* HaHaHaNo: A variation: When Patrick suggests that people are avoiding [=SpongeBob=] because of his voice, [=SpongeBob=] makes one of the loudest, longest and most annoying laughs yet, before going deadpan and saying "Good one, Patrick."

* ForWantOfANail: Patrick eating [=SpongeBob=]'s sundae thus giving him the bad breath (he "caught the ugly"), is what leads to [=SpongeBob=] smelling it when Patrick couldn't, allowing him to realize they're not ugly and their breath just stinks.

* AirQuotes: [=SpongeBob=] uses them when he tells Pearl that he's going to pretend to "fire you" for Mr. Krabs' benefit.

* SpringtimeForHitler: Downplayed -- as Pearl explains to [=SpongeBob=], she deliberately tried to make the restaurant awful so she could get fired because she didn't want to work during her summer vacation (but she didn't want to risk disappointing her dad by quitting). She breaks down in tears in front of Spongebob when it looks like the restaurant is a success. But it actually wasn't: the new teenage clientele was happy, but all the new alterations to the Krusty Krab as well as alienating the original customers was a big money loss for Mr. Krabs. Krabs wanted to fire Pearl but he didn't want to upset her.

* AnAesop:
** If you feel like someone is not doing a good job, be honest and tell them, even if they're your friend.
** Conversely, if you do not feel up to the task of something important, it's okay to voice your concerns.

* AnAesop:
** Check your hygiene (in this case, breath) before you leave your house or else you will unintentionally drive people away.
** Never assume the worst about yourself without proper evidence backing it up.
** There's power in pride.
** Telling stupid stories can often make a bad situation worse.
** Watch what you eat. Certain foods have strong odors.

* AccentUponTheWrongSyllable: Pearl changes the Krusty Krab's menu to provide salads as the main dish instead of Krabby Patties. [=SpongeBob=] sees this and wonders out loud, "What in the name of Davy Jones' locker is a SAL-lad?" Later in the episode, he remarks about how much the customers are enjoying their "suh-LADS".

* DisruptingTheMovie: [=SpongeBob=] hopes his "horrible ugliness" won't be a distraction to the other moviegoers, but it's actually his bad breath that distracts them.

After eating an ketchup, peanut, and onion sundae, [=SpongeBob=] becomes afflicted with bad breath, and is soon wondering why everyone is running away from him. Patrick suggests it's because he's ugly, which sends [=SpongeBob=] into a deep depression.

* TheNoseless: Patrick's lack of a nose is a plot point here, as he has no idea that [=SpongeBob=] has bad breath, which leads to the misunderstanding that people run away from him because he's ugly.

* EveryoneHasStandards: Eventualy, even [=SpongeBob=] can't handle the numerous changes Pearl makes to the Krusty Krab, and resolves to talk it out with Mr. Krabs before realizing the dilemmas both are going through.

* WaxingLyrical: [=SpongeBob=] tells Gary that he's "[[Music/LionelRichie easy like Sunday morning]]."

* PottyEmergency: A result of Patrick eating Spongebob's peanut-onion Sundae (emphasized by [[WackySoundEffect the sound of a car breaking down]] as he clutches his gut).

* IdiotBall: Apparently, the Bikini Bottomites have no excuse to not tell [=SpongeBob=] that his breath stinks.

** To make [=SpongeBob=] feel better about being ugly, Patrick tells him the story of JustForFun/TheUglyBarnacle. To say it doesn't help is a ''huge'' understatement.

* MirrorCrackingUgly: Patrick suggests "the reflection test" to see if [=SpongeBob=] is ugly or not. The mirror breaks, alright, but only because [[TheManInTheMirrorTalksBack the reflection broke it to get away from the smell.]]

* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: [=SpongeBob=] thinks everyone is avoiding him because of his ugliness (but actually his breath stinks) and is really saddened by it, to which Patrick tells him to be proud of being ugly and prompt him to chant from the top of his house "I'm ugly and I'm proud!" Squidward even lampshades it:

** A few minutes later, Patrick scares a guy off in the bathroom with his own breath. His response? "My hands aren't ''that'' dirty!"

** After everyone evacuates the movie theater due to [=SpongeBob=]'s rancid breath, Patrick's first instinct is to see if there's no line at the snack bar.

* AlliterativeTitle: Coincidentally both episode titles are alliterative.

* DefiantStrip: Pearl turns the Krusty Krab into a teenage paradise called the Kuddly Krab, and gives Mr. Krabs, [=SpongeBob=], and Squidward new uniforms to wear. While [=SpongeBob=] and Mr. Krabs both like the new uniforms, [[BadJobWorseUniform Squidward does not]], and when a sign for the Kuddly Krab gets put up, Squidward tries to knock it down. After Millie and Fred mistake Squidward for a lady when they ask him where they can get something to eat (believing that Mr. Krabs sold the Krusty Krab), Squidward quits out of frustration and rips his uniform off, leaving him naked. At this point, a police officer shows up and puts a ticket over Squidward's groin (which is odd, since [[HalfDressedCartoonAnimal Squidward normally doesn't wear pants anyway]]).

* ScreamsLikeALittleGirl: [=SpongeBob=] does his usual one when he sees the grill gone, and later lets out a banshee sounding shriek when he finds Mr. Krabs unconscious in his office (the same shriek would later be reused in "No Free Rides")

* SoProudOfYou: While she's not present to hear it, Mr. Krabs' response to hearing that Pearl took her firing well is to declare "That's me girl! Tough as nails, [[LikeFatherLikeSon just like her old man!]]"
