** Two of [[Music/BruceDickinson Bruce Dickinson's]] solo albums, ''Accident Of Birth'' and ''The Chemical Wedding'', are relentlessly cynical. Both have songs about dreams being shattered, the world ending, and mankind ultimately failing in its quest for joy and fulfillment. In fact, Bruce has said that ''The Chemical Wedding'' is basically a concept album, with each song being about some kind of negative experience ("King In Crimson" is about fear, the title track is about tragedy, etc.).

* ''Music/RedHotChiliPeppers'' is usually pretty far on the idealistic side, as most of their songs have an underlying message of hope, compassion and/or simply having a good time. That said, there ''are'' moments where they veer more towards the cynical end of the scale. Such as in the song "Californication" (which paints a VERY cynical portrait of Hollywood and its cultural influence).

* Music/IronMaiden zig-zags between the two ends but, ultimately, falls more on the cynical side due to their large number of HumansAreBastards songs and the rather unhappy outcomes for many of their songs' protagonists.

* Music/IronMaiden zig-zags between the two ends but, ultimately, falls more on the cynical side due to their large number of HumansAreBastards songs and the rather unhappy outcomes for many of their songs' protagonists. "Tears Of A Clown" is a particularly interesting case, in that Bruce questions why Creator/RobinWilliams was so unhappy but also suggests that maybe his suicide was ultimately for the best ''because'' of how hopelessly miserable he was.
* Music/{{Queen}} has flirted with both ends of the scale but usually stays on the Idealistic end. Many of their songs have an underlying ThePowerOfFriendship message, and even the songs written while frontman Music/FreddieMercury was slowly dying of [=AIDS=] have an underlying message of hope and moving forward during such devastating times. That said, they do have a couple songs that fall on the Cynical end, such as "Bohemian Rhapsody" (which ends with the protagonist basically giving up on trying to live a good life and choosing to, instead, live as an apathetic drifter) and "Hammer To Fall" (which is basically about waiting patiently for mankind to be wiped out by a Nuclear War).

** Music/{{Testament}} is a generally cynical band, with many songs being about how corrupt politicians and society at large are. They do, however, have a few moments of optimism, particularly when Chuck Billy is paying tribute to his Native American heritage.

* [[Music/HidetoMatsumoto hide]] is near the middle of the scale but leans cynical. His songs include dark lyrics about date rape such as "Genkai Haretsu", and angry protest songs such as "Doubt" and "Oblaat", along with themes of suicide. Despite this, he's not wholly cynical, as demonstrated by songs in the middle of the scale such as "Dice" and "Pink Spider", with his overarching messages being about pushing forward through pain and depression and BeYourself.

* Thrash Metal:
** Music/{{Metallica}} and Music/{{Anthrax}} are usually somewhere in the middle. Their message is generally, “Yes, things are hard. But it’s ultimately up to us to make them better.”
** Music/{{Slayer}} and Music/{{Megadeth}}, on the other hand, are relentlessly cynical. The former band takes an extremely pessimistic view of human nature with nary a sense of hope in sight. While the latter, especially as of late, has an almost CrapsackWorld view of humanity. It isn’t for nothing that they have an album called “Dystopia.”

* Music/PinkFloyd takes an extremely cynical view on life, exemplified by albums such as ''Music/{{Animals}}'' and ''Music/TheWall''. Earlier albums when Syd Barrett was part of the band were, if not exactly idealistic, far less grim (compare ''Music/ThePiperAtTheGatesOfDawn'' with the previously mentioned albums).
