** The non-canonical ending is no picnic either. Richtofen wins, kills Maxis and apparently condemns Samantha's soul to eternal damnation, and he rewards Samuel for leading Victis to help him by taking control of his body. Richtofen then realizes that for some reason... he ''can't get out''. And what's worse, Samuel is ''still'' in his body, and it's not entirely clear just how much autonomy he has over his body anymore. Even worse? Richtofen admits that Samuel was not supposed to survive this GrandTheftMe. Oh, and [[RunningGag worst of all?]] Richtofen makes no effort to end the zombie apocalypse like Maxis at least claimed to want to do (and canonically did, in his own way); Victis is still stuck on a world overrun by zombies where humanity will likely simply go extinct, and he is now just as at the mercy of the zombies as the last survivors of Earth. Once again, everything Victis did was AllForNothing, and it makes one wonder if Maxis destroying Earth [[MercyKill was also done to put the inhabitants of the damned planet out of their misery]].

*** Victis gets screwed over for the final time. After already being manipulated into destroying the Ultimis Earth, they narrowly escaped the destruction of it and the Ultimis dimension thanks to Primis Richtofen who promised them they could survive for a later purpose. That later purpose is now revealed to just be doubling down and helping destroy the entire Aether multiverse, themselves included, with no way to save them this time. Russman will never regain his lost memories, Misty and Marlton will [[WillTheyOrWontThey never get to have the loving relationship they want]], and Samuel will just be the puppet who helped direct everyone to their final demise. At least Ultimis and Primis died happy if misled; Victis dies in distress as they and the rest of reality are cast into the Dark Aether.

** Samuel cries out for Richtofen's help after not receiving any further instructions from him or Nikolai, asking what they do now, and protesting that they did everything they were asked to do. * There's also a section of ''Revelations'' based on ''Mob'' that has an area where you stand over a walkway, and the floor is nearly pitch-black from lack of lighting, but you hear non-stop cries and moans the whole time. Given that the Alcatraz purgatory dimension is established by ''Blood'' to still be out there, it's easy to interpret this as just a reminder that so many souls are still suffering in the Apothicons' personal hell - and that the ''Mob'' characters are among them, unable to be saved.
* Monty details the backstory of the Shadow Man, saying they were both Keepers and the absolute best of friends until the Shadow Man was corrupted by the Apothicons. Monty sounds absolutely pained to remember how he was his best friend, and wearily relates how he's now spearheading the greatest threat to reality.

to:

** It's easy to read the song as being from the perspective of either Monty or the Shadow Man (or both) given the series is revealed to be, at its core, about the feud between two best friends who fell apart. This is emphasized by the theatrical trailer of "The Gift" wherein Monty is taking a walk, only to stumble upon the recently released Shadow Man. While the Shadow Man sneers at Monty before he unleashes hell, Monty bitterly glares at him, his heart still broken over his fall to evil. All they have left is their hatred and need to destroy each other.

* Towards the climax of ''Ancient Evil'', Order-possessed Bruno turns on and violently kills Shaw. The latter doesn't understand what's going on, and begs and pleads for his life from his good friend. Bruno himself is having an internal battle as he tries to stop himself, but ultimately goes through with it, and converts Shaw into the Order.
** Worse still, the entire Chaos story ends on a DownerEnding cliffhanger; Bruno and Shaw converted, Scarlet unconscious, Alistair turned to stone, Medusa about to win, and Diego the only one left to fight her. What makes it awful is the meta; ''Black Ops 4'' was one of the lesser-recieved Zombies modes owing to a lot of bad mechanics and wonky writing [[note]]which admittedly included Chaos owing to its ScheduleSlip with ''Dead of the Night'', and the writing not updated to match[[/note]], making it so that Treyarch abandoned the Chaos story and hard rebooted the just-ended Aether with the admittedly well-recieved Dark Aether arc. * A deleted conversation from ''Buried'' is actually rather upsetting. Samuel makes a plea for the others to listen to him and Richtofen, but the other three harshly rebuke him, one by one, and order him to shut up. Even his sole true friend, Russman, goes off on him. Samuel may not be the most pleasant person but it's still upsetting to hear how even during the apocalypse and when most of the group has become FireForgedFriends, everyone else still hates his guts. Worse, this hatred ends up leading Victis to side with Maxis and allows him to destroy the Earth.
