* InternalReveal: While being interrogated by Haggar, Jeremiah pieces together that Lelouch and Zero are the same person after Haggar drops hints about it while sifting through his memories.
* LogicalWeakness: Mao's geass let's him read people's mind, but it only seems to work on living, sentient beings. Thus, it's totally useless against [[RobotBuddy Rover]].

* AdaptationalContextChange: Since Shirley's dad is still alive at this point in the story (or at least Shirley has all reason to assume he is), and thus she never used her sorrow at losing her dad as an excuse to kiss Lelouch, Mao's BreakingSpeech toward her instead mocks her new LoveTriangle with Lelouch and Rai, as well as the possibility her parents will be executed if she is discovered to be a paladin.
* AdaptationalJerkass: Due to the AdaptationalContextChange regarding his BreakingSpeech toward Shirley, Mao comes off as significantly more vindictive toward Shirley, and overall less sympathetic than he was in canon.
* BreakingSpeech: Mao delivers one first to Allura, and then to every Paladin except Suzaku (as Suzaku had learned a way to mask his thoughts to the mind-reader). Notably, each of these also counts as JerkassHasAPoint.
** For Allura, Mao calls her a {{Hypocrite}} for believing the best way to stop the Galra from destroying other innocent species is to [[GuiltFreeExterminationWar wipe them out first]], [[MythologyGag something an alternate universe version of herself did attempt and complete]].
** For Milly, he mocks how her mother tried to turn in Lelouch and Nunnally to the royal family and subtly implies even Milly had less than altruistic reasons for taking the young prince in.
** For Rivalz, Mao points out how [[BystanderSyndrome he regularly drove past the ghettoes after Lelouch's chess games but ignored the suffering happening within]].
** For Kallen, he implies that she hates her mother for putting up with Ms. Stadtfeld's abuses [[LoveMartyr just for Kallen and Naoto's sake]].
** For Shirley, Mao briefly indulges in a personal insult over how Mr. and Mrs. Fenette might be executed if Shirley was revealed as the Orange Paladin, before deciding to tear into the LoveTriangle Shirley has with Lelouch and Rai, wondering which heart she will choose to break.
** For Rai, Mao points out that when Rai injured his sister to prevent her from being sent to fight in the Galra' GladiatorGames, he might have done so badly enough that the Galra would've just executed her because she was useless as slave labor, and then mocks Rai over his lost memories, implying that Rai might not ''want''' to know who he was.
** Last but not least, Lelouch is subjected to a barrage of different {{Breaking Speech}}es, in part because the former prince has retorts for the first few.
*** Mao initially mocks Lelouch for all those he has killed as Zero. Lelouch has already come to terms with this.
*** Mao next tries to call Lelouch out on killing his own brother. Lelouch points out that Clovis had just as much blood on his hands as Lelouch, and that Lelouch views himself as better than the prince he was born as.
*** Mao then attempts to make a dig at how Zarkon was the Black Paladin and still holds a bond with Zenobia, and thus might have ConflictingLoyalties. Lelouch points out that said bond doesn't necessarily translate to loyalty, something Mao concedes. However....
*** Mao finally succeeds in getting underneath Lelouch's skin by implying that the exiled prince and Zarkon are NotSoDifferent, something Lelouch himself is aware of and extremely sensitive to.
