* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: Freddy offers his protection to Nasir after painstakingly explaining that without it, he'll be murdered.

** Nasir gets a montage where he does fairly banal and innocent things, such as attend college, cheer the school team at practice and debate his brother on sports during a family dinner, establishing him as a regular, wholesome young man.

* AccidentalInnuendo: Stone jokingly points out how a man in his support group saying he's "holding his own" in his dating life is an [[ADateWithRosiePalms unfortunate choice of words]].

* LuxuryPrisonSuite: While other prisoners sleep on cots in the communal room, Freddy has a private cell featuring quite a bit of furniture.

** Stone is willing to use illegal means, such as paying off a patient to photograph medical files.

** Alison ''Crowe'' seems to be on the up-and-up, but turns out to be a scavenger who is only interested in using Nasir. She also loves "crowing" to be the media to aggrandize herself.

* MeaningfulName: The tall brute in Nasir's first holding cell is named Hightower.

** Alison Crowe is introduced smoothly delivering a victory speech to a media scrum and even trying to point out the hypocrisy of a jouralist asking her a question, establishing her as a capable and intelligent, yet attention mongering attorney.

* FriendlyEnemy: Stone is on friendly terms with judges and even a top DA. A judge congratulates him on getting a high-profile attorney, and the DA gives sympathy to Stone after Crowe mocks him in court.

** Stone being in the "right place, right time" to pick up Nasir as a client.

* AmoralAttorney: While Stone comes across initially as a fairly slimy guy, it's Crowe who is the real amoral attorney. She recruits an Indian associate to act as a "prop" to gain the Khans' trust and then dumps Nasir's case the second things don't go her way.

** Crowe claims that Stone doesn't care about the case and will extort the Khans of money just to get Naz a plea deal, whereas she will fight for Naz free of charge out of the goodness of her heart. After, admittedly, getting the charges reduced, she tries to intimidate Naz into taking the plea deal without doing very much work on the case at all. After Naz refuses, she throws the case into an associate's lap and tells the Khans she's going to start charging them.

** Aditionally, Crowe's criticism of Stone as an ambulance chaser. Replace "ambulance" with "news story" and [ NotSoDifferent she's pretty much the same thing ].

** Alison Crowe is introduced smoothly delivering a victory speech to a media scrum and even pointing out the hypocrisy of a journalist asking her a question, establishing her as an capable and intelligent power attorney.

* {{Hypocrite}}: Stone's pitch to the Khans includes criticizing lawyers who churn through clients by copping quick pleas to maximize their profits. As we've seen, Stone is just this sort of attorney: trawling for low-effort cases and copping pleas.

* RunningGag: Stone being in the "right place, right time" to pick up Nasir as a client.

** Freddy states that members of the Nation of Islam at Riker's secretly resent Nasir because he was born a Muslim and didn't just convert for protection and better food like them.

''The Night Of'' is a 2016 miniseries airing on Creator/{{HBO}} and Creator/{{BBC}} Worldwide, based on the 2008 BBC series ''Series/CriminalJustice''.

The series stars Riz Ahmed as Nasir Khan, a sheltered Pakistani-American college kid who is accused of brutally murdering a young woman he had a one-night stand with. Creator/JohnTutorro co-stars as John Stone, an AmbulanceChaser who jumps at the chance to be his lawyer.

* AmbiguouslyBrown: People have a hard time with Nasir's race, mistaking him for Egyptian, Arab and other races. He's Pakistani.

* ManicPixieDreamGirl: Subverted. Andrea behaves a a lot like one, taking Nasir out of his shell and on a midnight adventure, but she's a damaged person and ends up getting murdered.
* PornStash: Nasir's mother searches his room and discovers a stack of ''Maxim'' magazines hidden in his closet. Nasir is so innocent that he doesn't even have real porn in his porn stash.

* RunningGag: Stone being in the "right place, right time" to pick up Nasir as a client.

* ManicPixieDreamGirl: Subverted. Andrea behaves a bit like one, taking Nasir on an midnight adventure, but she's clearly a damaged person and ends up getting murdered.
