* CallBack: The first four seasons all contain references to the movie or prior seasons of the show.
** Season 1 reveals what happened to the briefcase full of money from the movie: it was found by a man named Stavros Milos, who was broke at the time and had a young son. He used this money to start a chain of grocery stores which became extremely successful.
** Season 2 features the Solverson family from the first season again, as well as revealing Hanzee Dent [[spoiler: ended up becoming Fargo mob boss Moses Tripoli.]]
** Season 3 has the return of [[spoiler: Mr. Wrench]] as well as a brief nod to Stan Grossman from the movie.
** Season 4 features several call-backs to season 2, featuring Kansas City Mafia boss Joe Bulo and revealing that Loy Cannon's son Satchel [[spoiler: grew up to become Mike Milligan.]]
** The pattern is finally broken with Season 5, which features no characters from previous seasons or the film.

* MagicalRealism: The series is mostly a relatively realistic crime drama, but features various supernatural elements that are dimply accepted as part of the world. Supernatural beings like Ole Munch and Paul Marrane, UFOs, and ghosts are simply an accepted part of life.

Added DiffLines:

* HumanoidAbomination: In keeping with the recurring elements of MaybeMagicMaybeMundane and MagicalRealism, several seasons feature a seemingly ordinary character implied to be something ''more''.
** Lorne Malvo is ''possibly'' this, if the hints he's the Devil are true. Of course, it wouldn't be out of character for Malvo to have a DevilComplex, and it's quite possible he's simply a very skilled and effective assassin rather than some supernatural entity.
** Paul Marrane is heavily implied to be the Wandering Jew and possesses some kind of supernatural powers. Fortunately, [[CreepyGood he's a good guy]], but that doesn't mean he's [[GoodIsNotSoft soft]], as he [[spoiler:summons ghosts to take an [[NothingIsScarier unknown but likely unpleasant]] vengeance on Yuri Gurka]] (who, to be fair, [[AssholeVictim really deserved it.]])
** Ole Munch is an immortal sin eater who has been alive for hundreds of years, and has seemingly preserved his life through dark magic.
