* Starting in 1.6, when a player gets married, the [=NPCs=] will start congratulating the player, and certain [=NPCs=] will have unique dialogue based on who you marry. These are usually on the [[Heartwarming/StardewValley sweeter side]], but if the player marries Sam, Vincent will tearfully beg them to not take his brother away from him. This is even sadder if the player marries Sam on Year 1, as their father Kent hasn't yet returned, so Sam is the only figure besides Jodi who's there for him.

* The first time you get the Green Rain in year one, some of the responses are a bit sad:
** Most people in general are sheltering in home or the saloon (Except for Linus and Demetrius) and are visibly scared.
** Jodi will say she wishes Kent were here.
** Evelyn however is a pretty sad one: She is afraid this is a sign of the apocalypse and that Alex wouldn't have found his way before the end. It's more or less impossible to have married Alex by then (unless one ''maybe'' was able to speedrun or mod it so they could) but even then, think of it from her perspective: Alex might have ''just'' gotten married... and the world ends.
** Robin is [[AngerBornOfWorry angry that Demetrius is outside in the rain because she's worried about what it might do]].

1.1 update added additional events. He recovers, but talking a falling-down drunk Shane out of throwing himself off a cliff is pretty heart-wrenching.expanding upon how little he cares for himself.

* One of the events added in 1.1 is a rather bleak scene which sees Marnie finding him passed out drunk in his room. She enlists your help in bringing him around, which involves dumping the contents of your watering can over his head (and provides a bit of light relief given his cartoonish reaction), but then the mood becomes serious again. Marnie gently prompts Shane to consider the future, asking what his overall plan is...to which Shane replies that he hopes that [[DrivenToSuicide he won't be around long enough]] to ''need'' a long-term plan. As if that weren't bad enough, he hasn't noticed that Jas has wandered into the room-- you know, the little girl who lost her mother and father and now only has Shane and Marnie to count on? Whose guardian has just stated his intention to die and leave her behind again? She bursts into tears and flees, leaving a remorseful Shane to slump to his knees in despair as the player looks on, uncomfortable at being caught in the situation. What's worse is the implication that this is a relatively regular thing that happens, as Marnie doesn't seem even shocked or scared at Shane's condition... Just let that sink in.
