->''"Have you heard of the vile maxim? 'All for ourselves and nothing for other people is the vile maxim of the masters of mankind.' You think a rich man wrote that?"''

to:

->''"Have you heard Gloria and Winnie find Ray dead at his apartment. Nikki is arrested at her motel room, as Meemo watches from a distance. At St. Cloud's police headquarters, Nikki is questioned by Chief Dammik, who suspects that she killed Ray in retaliation for his abuse. Nikki requests a lawyer. Winnie's supervisor orders her to return to traffic duty and asks Gloria, who is out of her jurisdiction, to leave. Gloria presents her facts before asking Winnie to tell Emmit about his brother and gauge his reaction.

Obviously distracted, Emmit arrives late for a dinner meeting with Ruby Goldfarb and Sy. Winnie finds Emmit and, although she doesn't mention how Ray died, Emmit suggests Nikki killed Ray. He and Sy leave, and a suspicious Winnie approaches Ruby. Emmit later asks Sy if he was working with Ray. Sy refutes this, dispelling Emmit's suspicions. As he leaves, he sees Varga inside Emmit's home; when he reaches home he sobs in his wife's arms. Varga asks Emmit how he feels; Emmit responds, "Free", but begins to cry.

An attempt is made on Nikki's life in her jail cell, but Gloria saves her. The uniformed assassin, Golem (DJ Qualls), makes a clean getaway. Nikki, thankful for Gloria's saving her life, tells her and Chief Dammik to follow
the vile maxim? 'All for ourselves money. Having violated parole, Nikki is put on a state prison bus and nothing for other people is seated next to a disheveled-looking Mr. Wrench (Russell Harvard). Yuri plants a ramp, causing the vile maxim of the masters of mankind.' You think a rich man wrote that?"''

bus to overturn, and he and two accomplices enter it.

The episode opens at Emmit’s house on Christmas Eve where Varga is opening the presents under the Christmas tree and inspecting their contents. At Ray’s, Gloria and Winnie inspect the house and find Ray lying in his own blood on the floor.

-->'''Gloria:''' Shit.

Nikki continues to nurse her wounds in the hotel when there’s a knock on the door. She takes a peek out the window and the police bust in, catching her right before she can climb out the window. Meemo watches from the parking lot as Moe loads her into the car, while Emmit is just now arriving at his dinner with Sy and Ruby Goldfarb.

Moe interviews Nikki at the St. Cloud Police Station and shows her a picture of Ray’s corpse. He tells her that a lawyer is basically pointless and that her best defense is a “tear-jerker” blaming Ray for beating her where people couldn’t see. He ends their exchange and leaves the picture with her, which she analyzes and notices the broken glass around Ray’s body.

The St. Cloud police chief informs Gloria and Winnie that their murder department is officially taking over the case. Gloria insists that she be allowed to interview Nikki, citing all the research she’s done into the case concerning Ray’s involvement in the deaths of Ennis Stussy and Maurice [=LeFay=]. Despite this, they’re both dismissed from the office, and in the brief period of time before Moe joins them outside, Gloria tells Winnie to find Emmit, inform him of Ray’s death, and pay close attention to his reaction. Gloria then proceeds to attempt to get into Nikki’s cell, but she’s not permitted for an interview without the proper form from the second floor.

Back at the Eden Valley Police Station and Public Library, Donny gets a vandalism call and locks the building up. Upon realizing he’s left his gun behind, however, he goes back to the door to find it already unlocked. Inside, Yuri waits in the library reading a book. Donny tells him that the library is closed, but Yuri grabs his weapon and aggressively insists that he isn’t there. He allows Donny to pick up his gun and leave, and he returns the Ennis Stussy investigation report back to the file drawer where he got it.

Meanwhile at dinner, Emmit is behaving particularly odd. He relates the passing of Gloria’s husband to Stella leaving him because of the sex tape, and starts describing the problems of being rich by saying that jealous deadbeats and losers make hard-workers out to be villains. Sy interrupts his monologue when he spies Winnie talking to the server. Emmit watches him walk over to her, exchange words, and then sadly motion him over. Once he’s joined them, she begins to tell him what happened to Ray.

-->'''Winnie:''' Mr. Stussy, your brother—
-->'''Emmit:''' I’ve been here since six.

He immediately blames Ray’s death on Nikki and repeats his alibi, and Sy walks him out. When they’ve gone, Winnie approaches Gloria for a few questions. Emmit and Sy sit in the Humvee for a minute outside Emmit’s house, and Sy assures him that he’ll take care of Ray’s burial and the situation with Ruby. Emmit begins accusing him of going behind his back and partnering with Ray, causing Sy to go on a monologue about the financial stupidity about any kind of arrangement. He assures Emmit that he can always trust in him, and Emmit slumps inside as Sy watches Varga staring at him from the upstairs window.

Varga joins Emmit sitting on the staircases next to a Christmas tree with perfectly wrapped presents underneath. Varga tries comforting Emmit with a rhyme his mother used to recite to him whenever he had nightmares, and Sy returns home to his wife, who notices that he’s crying.

-->'''Esther:''' Hun? For Pete’s sake, hun, what’s wrong?
-->'''Sy:''' The world. The world is wrong. It looks like my world… but everything’s different.

Gloria enters the upstairs office looking for the form she needs, but she’s told that since she’s not a St. Cloud officer, she’ll have to get her superior officer’s signature for another form before she’ll be granted the one she needs for an interview. Meanwhile, the camera light in Nikki’s cell goes off and an officer enters telling her to turn around and stick her hands through the bars so he can check her for contraband. When she’s resistant, he threatens her with a Taser gun and handcuffs her to the bars. He pulls out a syringe and tries injecting her, but Gloria appears and stops him at gunpoint. He’s able to knock her aside and run out of the room, and Moe and two St. Cloud officers run in and restrain her while she and Nikki try to explain what happened. Moe finds the syringe lying on the ground, and Gloria convinces them to check the security tape.

In the security room, the officers find that the tape stops right before the incident. Gloria states that with all the mysterious circumstances surrounding the case, they should at least be allowed to talk to Nikki. When Gloria tells her that she believes Emmit struck back against Ray and killed him when things started to escalate between them, but Nikki refutes that she doesn’t think Emmit was behind it.

-->'''Nikki:''' Maybe not the brother.
-->'''Gloria:''' Meaning?
-->'''Nikki:''' Follow the money. That’s all I’ll say.

Moe revokes Nikki’s probation and grants her protective custody, and while the officers leave, Gloria offers to save her a piece of pie from the holidays. She tells Nikki that in the days following Christmas, the two of them could sit down and talk about the life of Ray Stussy, to which Nikki responds by telling her that coconut cream is her favorite.

That night, Nikki is escorted by two St. Cloud officers onto the bus to the state penitentiary. She fills the seat in the back and glances at the man she shares it with, who a camera pan reveals to be [[Series/FargoSeasonOne Wes Wrench]]. The bus takes off, but somewhere along the ride, Yuri surfaces on the road and causes the driver to swerve. The whole bus capsizes, either killing its passengers or knocking them unconscious, and Yuri, wearing his wolf skin, begins to try and cut through the gate at the front.

!!Tropes:
* AmbiguousSituation: It's unlikely that the bus crash killed Nikki, as Yuri is still trying to get to her when the episode ends. The fate of its passengers, however, is still up in the air, particularly Mr. Wrench.
* TheBusCameBack: After Mr. Wrench escaped custody halfway through the first season, he ends up on the same bus as her four years later InUniverse.
* CaptainObvious: Moe Dammick has an odd moment while he's trying to explain Nikki's situation to her.
-->'''Moe:''' Mash a potato, know what you get? Mashed potatoes.
* FlatWhat:
** Donny gives one of these when Yuri tells him that he's left the police station.
** Sy gives one of these when he's accused by Emmit of partnering with Ray behind his back. When Emmit tries going on, Sy delivers a spite-fueled rant that puts their argument to bed.
* HeroicBSOD: Sy has one of these when he returns home to his wife.
* PetTheDog: The ruthless Yuri who has delighted in killing elders and beating women in previous episodes allows Donny to leave the police station with his life. This might have something to do with not wanting to make a mess at the police station of all places, but even so, viewers who were holding their breath sighed with relief when he walked to his car and drove away.
* ShoutOut: Nikki getting stopped from climbing out the window is portrayed in almost the exact same way Jerry is stopped in the original ''Film/{{Fargo}}'' movie.
* SoundtrackDissonance: The episode opens with a cheerful rendition of "The First Noel" played over Varga opening and inspecting Emmit's Christmas presents. It continues playing as the scene fades away to Ray's apartment, where his cold body is still lying on the floor in a pool of blood.
