** The deterioration of the relationship between husband and wife adds to the tragedy. In Enjou's flashback, it's shown that both parties did love each other very much. This came crashing down when Enjou's father accidentally killed a person in a drunk driving accident. After losing his job and being harassed by others, his family was forced to move to start their lives over. Despite this setback, Enjou's father was willing to shoulder the burden and wanted his wife and son to continue living happily. Enjou's mother, while appreciative of this, went out of her way to help as well. However, the constant cruelty of people not letting Enjou's father move on from his mistake drove him to despair and the constant relocating wore away at his psyche. This lead to his son's eventual apathy for his parents and his life in general; he decided to turn to alcohol for escape and take out all his frustration and anger on his wife, the love from their marriage now gone.

* Azaka reminiscing about the old neighbor of their childhood. His family had abandoned him and he was all alone, but young Mikiya befriended him and became his LivingEmotionalCrutch. The neighbor soon passed away of old age and even young Azaka was very depressed about it. Little Mikiya decided not to cry and hold back, much to Azaka’s concern.

* Shiki and Shirazumi's reactions towards Mikiya's [[spoiler:supposed death]].
** Shirazumi's reaction in the light novel. [[spoiler:After stabbing Mikiya in a fit of rage, he calms down and has a huge SanitySlippage moment, reminiscing about his high school days with Mikiya all the while]]. It's sad, and it's twisted, and we see a human side to Shirazumi that's almost always buried, a human side that Mikiya's presence brought within him. Which makes it even more of a TearJerker when it's revealed by WordOfGod that Shirazumi was a DeadpanSnarker with a FriendlessBackground...and you realize that Mikiya was probably the first real friend he'd ever had. Too bad the film made Shirazumi more focused on Shiki and handled Mikiya's [[spoiler:"death"]] quickly.

After reflecting and expressing her grief, Shiki suddenly gains her resolve, enters into a TranquilFury and slashes Shirazumi in seconds.]]
