* OpeningShoutOut: When Springfield Elementary School is shown letting out for the day, Bart rides his skateboard out the front door, just as he does in the full-length opening sequence, though this time he rides alongside a bunch of kids gleefully running out of the school.

* FreezeFrameBonus: Bart never actually solves the brain teaser. He just picks up Milhouse's answer and asks Martin if it's correct again. Martin doesn't notice.

* FunnyBackgroundEvent: As Grampa walks Lisa past the table where he got his haircut, Maggie can be seen in her high chair, reaching toward the scissors.

* TheLastOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers: All of Homer's relatives explain what they do for a living, whether they be legitimate forms of income (i.e. owner of a failed shrimp factory, a jug band manager) or not (i.e. stepping in front of cars so they can sue the drivers, and begging celebrities for money). The last guy just complains "My legs hurt".

* ForWantOfANail: If not for Lisa angsting over being unable to figure out a simple puzzle there wouldn't have been any conversation about the Simpson Gene.

* FutureLoser: Lisa fears she will become one from eating a candy bar: it causes her to have an ImagineSpot where she ends up having [[MassiveNumberedSiblings a bunch of children]], married to Ralph, becoming well over 300 pounds, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and speaking with a Southern accent.]][[note]]Much like with Bart in [[Recap/TheSimpsonsS7E7KingSizeHomer "King-Size Homer"]], who had the latter two happen to him in another ImagineSpot.[[/note]]

I removed the “Artistic Licence – Biology” point. The first part dealt with explaining how the Y chromosome works and then stating it would “definitely not be responsible for determining that the Simpson males are doomed to failure”. It doesn’t address the argument made in the episode; that a defective gene could be attached to the Y chromosome. While I certainly think a case could be made that the episode involved “Artistic Licence – Biology”, I do not think the current example explains how this is the case. The rest of the example seemed to be an unrelated point and suggested it was “proven the so-called Simpson gene is more attributed to constant head injuries and substance abuse”. While I accept this may be someone’s personal theory, it’s not canon and hasn’t been proven.

* ArtisticLicenseBiology: The Y chromosome's main function is the SRY gene, also known as the male determining gene, with the rest of the chromosome composed of repeating DNA segments. It wouldn't definitely ''not'' be responsible for determining that the Simpson males are doomed to failure...plus it also seems to be proven that the so-called "Simpson gene" seems to be more attributed to constant head injuries and substance abuse.

* CerebusRetcon: The episode puts a BlackComedy spin on the WomenAreWiser dynamic we've seen in the Simpson family up to this point with the family coming to believe it's written into the DNA, as evidenced by Homer and Bart starting off intelligent and gradually beginning to lose it at around age 8, which Abe claims happened to him as well. It's worth noting that this is never confirmed beyond the point of speculation based on the evidence, and other episodes would offer alternative explanations for why Homer and Bart are the way they are.

* OnlyTheLeadsGetAHappyEnding: The revelation that, while Simpson men hold to the trend, Simpson women tend to retain their intelligence into adulthood and find professional success comes as a huge relief...to ''Lisa.''
-->'''Bart:''' So wait a minute. This means I'm gonna be a failure?
-->'''Homer:''' Yes, son. A ''spectacular'' failure.
