* BlackAndWhiteInsanity: Uther demonstrates a particular version of this when he condemns Tom to death for associating with an enemy of the kingdom when Tom genuinely didn't know Tauren was using magic until the last minute and never planned to forge weapons.

* TheBlacksmith: Tom

to:

* TheBlacksmith: TomTom is referred to as the finest one in the kingdom, which is why his forge was chosen for Tauren's experiments in alchemy.

* JerkassHasAPoint: Not necessarily jerkass, but Gaius makes a good point that Uther's job as king isn't to be liked, it's to protect Camelot and it's people. He may be ruthless in his obsession to rid the world of magic and certainly take it too far to the point he hurts innocents, but he has brought prosperity and peace to the kingdom while sincerely caring about the safety of his subjects. This is why Gaius insists that Uther is in fact a good king when Merlin asks.

to:

* AntiHero: TaurenTauren is opposed to Uther's prosecution of magic, but his methods cost an innocent man his life.

* KilledOffForReal: Tom

to:

* KilledOffForReal: TomTom, Gwen's father, although Arthur notes that he's made arrangements so that Gwen can keep her house despite the loss of her father's income.

* VetinariJobSecurity: Brought up when Merlin, aware of Morgana's plans with Tauren, asks Gaius if Uther is a good king. As Gaius observes, while Uther's methods may go too far at times, he isn't king to be liked but to protect the kingdom, and his methods have brought peace to Camelot, while Arthur currently lacks the experience and judgement necessary to become king himself.

* WrongGenreSavvy: Tauren thinks he's a brave freedom fighter. Morgana has other plans for him.

One GilligansCut later and Morgana is dragged into a prison cell by the guards and chained to the wall. From the door, Uther tells her that she will remain until she’s ready to apologise. Judging from Morgana’s accusations, she’s nowhere near ready, but still seems a little shocked when the door clangs shut, leaving her alone.

* CapuletCounterpart: GenderFlipped and eventually {{subverted}}. Morgana approaches Tauren to form an alliance, convinces him of her intention to assassinate Uther, and then changes her mind, stabbing Tauren in the back.

* DramaticallyMissingThePoint: Once Morgana sees Tom dead, she goes to confront Uther and spends the rest of the episode plotting against him, never once comforting Gwen for her loss. It's possible that she's subconsciously guilty that her actions led to Tom's death, and avoiding Gwen is her way of avoiding that guilt.
