Many young children can be afraid of the dark. However, mostly it's just due to their imagination. Such as in Cindy Brady's case, with the '''Lights Out'''.

It's nighttime, and everybody's sleeping in the Brady house. Except for little Cindy, who has had her eyes open the whole time. She then gets out of bed and turns on the light before going back to bed, annoying her older sisters, because she suddenly "can't sleep with the light off". Marcia simply turns the light off, to which Cindy turns it back on again. Next, Jan and Cindy turn the lights on and off, before Mike shows up. Cindy tells him she's scared.

So for that night, Mike and Carol allow her to sleep with them. So what is Cindy so afraid of? Apparently, one of her friends had a birthday party, where there was a magician act. The magician had put a lady into a big box and made her disappear, after which Cindy had ran away scared before the magician could make her reappear. Now, when Mike and Carol turn off the lights again, she suddenly has nightmares again.

And as it takes quite some time to get Cindy to sleep this night, tomorrow Mike comes home early for work, for he was unable to stay awake. Just as Peter comes home from school, telling him that he signed up for an old-time vaudeville show at his school, and he plans to do a magic act. While Mike is reluctant at first, he soon realizes that if they let Cindy see the magic acts, she wouldn't be so afraid. So Mike and Peter go out to the store and buy a few tricks.

Next, Peter is performing a few tricks to a test audience - Mike, Carol, Alice and Cindy. And then, Cindy becomes Peter's assistant.

Until Peter wants to try the disappearing act, and Cindy is afraid. Peter volunteers Bobby to prove her there's nothing to worry about... and makes Bobby disappear. Except that when he makes Bobby return, Bobby doesn't. This makes Cindy afraid again and she runs off. Then Mike comes home, and hears about what happened from Peter and Jan, just when Bobby suddenly reappears. Apparently, after getting out of the secret door, he snuck out from the back of the garage for a joke. Mike is not amused, and drags Bobby upstairs, where Cindy is shook up and comforted by Carol, to apologize. However, it has no effect, as Cindy suddenly decides to quit, suggesting that Jan could take her place, and that she'd like to sleep with the lights on again.

And next, when Peter and Jan are rehearsing, with Mike, Carol, Alice, Greg, Marcia and Bobby watching, Cindy suddenly decides to go to bed early.

Comes the day of the vaudeville show, when another boy is performing his act playing the accordion, just as Peter and Mike wait backstage for Carol to arrive with Jan. However, just then, Cindy is at home and takes a phone call from Jan, who calls from the nurse's office, having twisted her ankle in gym class. Now, at the talent show, it's Peter's turn... and he has no assistant. Just then, Alice and Cindy walk in, Cindy having felt sorry for Peter and decided to help him after all. So, Cindy goes into the closet and Peter makes her disappear. Then he makes her reappear... and Cindy is still there, safe and sound, wanting to do it again. And his magician act is a success.

Apparently, one of her friends had explains: She was at a friend's birthday party, party where there was a magician act. The magician magician's act, with the "disappearing lady" act as the highlight. Cindy had put a lady into a big box and only seen the part where the woman was made her to disappear, after which Cindy had and frightened by what she saw, and apparently ran away scared out of the room before the magician could make her reappear. Now, when Mike and woman was made to "reappear," which she says she did after Carol turn off tries to explain the lights again, she suddenly has nightmares again.

And as it takes quite some time to get
act's resolution. Her parents allow Cindy to sleep this with them for one night, tomorrow reassuring her there was nothing to be scared of even with the lights off, but Cindy won't go to sleep until being promised this will be a "lights on" night.

As it takes a while for Cindy to fall asleep, the next day
Mike comes home early for work, for he was unable from the office, struggling to stay awake. Just as Before he can take a much-needed nap, Peter comes home from school, telling him that home, announcing he had signed up for an old-time vaudeville show at his school, and that he plans to do a magic act. Peter wants to try the disappearing act, and "disappearing lady" act. Cindy is afraid. afraid, but Peter volunteers thinks that by showing her how it works -- the box having a hidden door, and then the cues to re-enter the door and "reappear" -- it might reassure her. Peter had already volunteered Bobby, who just wants to be a wiseguy and is clearly annoyed by having to help out. But he agrees, and the first half of the act goes well. When Peter tries the "reappear" half of the act, Bobby fails to prove her there's nothing to worry about... and makes return. At first, Peter (and Jan, who was also helping with part of the act) think that Bobby disappear. Except that just forgot his cue, but when it becomes clear he makes Bobby return, Bobby doesn't. This makes is being stubborn and doesn't want to "reappear," Cindy afraid again and she runs off. Then off in tears. When Mike comes home, and hears about what happened from Peter and Jan, just when Bobby suddenly reappears. Apparently, after getting out all of the secret door, a sudden "reappears." Everyone is clearly not amused by Bobby's idea of a joke (especially since it is presumed he snuck out from the back of the garage for a joke. ''knew'' that Cindy had recently been frightened by magic) and Mike is not amused, and drags Bobby upstairs, where inside to apologize to a shaken Cindy. While Cindy accepts the apology, she is shook up and comforted by Carol, to apologize. However, it has no effect, as Cindy suddenly decides to quit, suggesting still so shaken that she quits, and after volunteering Jan could to take her place, and announces that she'd like to sleep with the lights on again.

And next, when Peter and Jan are rehearsing, with Mike, Carol, Alice, Greg, Marcia and Bobby watching, Cindy suddenly decides to go to bed early.

Comes the day of the vaudeville show, when another boy is performing his accordion act playing (and boring the accordion, just as judges out of their minds), Mike and Peter and Mike wait backstage anxiously for Carol Jan to arrive with Jan. However, just then, show up. At home, Cindy is at home and takes a phone call from school -- it's Jan, who calls from the nurse's office, having twisted her ankle in gym class. Now, at the talent show, it's class and clearly is in no condition to perform. Peter tries gamely to show off some of his magic tricks and stall for time.

Just when it appears this panel of hard-to-please judges will scratch
Peter's turn... and he has no assistant. Just then, from the final lineup of acts, Alice and Cindy walk in, in. Cindy having felt sorry for realizes she had to face her fear, swallow it and help her big brother Peter and decided to help him after all. So, Cindy goes into in his time of need. And without even thinking about the closet and Peter makes her disappear. Then he makes her reappear... and Cindy is still there, safe and sound, wanting outcome of the "disappearing lady" act, she successfully gets through the act. In fact, the "disappearing lady" act was so much fun, she wants to do it again. And his magician act again ... and it is a success.
