgier second film in the series was inappropriate for children's toys, so the action figures went unsold. UsefulNotes/McDonalds was a strong supporter of the first film, so Creator/WarnerBros insisted on a change in dramatic tone. So creators were changed, Creator/JoelSchumacher replaced Creator/TimBurton and the third film was LighterAndSofter with more colorful characters and vehicles which could be translated into more action figures. This worked, and toys sold. However, there's an argument that the tone shift contributed to the fourth film not doing as well as the previous entries. Many working on ''Film/BatmanForever'' commented that it was the first time they learned of the term "toyetic", which meant toy-friendly design decisions, such as the batmobile having only a single seat because that was easier to replicate as a toy. Decades later, ''Film/{{Joker|2019}}'' almost didn't happen because Creator/WarnerBros executives were concerned that the film was not "toyetic".

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Reports and rumors abound of what the planned fifth film in the series (titled ''Batman Triumphant'' by most sources, and alleged by some to act as a series GrandFinale) would've been like. Some of the wildest rumors even said that there were talks to have Creator/JackNicholson reprise his role as a BackFromTheDead Joker.
