** In the final showdown, Dolarhyde holds Josh at knifepoint. Will decides to bait Dolarhyde into attacking him instead by yelling the same threats that Dolarhyde's grandmother used. Watching Dolarhyde go from threatening Josh with a knife to protectively hugging him to shield him from his father's "abuse" is a rather crushing display of Francis' pain and the good man he might have been if hadn't had such a horrible life.

** After Dolarhyde spends the night with Reba, he's compelled to 'consult' the Dragon. The Dragon demands he kill her but, for the first time, Francis defies it, asserting that Reba is harmless. Ultimately the Dragon tries to force him into submission, only for Francis to defiantly shove a shotgun barrel in his mouth, making the Dragon subside. It just goes to show that Francis was only ever a little bit of love away from being a caring, loving man, and his abusive childhood and delusions were only things burying that natural part of him.
