** An iteration of the script was written by Bernstein and his then-wife Creator/NoraEphron. It managed to anger just about everyone involved in the project, particularly Woodward who [[https://www.washingtonian.com/2016/04/03/all-the-presidents-men-movie-oral-history/ objected]] that their screenplay "made Bernstein the center of the Universe." Goldman considered it unusable and scrapped the entire script, except for the scene where Bernstein sneaks into the D.A.'s office by placing a fake phone call to his secretary.

** An iteration of the script was written by Bernstein and his then-wife Creator/NoraEphron.Creator/NoraEphron wrote an unsolicited version of the script, which Bernstein brought to the film producers. It managed to anger just about everyone involved in the project, particularly Woodward who [[https://www.washingtonian.com/2016/04/03/all-the-presidents-men-movie-oral-history/ objected]] that their screenplay "made Bernstein the center of the Universe." Goldman William Goldman, the contracted screenwriter, considered it the alternate script unusable and scrapped the entire script, except it all save for the a scene where Bernstein sneaks into the D.A.'s office by placing a fake phone call to his secretary. Ephron was just starting her career at the time and didn't realize how badly the unsolicited alternate script breached Hollywood industry norms. She apologized to Goldman years later.

** Since he was playing Executive Editor Ben Bradlee, Creator/JasonRobards felt that Bradlee should always have a presence in the newsroom, and as Executive Editor, Bradlee ''would'' need to be present daily, so on days when he wasn't filming scenes with other actors, he made the choice to come in and stay in the Bradlee office set so when the scenes are taking place between Woodward, Bernstein, and other reporters, Bradlee can often be glimpsed in the background seated at his desk. Sometimes Robards would bring a book to read.

* ApprovalOfGod: In a bizarre example, Nixon's White House chief of staff H.R. Haldeman saw the movie in theaters shortly before reporting to prison for Watergate-related crimes. According to his wife Jo, Haldeman enjoyed the movie and [[ActuallyPrettyFunny laughed uproariously]] at the line where Deep Throat chastises Woodward that "you've got people feeling sorry for Haldeman. I didn't think that was possible." Though he told her afterwards that he was grateful that no one in the theater recognized him.

Creator Chosen Casting is when the casting of an adaptation is influenced by the creator of the work being adapted, which in this case would be Woodward and Bernstein. The makers of the adaptation choosing the cast of the adaptation is just how movies are usually made.

* CreatorChosenCasting:
** Creator/HalHolbrook was the first and only choice to play the shadowy informant Deep Throat, mainly because he looked just like the real man.
** Creator/JasonRobards was always Creator/RobertRedford's first choice to play Ben Bradlee. When Alan J. Pakula came on board, he instantly agreed with Redford's decision.

* OvertookTheManga: The full story of Watergate was still on-going when the book was published on June 1974, so the Watergate hearings and Nixon's resignation, which happened on July and August respectively, are only related in the movie and by teletyped headlines before the end credits.

* ReferencedBy:
** In ''Film/AndyWarholsBad'', released in 1977, Mary says that the last film she saw in a theater was "the Watergate one."
** Creator/ChrisCarter often quotes this movie as one of his bigger inspirations for ''Series/TheXFiles'', wherein a prominent character used the Deep Throat codename. Perhaps not coincidentally, one of the names on Woodward and Bernstein's list of CREEP employees is "Scully".
** The famous "follow the money" line is quoted in ''Series/TheWire'':
--->You follow the drugs, you get drug addicts and drug dealers. You start to follow the money and you don't know where the fuck it's gonna take you.
** ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' episode "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS6E5SideshowBobRoberts Sideshow Bob Roberts]]" features several references to the film, including the pull-out of Lisa looking over the voting records, the music, and the clandestine meeting with Smithers in a parking garage.
** An episode of ''WesternAnimation/DennisTheMenace'' is entitled "All the President's Menace".

* SelfAdaptation: {{Averted}}. Woodward and Bernstein offered to write the screenplay after being dissatisfied with Creator/WilliamGoldman's first draft. Unfortunately, screenwriting is an art unto itself that neither of them knew much about. They also put in a huge number of reporters' gags and in-jokes and a subplot about how each of them tried to score with women throughout the time they were investigating. The only remnant of this is in the early scene where Bernstein talks to Sharon Lyons (Penny Peyser) at the outdoor cafe.

* ActorInspiredElement: While meeting with Carl Bernstein, Creator/DustinHoffman noticed that Bernstein smoked so much that there were traces of cigarette ash on all of his shirts and ties, so he made sure that was included in the movie, as well as the line directed at Bernstein, "Is there any place you don't smoke?"
* BeamMeUpScotty: The famous "Follow the money" line doesn't appear in either the book nor any documentations of Watergate.

* CreatorBacklash: According to Ben Bradlee, the real Howard Simons felt that he and his role were fatally shortchanged in the script and that he never got over his resentment.
