Tom and Dona host a focus group, looking for their impressions of Leslie as a candidate, while Ben and Leslie watch through one-way glass. One participant, named Derek, expresses his doubt that Leslie is someone he'd want to bowl with.

Ben and Leslie meet to discuss the results. Leslie is obsessed with the guy who didn't want to bowl with her. She researched him, including his bowling ability. Ben tells her the public sees her as elitist, but they need to see that she can have fun.

Jerry hosts a fundraising phone bank at April and Andy's house. Leslie's campaign staff participate in calling potential donors. Jerry offers a prize of two movie passes for the person who raises the most money. Chris is excited at the possibility of winning the tickets so he can go to the movies with Millicent. April, annoyed by the whole thing, decides to win the prize so she can take Chris' happiness away.

Leslie hosts a bowling night for potential voters. Ron, Ann, and Tom bowl together. Leslie meets with some of the voters in attendance, but when Derek arrives, having received an invitation, Leslie focuses all her attention on him, despite Ben's advice to meet with all the attendees. Leslie plans to lose to Derek on purpose and make a friend of him.

Ron is appalled at Tom's goofy, yet effective, way of bowling.

When Chris takes a break, he announces to the rest that he plans to ask Millicent to move in with him. Jerry asks him to take his break in the living room, and when Chris leaves the room, Jerry tells Donna, April, and Andy that Millicent plans to break up with Chris.

Tom is beating Ron at bowling. Ron crushes Tom's finger between two bowling balls, claiming it was an accident, though Tom thinks he did it on purpose.

After Leslie has lost to Derek, she asks him if he'll vote for her. He says he won't because he doesn't like her. Leslie yells at him and challenges him to another game, where she won't let him win. If she wins, she gets his vote.

Millicent arrives, and she and Chris take a stroll. April, having wished for Chris' happiness to go away, starts to feel bad. After Millicent breaks up with Chris, she calls her dad to tell him. Chris doesn't come back to the fundraising, and April wins the contest.

Derek calls Leslie a bitch, and Ben punches him. He apologizes, but Leslie thinks it was awesome. Unfortunately, the press was there and caught it on camera. A police officer warns Leslie that Derek might press charges against Ben.

Tom and Ron finish their bowling match, with Tom bowling one-handed due to his injury. Tom wins.

Next morning, Ben offers to resign after they see the story in the paper, but Leslie won't let him. Leslie holds a press conference. She apologizes on behalf of herself and Ben, but then she takes it back. She explains that Derek (who is also at the press conference) was drunk and acting like a jerk.

April visits Chris in his office. He is very depressed. She gives him the movie tickets, with an additional ticket, inviting him to the movies sometime with her and Andy.

A focus group watches the press conference, with several of them expressing a positive opinion.

After a focus group reveals a man named Derek who claims he won't vote for Leslie, stating that she doesn't seem like someone he would like to bowl with, an offended Leslie sets up a bowling night. She spends the evening trying to woo Derek, while Ben tries to convince her not to spend all her energy on one voter as some people just simply aren't going to like her. Ron, Ann, and Tom attend the bowling event and Ron is embarrassed by Tom's awkward bowling style, though it gets results.

The rest of the gang spends the evening at April and Andy's house, making fundraising calls for Leslie's campaign. Jerry offers up a prize of two movie tickets to the person who raises the most money. Chris loudly announces that he plans to win the tickets so he can take Millicent to the movies, while April dedicates herself to beating Chris because she finds his constant happiness annoying.

An angry Derek calls Leslie a "bitch", resulting in Ben rushing to Leslie's defense, punching Derek and knocking him to the ground. A smitten Leslie kisses Ben over a bloody Derek, of which a newspaper photographer takes a picture.

Chris, who is well in the fundraising lead, announces that he is going to ask Millicent to move in with him, but Jerry then privately reveals to everyone else that Millicent is actually planning to end the relationship; she later shows up and does so, leaving Chris heartbroken. April wins the tickets but feels guilty that her wish to see Chris sad came true. The next day, she buys a third ticket and offers a depressed Chris to join her and Andy at the movies, giving him a quick hug.

Leslie refuses to accept Ben's resignation over the punch and at a press conference meant to be an apology to Derek, she tells the reporters that she won't apologize because Derek was a jerk and Ben was right to defend her honor. At a focus group about the press conference, the participants give Leslie very favorable opinions.

Ron later returns to the bowling alley in disguise and tries out Tom's technique, bowling a perfect game. He tells the scorekeeper to erase it later.
