* Almost everything involving Takeru [[spoiler:fleeing back to the Extra timeline after Alternative Marimo is killed. At first, he's just happy at being back home, until everything starts going horribly wrong. Turns out, Takeru is actually a "Causality Conductor", which means the very fact he still possesses memories of the Alternative world causes events that occurred in Alternative to repeat themselves in Extra. This is shown when Extra Marimo is killed when her head is shoved into a meatgrinder, and Sumika is crushed by fallen debris and barely clinging to life. Even worse, the memories of his closest friends start to get erased, culminating in them forgetting he ever existed. Suffice to say, the knowledge that his very existence in the Extra world is actively making everything ''worse'' doesn't help his already shattered psyche.]]

* The DownerBeginning of the Muv-Luv Alternative anime. The fall of Sadogashima perfectly captures the despair in the Muv-Luv verse. While the defense forces did well in the beginning of the battle, the appearance of the fort-class promptly changes the tide, and once one particular dead fort-class collapses a wall, the BETA swarm into the civillian residential areas, killing them all and collapsing the main defense line.
**Komaki Sayoko's team could only find *one* survivor amongst a collapsed shelter whose residents got eaten by the BETA, and she loses her flight leader, who shuts down her mech to get her to live before she dies from getting swarmed by destroyer-classes.
** The base's general dread as things get worse, but they resolve to fight to the end. When the captain of the Shinano offers the base commanders to help them evacuate, they instead resolve to stay behind and only send back a "We're grateful".

With the exception of the two members who [[spoiler: blew themselves up (and even their deaths are horrifying), all of the team members, minus two]], died in slow, painfully excruciating ways, as if to twist the knife further.

* The ending to Unlimited. Just, ''wow.'' At the end of a Christmas party at the end of the 24th, the squad is told that they had been participating in a plan known as Alternative IV, which is never elaborated on, and which had failed, much to the entire bases dismay. The new plan is Alternative V, which takes a leaf from ''Series/{{Battlestar Galactica|Reimagined}}'''s book: Take a hundred thousand of the best and brightest humans and establish a colony, leaving the earth... and the countless millions still on it... to the BETA. Takeru has a chance to go with them on the last shuttle leaving earth. He refuses, instead adapting the special ID card for boarding to accomodate his love interest at the end of the game. When she finds out about this, she tearfully asks, ''begs'' Takeru to reconsider and join the colonists. The player has only two options: first, [[spoiler:to snap the ID card in half, allowing Takeru and his LI to stay and face certain destruction together,]] or second, [[spoiler: to insist that the LI goes, as proof of Earth's existence, and Takeru's.
