* The back of a package of ''card sleeves'' manages to pull this off, since card sleeve company Dragon Shield started putting small stories about the dragons depicted on their packaging. The "Petrol"-colored sleeves (an oily blue) depict a lumbering, swamplike dragon covered in sludge and with massive horns named Abigan. The story of this dragon? [[HappilyAdopted She and her twin sister were abandoned as dragonlings, but adopted by a human family who loved them as their own daughters.]] When their human parents died, Abigan entered a depressive spiral and now spends her days doing little more than eating and sleeping as she has no energy to do anything else. It hits pretty close to home for a packaging blurb.

* When the Dodgers left Brooklyn for Los Angeles after the 1957 season -- at least from Brooklyn's perspective. Sports teams move all the time, but what set the Dodgers apart from most was the fact that the team was doing well in a market that actively loved and rallied around its team. Brooklynites protested the move with public demonstrations and even a [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQ8XpKwc3A0 musical single]], to no avail. Imagine that you're a kid, and your favorite team leaves your hometown, and then two years later your favorite stadium is torn down to make room for an ugly apartment complex. Even to this day, people are ''still'' reeling from it in some quarters of Brooklyn.

* Wouter Weylandt's life ending crash during stage 3 of the 2011 edition of Giro d'Italia.
* Young Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez passed away in a boating accident at the age of 24, two days before he was supposed to make his next start. He was beloved throughout Miami, as "Jose Day" would cause spikes in game attendance and television ratings. Tributes came pouring in throughout the league, with stories being shared by numerous players. He was an incredible talent, but also had a huge sense of passion and joy for the game. The Marlins canceled their game that day, and the next day, all the players wore his jersey, #16. The game was one long TearJerker and also a CrowningMomentOfAwesome:
** First, the team held an emotional [[https://twitter.com/FOXSportsFL/status/780557708961296384/video/1 pre-game ceremony]] for him, which included an incredibly sad rendition of "Take Me Out To The Ballgame".
** Then, Marlins teammate Dee Gordon bats right-handed, as Jose did, for one pitch. He continues batting... and hits [[https://twitter.com/Marlins/status/780553982930321408/video/1 a home run]] [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome on the second pitch of the game]], rounding the bases in tears.
** The Marlins would win the game, afterwards [[https://twitter.com/Marlins/status/780606639896350720/video/1 circling the mound]], saying a prayer, and leaving their hats on the field to the crowd's song of "[[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming Joseeeee, Jose Jose Joseeeee, Joseeeee, Joseeeeeee]]"...
* On October 22, 2016, the Chicago Cubs won the 2016 National League pennant against the Dodgers, earning the team's first trip to the World Series in ''71 years'', meaning 71 years of misery and heartbreak were finally over for the North Side of Chicago. Even better, on November 2, 2016, the Chicago Cubs, annually hailed as "lovable losers" because of their infamous longstanding championship drought, won the World Series, coming back from a three games to one deficit against the Cleveland Indians. That's a whopping ''108 years'' of championship heartbreak concluded, with the supposed "Curse of the Billy Goat" dead and buried. To say that many ManlyTears were shed in Chicago that season is an understatement.
** Speaking of the Cubs, what happened to poor [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Bartman_incident Steve Bartman]] at Wrigley Field in 2003 is utterly heartbreaking, especially if you've seen the ''[[Creator/{{ESPN}} 30 for 30]]'' documentary about it.
** Ninety year old Cubs fan Dorthy Farrell, a Cubs fan since 1984, was interviewed by Fox Sports after the final game. Her father, mother, and two brothers were all Cubs fans who never got to see the team win the championship.
** And like Red Sox fans 12 years prior, Cubs fans across the nation have flocked to cemeteries, to tell loved ones that have passed away, that their beloved Cubs had finally won the World Series. One man even went to his father's grave and sat there through Game 7 [[http://www.koaa.com/story/33627432/cubs-fan-shares-win-with-late-father playing an audio broadcast]] so he can hear his team win it all.
** Hours after the Cubs won the Series, Cubs fans went to the brick walls outside of Wrigley Field to write down family members names who never got to see the Cubs win it all. And while the messages are going down to make room for more renovations, the owners have promised to take pictures of the wall to immortalize the tributes.
** Many Cubs fans have also flocked towards Harry Caray's grave site to plant what else? Green apples, Cub mementos and of course Budweiser
** One must spare a thought for the Indians, who hadn't won a World Series for 68 years, and who wanted this title just as much as the Cubs did (and who now take the dubious honor of 'Longest Drought Since Their Previous WS Win' from the Cubs).

[[AC:Mythology and Religion]]
* Pretty much any mythology with a built-in Twilight of the Gods event. Norse mythology being the king of this, giving us Ragnarok, where a string of tragedies climaxes in the apocalyptic war that slays ''everything'' except for a small handful of the gods (two of which have to be resurrected from Hel) and two humans.
** Of course, given how [[DeathSeeker furiously determined]] the gods are/were to do the whole "End of the World" thing properly, it's also a CrowningMomentOfAwesome. An unusual pairing, but one that makes perfect sense when viewed through the [[ValuesDissonance particular lens]] of Norse culture.
** Loki is a shockingly tragic figure. He goes from the prankster to the one who brings about Ragnarok, probably partially due to being chained with his own son's intestines with caustic poison down on his face for who-knows-how long. In the original version, he apparently wasn't even the one who didn't cry for Baldur -- he was punished for something else. Before that, his [[MouthStitchedShut lips were sewn shut]] after wriggling out of a bet with some dwarves. Yes, he wasn't exactly morally upstanding, but did he really deserve all the gods laughing at him, and then being tortured constantly?
*** Reading earlier stories about, say, [[CrowningMomentOfFunny Loki helping Thor disguise hismelf as Freya in a bridal gown]] make it feel like they were almost... well, [[HarsherInHindsight friends]]. There's just something tragic about how it all ended... and something beautiful about how the world will all begin again, eventually.
*** It's no wonder the poor guy makes such a TragicVillain in {{Film/Thor}}.

[[AC:This Site]]
* Somewhat obviously, the TearJerker [[{{Postmodern}} pages.]]
* {{Determinator}} and its example sections, especially the real-life section for obvious reasons, are often tearjerkers, both when it pays off and [[DownerEnding when it doesn't]] for different reasons.
* The LonersAreFreaks trope? Calling someone a freak and outcasting them just because they prefer to keep to themselves? At least just plain sad.
* If you thought [[spoiler:Chip leaving]] in SonicUnleashed was sad, the [[WildMassGuessing WMG theory]] about [[spoiler:him actually DYING]] is even worse.
* The AllOfTheOtherReindeer page. Ostracizing someone from society and his or her peers is too cruel, depressing, and sad.

[[AC:Toys]]
* ''Toys/{{BIONICLE}}'' has plenty:
** The DisneyDeath of Jaller in ''Bionicle: Mask of Light''.

** The online serials. [[spoiler: The body count just keeps getting higher. Off the top of my head, there's Botar, Ancient, possibly Lewa, and several matoran.]]
*** The death of a troop of Ta-Matoran who attempted to find refuge on the island of Mata Nui... [[spoiler: not realizing that the "island" is actually the massive robot's face, and that face is, along with the rest of the robot, currently flying through the vacuum of space.]] Guess what happened next.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgSCzSXxYuI&feature=channel_video_title This]] utterly heartbreaking tribute to Bionicle and all those who grew up with it.
** The epilogue of the book ''Time Trap'' is of the happy variant, as Vakama and his fellow Turaga, along with the entire population of Mata Nui return to Metru Nui's shores and are greeted by friends (and Turaga Dume, their former governor) they haven't seen for over a thousand years.
* While it's not as much of a tearjerker, the normally-happy {{Toys/Lalaloopsy}} put out a couple of dolls called "Sir Battlescarred" and "Lady Stillwaiting." Since the dolls gained the personality from the fabric that created them, there's probably a very sad story surrounding them (since their names even suggests this).

* Creator/NeilGaiman's current (January 2010) [[http://journal.neilgaiman.com journal entries]] about the last days of his cancer-stricken blind cat Zoe are enough to melt a heart of stone.

At the end of the credits, we hear the long, high beep of the machine, meaning that Mimsie didn't make it. Even sadder when you find out that 1988 was the year the ''real'' Mimsie died at age 18.
** But hey, most cats don't make it that long.
* Part 6 of ''Seven Ages Of Rock'', which focuses on American alternative rock such as Music/{{REM}} and Music/{{Nirvana}}. It mentions Music/KurtCobain's life, and in a couple of his interviews, he sounded kind of sad. You can't blame him; he's been through a spiraling depression that not even good friend [[Music/{{REM}} Michael Stipe]] can get him out of.
* 'From the bottom of Heart', a VisualNovel, is one in and for itself. 'Let's go to an amusement park together!'
* [[http://SynDuo.deviantart.com/art/Then-n-Now-94849067 This]] picture, ''especially'' if you remember classic Disney, remember going to Disneyland as a kid and meeting those mascots, and...
* As funny as Creator/ChristopherTitus's stand-up routines are, there are some bits that hit ''hard.'' For instance, when he talks about his dad.
-->'''Titus:''' What did he tell me my entire life? "You’re gonna need grandpa around to raise that kid. Grandpa’s gonna turn that kid into an adult." What else did you stuff up my ass all my life? “Step up, or step aside." Isn't that right? "Step up, or step aside.” AND WHAT HAPPENED?! THE WORLD IS FALLING APART, I’VE GOT TWO LITTLE KIDS ''and you’re not here.''
* There's a very well acted Documentary about the French Revolution, and they showed the part about Madame Du Barry. Supposedly, it was EnforcedMethodActing, and the actress playing Madame Du Barry must have ''really'' been a good actress... because the people playing the extras looked shocked as the actress struggled and screamed as she was lead to the scaffold, managing to break away several times only to be caught and dragged back before collapsing and shouting, "You're going to hurt me! Why?!" and then they showed the scene of forcing her into the ([[SpecialEffectFailure obviously fake]]) guillotine, with the ''really'' nervous looking extras. It also didn't help that the narrator said it took several people to bring her there, and that her screams could be heard from across Seine.
* Creator/{{PBS}} once showed a documentary on parrots, and near the end it showed a segment on what would happen if they're not given proper stimuli. It shows the poor birds in what is basically a parrot equivalent of a mental hospital, with the parrots painfully squawking and plucking their own feathers out because [[GoMadFromTheIsolation they didn't have anything or anyone to interact with in their previous homes.]]
* ''Magazine/AmigaPower'''s review of ''Kick Off 96'', in its farewell issue, was terribly depressing. Longtime reviewer Stuart Campbell debates a KangarooCourt over who bears more responsibility for the UsefulNotes/{{Amiga}} platform's demise: publishers who shoveled out broken games with no playtesting, or him for refusing to grade them on a FourPointScale. He is found guilty of killing the Amiga, and executed by firing squad.
* [[http://rememorable.deviantart.com/art/You-Wanna-Speak-WHAT-191474193 This]] Comic. Its really heartbreaking that genuine interest in a culture is dismissed as childish.
* While most of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's Christmas concerts tend toward warm and fuzzy, they do sneak a tear jerker in every now and then.
** One notable occasion was their 2002 concert, where they portrayed the story of the UsefulNotes/WorldWarI Christmas truce, narrated by Creator/WalterCronkite.
** Another came from the 2004 concert, called ''A Christmas Bell for Anya''. [[spoiler: It tells the story of a Russian village renowned for their bell makers, and their traditional bell ringing by 12 young girls around the village's scene of the Christ child, and Anya is having her own bell crafted for her by her father. The bell is completed three days before Christmas and Anya eagerly awaits the day. The day before, a band of marauders roaming the country in the chaos of the Russian Revolution come to the town. When the dust settles, Anya's father is found cradling her body. As Christmas approaches he suddenly has the sense that she is near and asking that he ring her bell on Christmas.]]
* One educational video about the horrors of drunk driving and the consequences that came from it: It was showcasing several instances of the consequences of drunk driving, and although the video had a very somber tone overall, one woman in particular stood out. She was very young, and pretty, and had been hit by a drunk driver. It didn't kill her, but she was completely immobilized and mentally handicapped. She spent the rest of her life rotting away in a bed. Her parents came to visit her, and you could tell she recognized them, but all she could do was stare at them, and her dad held her hand while he was there. Her hand was so tiny, and weak looking, and limp, and just kind of lay there, and she just looked so helpless.
** A variation on that was one of the "home movie" drunk driving promos, you'd see happy healthy kids doing something and then "Killed by a drunk driver" and the date. This one had a teenage girl who was mostly paralyzed, being taken gently through some physical therapy. It was clear she'd never walk again or have any kind of normal life. "Jean Smith was hit by a drunk driver and died... ''Sixteen years later.''"
** Or one featuring a couple dancing and laughing at their wedding, with the date of death being ''the day after''.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EswrrM8rLKM This anti-drunk driving PSA]] was designed to appeal to people of Native American heritage. The father is played by Gary Farmer (Cayuga) who played the father in ''Film/SmokeSignals.''
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eBUcBfkVCo This]] Website/{{TED}} conference about depression. It goes into detail about it and how you can help it. While it has some funny and [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming hopeful]] moments, the worst parts is when he describes it and how others describe it. If you have depression, it may help, but you're probably not going to get through all twenty minutes without some shedding some tears.
* [[https://youtu.be/vOHXGNx-E7E This video.]] The girl reveals herself in the end to be Amanda Todd, who committed [[DrivenToSuicide suicide]] less than a month later, on October 10th, 2012. What makes it worse is that when she attempted suicide before, ''her bullies didn't stop,'' [[NoSympathy instead taunting her further and hoping that she dies the next time.]] Truly heartbreaking.

* When the Dodgers left Brooklyn for Los Angeles after the 1957 season -- at least from Brooklyn's perspective.

Seven pitches into the game, home plate umpire John [=McSherry=] called time and signaled for one of the other umpires to replace him. Suddenly, [=McSherry=] collapsed on the field with efforts to resuscitate him unsuccessful; he died at a nearby hospital within the hour. The remaining umpires tried to continue but the grieving players and managers (Ray Knight had to console umpire Tom Hallion) convinced them otherwise and the game was postponed.
