* InsaneTrollLogic: Spooge claims that since every ATM has a weakness of some kind, logically the manufacturer must have placed it on the bottom, since that's where it'd be hardest to access and exploit said weakness. His girlfriend, drugged out of her mind as she is, instantly points out how dumb this logic is, since weaknesses aren't usually intentionally designed into anything. Possibly subverted since the door does pop open after he spends a while tinkering with the bottom, but it's not clear if this is a direct result of said tinkering, or the door finally giving out due to repeated sledgehammer whacks combined with a sudden, sharp bump courtesy of it landing on Spooge's head.

* Foreshadowing: During a lesson on carbon, Walt recounts the story of the man who invented synthetic diamonds, H. Tracy Hall, and how he was rewarded for his breakthrough invention with a ten-dollar savings bond. Walt, similarly, made several breakthroughs for Grey Matters, but had sold his share of the company for pennies on the dollar after breaking up with Gretchen, as he would tell Jesse late in the final season.

At a high-end restaurant, Walt meets with Gretchen. Gretchen wants Walt to explain why he would lie about her and Elliot paying for his medical bills, but Walt remains evasive, apologizing for his lies and asking Gretchen to let him explain in his own time. The discussion becomes heated as Walt later accuses Gretchen and Elliot of having cut him out and made their fortunes off of his hard work, while Gretchen fires back that Walt had abandoned them and walked out on her without a word when they had visited her family one Fourth of July weekend. Gretchen is at a loss of words, save for how sorry she felt for Walt. Walt fires back with a simple reply, quiet and two words long, but vicious: "Fuck you." Gretchen, incredulous, can do naught but silently and hurriedly leave.

Combo, Skinny Pete, and Badger are doing well selling the blue meth... until Skinny Pete gets held up by a couple of strung out meth heads at knife point. Pete is forced to give them all the product he has on him.

The guy of the druggie couple that robbed Pete is known on the street, (by the EmbarrassingNickname of "Spooge") so Jesse is able to track them down to the guy's seemingly normal house. Inside Jesse finds a horrific scene of filth, dilapidation, and nastiness, complete with the couple's undernourished and mute son roaming around.

Jesse tries to take care of the kid while he waits for the couple to return home and surprise them. They eventually do come home, along with a little something from their latest heist; an ATM that they will try to open in order to get the money inside. (Despite the fact that they've been unable to open several other such [=ATMs=] before.) As they have already used or lost most of the meth and money they stole from Skinny Pete, the couple convince Jesse to wait around until they open the ATM and repay him from the cash inside.

Meanwhile, a shot of the store where they stole the ATM from shows a dead cashier, meaning that the police will be actively hunting them down and it's only a matter of time until they are found.

While Spooge alternates between trying to open the ATM and insulting his girlfriend, Jesse tries to distract their son and keep the kid thinking that nothing untoward is going on. Unfortunately, Jesse himself gets a little too distracted himself, and Spooge's girlfriend gets the drop on him, knocking Jesse out, then taking back the drugs as well as Jesse's gun.

Spooge goes back to trying to open the ATM, eventually tilting the machine on a 45 degree angle while he lies underneath it, trying to drill into it. Jesse comes to but pretends to still be unconscious, watching developments carefully. Spooge is still laying underneath the ATM trying to open it when he insults his girlfriend one time too many, repeatedly calling her a skank. She responds by pushing the ATM back upright, so it comes down on his head, complete with a SickeningCrunch. A shocked Jesse springs up and tries to stop this at the last minute, but is too late. The ATM, humorously, finally pops open, spilling out cash.

The girlfriend in the meantime is blind to everything except her own need to get high, which she promptly does and then passes out on the couch. Jesse grabs the cash from the ATM and tries to erase any trace of being there, then grabs the kid and leads him out of the house, trying to hide the grisly scene from the child. Outside, Jesse tries to comfort the kid, then leaves and calls the cops to go the house.

During the course of the day, Walt has a close call of his own. While Walt is back at the school teaching for the first time after his chemotherapy treatment, Gretchen Schwartz calls and leaves a good luck message for Walter, mentioning that she's in town and was concerned about the White family. Skyler, under the impression that the Schwartzes are paying for Walt's treatment, calls back to thank Gretchen and invite her over to the house. Gretchen is gobsmacked that Skyler thinks that Gretchen and Elliot are paying for Walt's treatment, but doesn't give Walt away and asks to come over.

Walt and Walter Jr. come home to find the two women having a friendly talk. Gretchen downplays both Skyler and Walter Junior's attempts to thank her, never confirming or denying anything that she's paying for Walt's treatment. Not long after Walt comes home she makes an excuse to leave, and Walt similarly makes up an excuse to go with her and have a talk about what happened. Gretchen sets Walt's mind at ease by saying she didn't reveal the truth to Skyler, but she is furious at Walt using her and Elliot to deceive his family. The talk becomes increasingly confrontational, then bitter and emotional, when the two get to how Walt and Gretchen's relationship ended, (Walt accusing her and Elliot of betraying him and cutting him out of the business, while Gretchen responds that Walt walked out on them and abandoned them both but especially her) and finally ends with Walt growling "Fuck you." and Gretchen walking out.

Later that night Gretchen calls the White household again, but she once again doesn't reveal the truth about Walt's lie, simply saying that she and Elliot will no longer be able to pay towards the treatment. Walt tries to spin things by telling Skyler that the 2008 recession hit Gretchen and Elliot's company hard, and that they're having money problems. Skyler isn't entirely convinced, but keeps her doubts to herself.

Back at home, Skyler receives a call from Gretchen, the conversation turning to the money that Gretchen and Elliot had supposedly given them to pay for Walt's medical bills. Walt meets Gretchen outside as she is preparing to open pull out, and asks her not to say anything to anyone until he can clear the air...

Back at Spooge's house, Jesse continues to watch infomercials with the boy until he hears screaming coming from outside: Spooge and his girlfriend are returning. Jesse places the boy back
in order his bedroom, then intercepts his parents in the kitchen, pistol-whipping Spooge and holding the two at gunpoint. From them, he manages to get back some of his meth, but no money. Spooge, however, explains that he has the money: he and his girlfriend had managed to steal an ATM. Described as a "victimless crime" by Spooge (an obvious lie; a man was killed lifting the machine), he plans to break open the ATM, so everyone can take the money inside.

Unfortunately, Jesse himself gets in spite of having boosted many [=ATMs=] before, Spooge never got a little too distracted himself, single one open, a fact sadly demonstrated by his futile attempts to break it open with a sledgehammer.

When Walt returns home, Skyler questions him about what has happened between him and Gretchen. Gretchen had called, hurriedly telling her that she and Elliot could no longer pay for Walt's medical bills, then refusing to answer any calls Skyler made to them, making her suspicious. Walt manages to assuage her suspicions by explaining that, while he had talked with Gretchen, he had learned that they are broke: they couldn't pay for his bills anymore because they no longer had the money to spare. Skyler finds this odd, since Gretchen still drove a nice car, to which Walt explains that she's just keeping up appearances.

Back at Spooge's house,
Spooge's girlfriend gets the drop on him, knocking knocks Jesse out, out when her son comes out of his room and distracts him, then taking back the drugs as well as takes Jesse's gun.

* WhatTheHellHero: Gretchen essentially says this to Walt after he arranges to meet with her alone in order to apologize for his lies and keep her quiet. Especially once it becomes increasingly clear that Walt is still very resentful of her and Elliot, and that this resentment played a key role in him refusing their unconditional offer of support.

Added DiffLines:

* ExactWords: Gretchen employs a lot of this to simultaneously avoid taking credit for Walt's treatment and deny that that she and Elliot have been doing it.

Added DiffLines:

* HiddenDepths: When Spooge complains about Jesse hitting him, he uses accurate medical terminology to describe the risk of a simple hit to the head turning into a concussion or subdural hematoma. David Ury, who portrayed him, has speculated that Spooge may have been a health care professional at one point before falling into drug use.

Added DiffLines:

* RashomonStyle: It soon becomes clear that Walt and Gretchen remember their breakup and Walt leaving Gray Matter very differently. Vince Gilligan once said that Gretchen's version is much closer to the truth, that Walt's pride had a lot of trouble dealing with how inferior he felt around Gretchen's wealthy and successful family, and he abruptly left and Gretchen never understood why.
* SpottingTheThread: Skyler is initially so taken aback by the news that the Schwartzes won't be "continuing" to pay for Walt's treatment that she doesn't voice any doubts about Walt's attempt to spin things. However, just before the end of their talk Skyler suddenly starts wondering why, if Gretchen and Elliot are having money problems as serious as Walt claims, Gretchen is still driving around a Bentley. Despite Walt's attempts to explain it away, it's clear that Skyler has doubts as of that moment, and those doubts will eventually drive her to get answers from Gretchen.
