* Seeing flashbacks of Janine with her young son, Caleb. Paired with the reveal from last season, we know that her little boy isn't alive anymore. He died four years ago in a car crash, while Janine was still in Boston as a Handmaid. June told her he's living in California on a beach, to comfort her. What makes it all the harder is that Janine most likely realizes that her son isn't alive, and it could explain her desperation in wanting to have another child in her life, and why she was so attached to the daughter she had been forced to give up to the Putnam's.

* In “Unwomen”, June breaks down upon seeing the blood-splattered wall riddled with bullet holes in The Boston Globe. Later on, she gathers all the personal belongings from cubicles, and creates a shrine to honour those who lost their lives at that same wall. Everything and everyone had been hit hard after the government fell and the coup to wrest control from it shows in these environmental explorative moments.

** The handmaids' mass funeral after the bombing is a solemn, beautiful affair, with all the attending handmaids in solemn, beautiful gowns and veils and even immaculate caskets in elegant black and their signature blood red, all in the white snow against the black of bare trees in winter. Aunt Lydia has arranged it herself, it seems, as there are no Commanders or Wives in attendance, showing us a rare moment of respect and honor that Gilead has ritualized for Handmaids. And then when Lydia gives a list of the dead, she uses their service names, completely ruining any semblance of honor it might have given them. Everything wrong with the Handmaid system, summed up in a roll call.

** The scene where she destroys her bathroom mirror and the image of herself in it. After being single for such a long time and facing what she perceived as rejection for being too aggressive sexually, she sees her makeup and the self hatred kicks in immediately.

Added DiffLines:

** Eleanor and Joseph being forced to perform the Ceremony. The Commander tries to weasel out of it while June makes it clear exactly what will happen if they don't do it; poor Eleanor is caught between them like an animal in a trap, and the BigNo she wails when she realizes that she's going to have to witness her husband rape her closest friend is just heartbreaking.

There doesn't seem to be any point to this natter except to quash any potential sympathy for the Wife, even though she's doing her best with the options she has. Doesn't add anything as far as tearjerking, just undermines the previous point.

** Until, you know, you remember that this woman is holding Emily down while her husband rapes her. Then it gets tearjerking in a different way.

* In Episode 9 "Allegiance" a candlelight vigil is held for the American soldiers who were killed. As Tuello reads out loud their names, the mourners are surrounded by protesters yelling hateful messages, almost drowning out his voice. And just as Commander Vance's daughter is reciting the Pledge of Allegiance (with June's help, because she is overwhelmed), gunshots are heard. One of the bullets hits the American flag and almost hits June and Emma.

* When it's revealed that Janine was recaptured and Lydia goes to see her, Janine is utterly broken and tearfully begs to not get sent back to be a Handmaid again, even stating that she'd rather die. Lydia tears up at the thought of Janine being executed, and warmly tells her that she'll be kept safe, knowing full well by this point just how hideous being a Handmaid can be. This spurs Aunt Lydia to keep Janine as an assistant - and therefore safe under her protection.

* After her private audience with Commander Putnam, Esther attempts to poison herself and Janine. They barely survive. When Aunt Lydia goes to the hospital to check on her, the traumatized Esther is secured to her bed with restraints. Worse, thanks to the Commander taking advantage of his position, she is pregnant. Even worse, she will have to remain hospitalized until her baby is due, as her pregnancy is considered high risk.
** Aunt Lydia is horrified because the rape occurred before Esther was posted to the Putnam home. Had the guy waited a few days or weeks, it would all have been part of the Ceremony and not problematic, per Lydia's way of thinking. Never mind that Esther is a teenager whose husband had already put through hell.

** After that Emily and her family attempt to escape to Canada, only to find out that their marriage is no longer valid therefore she does not have dual citizenship from getting married to her Canadian wife and cannot cross the border. All Emily can do is urge her family to go on without her, play with their young son one last time before they board the plane, and tearfully hold and stare at their invalidated marriage certificate.

* The first child brought to Joseph's house for the rescue mission asks June many questions about what life will be like: will she be allowed to wear what she wants, will she have the choice to not be a wife or mother if she doesn't want to, etc. It's unclear how old the girl is, but she's very young--and she's already been hammered over and over with the notion that she, as a girl, only has one "true purpose" to marry a man and/or bear children. It's obvious that even if many Gilead children are 'happy,' and probably manipulated into Gilead's views, there are still children who know that the world they live in is wrong, and are so hopeful to escape it. On top of this, this little girl is later reunited with her father--showing that yes, these children do remember their families, and they want to be together again.
