Rory's schools' guidance councelor thinks Rory isn't social enough and the principal thinks Lorelai doesn't participate in enough activities. Their solutions consist of joining a clique (which turns out to be a secret sorority) and the Booster club, which ends with Lorelai hosting an event at the inn. It's a fashion show. Lorelai signs Emily up to model, which unbeknownst to her gets her automatically signed up for the mother/daugher team.

Rory accuses Lorelai of listening to Barry Manilow. Lorelai accuses Rory of having a Bryan Adams poster in her room for years. Monosyllabic Man strikes again when Luke pours their coffee and they attempt to make small talk. The accusations continue.

The next morning, Lorelai's car won't start because she used up the battery. She refuses to change her shoes because she'd have to change her outfit. Rory can't fit all her books in her backpack: A biography about Edna St Vincent Millay and a novel by Faulkner are bus books, which she needs two of to switch between, an essay collection by Gore Vidal is her lunch book, and a book of short stories by Eudora Welty which is probably just an extra book in case she runs out of things to read. She has to carry her French book.

At lunch, a woman who works at Chilton approaches Rory, startling her. They go to the woman's office and talk about how unsocial Rory is at school and how Chilton can't recommend loners to Harvard. When Rory tells her mother, Lorelai gets mad that Chilton is trying to stomp out her dauughter's individuality, and calls a meeting with headmaster Charleston. At the meeting she tries to set him straight about Rory's social life, but he talks over her and lets her know that her parent participation is subpar.

Later, Rory is upset that Lorelai didn't meet her after her Latin class like she was supposed to. When Lorelai tells her what happened, she wholeheartedly agrees that Lorelai shouldn't even do most of the things other Chilton moms do.

She goes to a table full of girls, makes a joke about the draft at her usual table being less forceful than the tornado in Literature/WizardOfOz. The girls let her sit down, and she learns that the leader of the group is Francine and the other girls have silly names, like Lemon, the girl sitting next to her. Her friends call her Lem. They want to know if Rory has a nickname, and Rory explains that Rory ''is'' a nickname, since her actual first name is Lorelai after her mother, in the same way sons are named for their fathers.
