Ragnar gets an arrow in the shoulder, and instead of just shrugging it off after pulling it out, it only makes things worse, because on top of the sword cut on his leg, he's also got another grievous wound to deal with, sapping his energy further. He's only able to get one last burst of energy to escape before it takes its toll on him. It takes a good length of time for him to recover from his injuries, showing that for all his badassery, he can still be debilitated with a well placed attack when he's not expecting it.
