* After nearly a whole game of [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments hilarious]], [[SugarWiki/SweetDreamsFuel adorable]], [[BlackComedy slightly dark stories]], 20th Anniversary has a rather eerie moment at the end of Dark Prince's storyline. He confronts Ecolo, who, after getting entertained with some Puyo, whispers something to him. [[SuddenSoundtrackStop The music cuts out all the while]], as Dark Prince smiles ominously [[EvilLaugh even chuckling a bit.]] Say hello to Puyo's BigBadDuumvirate, everyone. Then we later watch Dark Prince get possessed by Ecolo...

* In Madou ARS, we get some insight on [[DarkAndTroubledPast Schezo's backstory]]. At 14 years old, he finds himself on a school trip, being lured to a mirror. To make a long story short, he winds up fighting the spirit of [[EvilSorcerer Runelord]], and manages to defeat him, gaining the Dark Sword in the process. He escapes the mirror, and sees his future self in his reflection, as a Dark Mage. Despite rejecting the idea of dark power before, Schezo now seems perfectly happy to make that future a reality, [[CreepyChild even smiling eerily at the thought of it.]] The whole story implies that Schezo was (and still is) [[BrainwashedAndCrazy a puppet to Runelord]], which means that the guy [[StalkerWithoutACrush who tried to kill Arle]] ([[ItMakesSenseInContext even after losing his head]]), [[WouldHurtAChild chased down Sig for his arm]], and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking said more creepy things than one can count]]...'''[[FridgeHorror may not have even done it all of his own free will!]]'''

* Answering the above-question, ''Quest'' actually shows us more demons, such as the ''Devil'' and ''Hellspawn'' series. The Hellspawn series sticks out with some creepy details. Some stand-out examples include...

** Then there's the final one, [[GooGooGodlike Salome, a princess from Hell]], and an [[CreepyChild actual infant.]] She's accompanied and carried around by her faithful Tsukibito, a sentient, bat-shaped cradle with a face that'd give [[VideoGame/AHatInTime the Snatcher]] a run for his money in the eerie departmant [[PerpetualSmiler with that grin of theirs]], especially when [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/0/0b/Img505806_l.png it joins Salome in making a]] GameFace. She says she's come from Hell for the purpose of scouting. What for is anyone's guess.

** Wacht is cursed to hear buzzing noises whenever he falls asleep, forcing him awake. ''The poor man is stuck as an insomniac NervousWreck!'' Then there's his creepier Pitch-black version where he transcends normal insomnia and gains some dark sorcery that isn't truly elaborated upon...
** Then there's Crowlas, who weilds the [[{{Pride}} Staff of Arrogance]], which forces him to see everyone around him as crows, save for the cursed knights. Crows are often seen as a bad omen, so seeing them nonstop may drive you to believing the end is nigh. Granted, the [[NightmareRetardant horror is negated]] by the fact that [[{{Unishment}} he enjoys seeing everyone as crows.]]

** A familiar, but new face is also present in the form of [[WickedWitch Poison]] [[EvilDoppelganger Ringo]], a secretive girl with an uncanny resemblance to Ringo, but like Big Popoi, the description simply says she resembles her rather than them being the same person. Based on her dialogue schtick is [[TemptingApple offering apples to people, which are all but outright said to be poisoned.]] She also speaks off neutralizing poison with poison, making it sound like she [[WithholdingTheCure extorts people with the stuff.]] What's worse, while Big Popoi is an exception to Popoi's character, despite looking like Accord, [[PoisonousPerson Poison Ringo]] [[CanonCharacterAllAlong is an exception to]] [[AmbiguousInnocence Ringo herself...]]

** And Arle isn't the only one with an EvilDoppelganger, as both Schezo and Witch have ones too. Witch's doppel, named Dark Witch, sticks out for her appearance in ''"Comet Summoner"'', where she has [[AnotherSideAnotherStory her own secondary mode]], with a different ending than Witch's. What is that ending? [[TheBadGuyWins She beats Witch]], [[GrandTheftMe takes over her body]], and possibly '''[[DownerEnding leaves her counterpart to rot in the Night Dimension.]]''' Oh, and the [[AllThereInTheManual manual says]] she's a manifestation of [[FutureMeScaresMe Witch's future self.]] Let that all sink in...

This is [[CatsAreMean Evil Popoi]], also called the [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Prince]] [[SatanicArchetype of]] [[DarkIsEvil Darkness]], and while he may not do anything evil outside of fighting the girls, he certainly gives off a creepy vibe, especially considering [[NothingIsScarier his sudden appearance is never explained.]]
** Additionally, when Amitie confronts Popoi, she entered a castle that is ''pitch-black inside'' and [[TheDarknessGazesBack the only thing she could see are his eyes]]. That's an awfully spooky situation to be in when you're just looking for a lost cane.

[[MoodWhiplash It plays immediantly after Amitie's fight with Arle]], you move past the results screen to a scene of Amitie walking into a dark room, and not a second later than the scene starts, [[SurpriseCreepy she's stopped in her tracks by a giant pair of yellow, evil eyes]], [[EvilIsBigger each eye about the size of her head.]] Though she recollects herself pretty quickly, [[AudienceSurrogate Amitie is understandably shocked.]]
** Evil Popoi's sprites are [[NonStandardCharacterDesign pretty deranged compared to every other character in the game]], [[NightmareFace his face contorting in exaggerated expressions]], [[TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou many of which are looking at the player.]] His comeback in Quest especially makes him look more like a giant snake with arms than a puppet. As Raffina closes her eyes, the player gets to see what that reward is, a [[HyperspaceMallet mallet]] straight to Raffina's head, knocking her out and [[LaserGuidedAmnesia pounding the memories of Popoi's surprise heel-turn out of her mind.]] As Raffina falls unconscious, [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness Accord gets surprisingly crass]], [[IronicEcho echoing Raffina's catchphrase]] before saying she doesn't want the other kids learning about Popoi. He confronts Ecolo, [[NothingIsScarier who whispers something to him in response.]] [[SurpriseCreepy The music cuts out as Dark Prince smiles ominously]], [[EvilLaugh even chuckling a bit.]] [[BrainwashedAndCrazy Then we later learn Dark Prince is being influenced by Ecolo...]]
* Otomo's [[RebelPrince situation.]] [[ButtMonkey His misery is often played for laughs]], but think about it, Prince Salde is a kid, probably younger than Sig or Amitie even, running around trying to evade his future as king. [[AdultFear The idea of a kid running around unattended is probably enough to justify Otomo's worries]], and it doesn't help that Salde is constantly the butt of death jokes, getting EatenAlive twice and StrippedToTheBone if he loses a Puyo Battle. Suddenly, Otomo's constant concern feels quite justified...

* In most games, upon defeat, Ocean Prince will appear StrippedToTheBone, and ''[[GoOutWithASmile he's still smiling]]''. Even in the cutesy artstyle, it can be pretty jarring, regardless of how many times [[UnexplainedRecovery he shows up no worse for wear afterwards.]]
** Yu and Rei's defeat sprite is pretty disquieting too, as [[DeadHatShot you're treated to their ghost costumes lying empty on the ground, with paper talismans on their foreheads and halos above them.]] Whether the idea of these two being excercized from the world of the living is [[MercyKill a good thing]] or [[KilledOffForReal not is]] subjective, but you'd forgiven for being a bit unsettled upon seeing it for the first time. ''"Tetris 2"'' makes it worse by having them become briefly transparent, [[FadingAway as if they're fading from the realm of the living...]]
* Also in 20, [[ItMakesSenseInContext Lemres goes delirious from lack of sugar]], and runs into Feli. What does Feli think of this situation? She's uncomfortably happy with it, now that she can ''[[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything do whatever she wants with him.]]'' Lemres is understandably horrified.
** Feli in general is pretty eerie, a goth girl with a [[StalkerWithACrush VERY unnatural fixation on Lemres]], to the point of threatening anyone if they do so much as breathe in the same room as him. Also, [[RightHandAttackDog she has a giant hell-hound in the form of Baldanders.]] [[NightmareRetardant Thankfully]], [[BigFriendlyDog Baldanders is a lot friendlier than he looks.]]
*** That being said, Baldanders, especially in his [[TheBusCameBack comeback]] in ''Quest'', walks a fine line between [[CreepyCute endearingly creepy]] and [[AdorableAbomination offputting]], being a [[TheBigGuy giant beast that's considerably larger than most characters]], his [[MonsterModesty face covered by armor]] with only his [[SupernaturalGoldEyes yellow eyes]] and sometimes a [[MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily huge maw of large, sharp teeth.]] An another art-style a design like that would be a bit unsettling to see. In ''Quest'', [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/2/2a/Img200905_l.png his first card]] has him [[TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou approaching the screen, teeth sharper than ever.]]
*** [[CameraAbuse He also had a chain animation where he rushed at the screen]], [[{{Jumpscare}} giving you a good look at his chompers from the front.]] It makes him look more like a shark with legs and armor than a dog.
* [[FriendlyNeighborhoodVampire Akuma]] is a demonic teddy bear and curator of Primp Town's museum, and a bit of a MoodSwinger, going from calm and collected to [[SuddenlyShouting screaming at the top of his lungs]] with sharp teeth and angry eyes forming the most disturbing NightmareFace his art-style allows. Of course, it isn't too disturbing...until ''Quest'' [[TheBusCameBack brought him back]], with the [[ArtEvolution updated shading]] [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/f/fa/Img503006_l.png making him look more menacing]], [[CreepyDoll further resembling a possessed toy.]]
** Speaking of Akuma, his wish in ''15'' is that no demons could enter Primp Town. He has the town's safety in mind, but you have to wonder [[FridgeHorror what kind of demons are running around their world to justify that kind of wish.]] Maybe Demiserf? Maybe something else...
* Answering the above-question, ''Quest'' actually shows us more demons, such as the ''[[RockMeAsmodeus Devil]]'' and ''[[CreepyChild Hellspawn]]'' series. The Hellspawn series sticks out with some creepy details. Some stand-out examples include...

** [[PhantomThief Claude]], a fancy thief with a [[TheShadowKnows creepy shadow]] that's [[AFormYouAreComfortableWith implied to be his true form.]] That wouldn't be much of an issue if that shadow didn't look so [[NonStandardCharacterDesign out-of-place compared to the other characters]], [[FridgeHorror making you wonder what the]] [[IncrediblyLamePun hell]] [[UncannyValley he really looks like...]]
** [[TheQuietOne Bernard]] [[{{Moe}} certainly doesn't look scary]], but from his second transformation onward, he's accompanied by a living suitcase, with MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily.
** Then there's the final one, [[GooGooGodlike Salome]], a princess from Hell, and an [[CreepyChild actual infant.]] She's accompanied and carried around by her faithful Tsukibito, a sentient, bat-shaped cradle with a face that'd give [[VideoGame/AHatInTime the Snatcher]] a run for his money in the [[PerpetualSmiler eerie departmant]], especially when [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/0/0b/Img505806_l.png it joins Salome in making a]] GameFace. She says she's come from Hell for the purpose of scouting. What for is anyone's guess.
* [[TheHeartless Rafisol]] trying to [[GrandTheftMe take over Ally's body]] in Chronicle. The whole thing borders on MindRape, with Ally detailing in rather unnerving detail how [[AndIMustScream she can feel all the love leaving her heart.]]

* Squares in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, basically a guy created by Marle to be her friend, but her duties made it difficult to be with him all the time. What he developed into could best be described as a KnightTemplar with the [[PsychopathicManchild mentality of an actual infant]], who wants to bring order to the worlds of Puyo Puyo and Tetris, by merging them together, [[ApocalypseWow which could end them both.]]
** He also brainwashes Marle to carry out his plan, and the way she acts under his influence is...[[UncannyValley creepy]]. The way she talks about ''"fun"'', and sounds like she's constantly in pain or fighting his control, is rather jarring when you compare her to the rest of the [[SurpriseCreepy chipper, jovial voices in the game.]]

* ''Quest'' also gives us quite a lot of [[OriginalGeneration original characters]] as well, including the Accursed Knights, a group of warriors wielding [[EvilWeapon cursed weapons]] that grant amazing power...with [[{{Curse}} side-effects]] that range from annoying to [[AndIMustScream actually horrifying.]]
** [[TheStoic Hilda]], who's forced to [[TheHyena laugh uncontrollably]], and one of her sprites even shows her '''laughing with tears in her eyes...'''
** Wacht is cursed to hear buzzing noises whenever he falls asleep, forcing him awake. ''The poor man is stuck as an insomniac NervousWreck!''
** Then there's Crowlas, who weilds the [[{{Pride}} Staff of Arrogance]], which forces him to see everyone around him as crows, save for the cursed knights. Granted, the [[NightmareRetardant horror is negated]] by the fact that [[{{Unishment}} he enjoys seeing everyone as crows.]]
* Then there's Quest's returning characters, which can give longtime fans cause for alarm. [[DragonAscendant Demon]] [[HornsOfVillainy Servant]] is back, [[ArchEnemy still has a grudge against Rulue]], and aims to TakeOverTheWorld. No [[FreudianExcuse sympathetic motive]] or [[WellIntentionedExtremist good intention]], [[VileVillainSaccharineShow he's nothing short of a legit force of evil running around the Puyo Puyo world]]. Yeah, Madou had plenty of villains like that, like [[DarkIsEvil Dark Matter]], [[AngelicAbomination Phantom God]], [[EvilSorcerer Runelord]], [[StarterVillain Fudoushi]], [[EldritchAbomination Yoggus]], and even Demiserf's old boss, the [[VirginSacrifice Count]], but what makes Demiserf stand out from them? '''[[KarmaHoudini He]] [[HesBack came]] [[TheBusCameBack back]]...'''
** As mentioned above, [[ThereCanBeOnlyOne Doppelganger Arle]], [[AnimalisticAbomination Evil Popoi]], [[DemonicPossession Strange Klug]] are back, and while [[AmbiguouslyEvil Popoi's motives are as vague as ever]], the idea of Doppel and Strange Klug being able to carry out whatever they're planning is unsettling at the very least.
** A familiar, but new face is also present in the form of [[WickedWitch Poison]] [[EvilDoppelganger Ringo]], a secretive girl with an uncanny resemblance to Ringo, but like Big Popoi, the description simply says she resembles her rather than them being the same person. Based on her dialogue schtick is [[TemptingApple offering apples to people, which are all but outright said to be poisoned.]] She also speaks off neutralizing poison with poison, making it sound like she [[WithholdingTheCure extorts people with the stuff.]] [[FridgeHorror What's worse]], while Big Popoi is an exception to Popoi's character, despite looking like Accord, [[PoisonousPerson Poison Ringo]] [[CanonCharacterAllAlong is an exception to]] [[AmbiguousInnocence Ringo herself...]]

* Even if it was unintentional, Arle straight-up ''[[OffWithHisHead beheading]]'' Schezo in the PC-98 version of Madou Monogatari II is definitely this. This all happens [[https://twitter.com/zoniken514/status/1185734250177298432 on-screen]] and is about as gory as an 8-bit dungeon crawler can allow, with blood pouring down the front of his cloak. Granted [[AssholeVictim Schezo is a straight-up villain in this game]], but the [[SurpriseCreepy moment still comes out of nowhere]] and can blindside anyone familiar with only Puyo Puyo. The fact that [[OnlyAFleshWound he doesn’t particularly seem to actually be affected that much]], what with his decapitated head [[LosingYourHead still attacking the player]] as if nothing happened doesn't help.
** What happens next isn't any better, as Arle then has to fight Schezo's head. His [[OffWithHisHead decapitated]], floating head. If that's not enough, he then possesses this...[[EldritchAbomination thing]] called "[[AerithAndBob Test Body]]" (Pictured above), and makes a last-ditch effort to kill Arle! The whole scenario can be a [[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness pretty horrifying thing for a fan of Puyo Puyo, especially a Schezo/Arle shipper, to learn about...]]
** As you can see with Test Body's design, it's a multi-armed mass of flesh with a NightmareFace that stares right at you, and bits of its flesh seem to be stuck to the walls around it. It's also missing a good amount of flesh on one of its leg. [[NothingIsScarier Whatever the hell this thing is, it wasn't made through natural means.]] ''[[MakerOfMonsters It's entirely possible Schezo made that thing himself!]]''
** [[SchmuckBait Don't think Test Body is jarring enough?]] It's been speculated that Schezo, after taking people's powers, [[FedToTheBeast feeds them to this thing!]] [[SurpriseCreepy Dear heavens alive, Schezo!]]
** And Schezo isn't even the only enemy that can get brutally decapitated in that game. Meet [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/2/26/Dullahammadou2.png Dullahan]], who takes the headless knight depiction in a more violent and bloody direction.

He hunts down [[StalkerWithoutACrush Arle]] and [[WouldHurtAChild Sig]] in hopes of taking their power, [[BodyHorror and if he still]] [[AndIMustScream does the stuff]] [[FedToTheBeast he did back then]] [[AndThenJohnWasAZombie to his victims]], [[FunnyAneurysmMoment it makes his]] [[BewareTheSillyOnes efforts a lot scarier...]]
* If you're wondering what happens to the poor victims that get drained, Arle encounters one unfortunate victim in the Game Gear version, which can only be described as a [[https://i.imgur.com/x0CWWms.png gray-skinned rotting corpse]] with no discernable features other than a gaping mouth and eye holes. Arle's rightfully scared of it not because it's a dead victim, but because she's next if she doesn't get out of here.
* [[EvilTwin Doppelganger]] [[ThereCanBeOnlyOne Arle]] is heavily implied to be a half of the legendary sorceress [[PosthumousCharacter Lilith]] from dubiously canon ''Madou Monogatari Chronology'' and ''Shin Madou Monogatari'' novels, with Arle being the other half. According to the early plot of the Gameboy version of ''Puyo Puyo~n'', before it's changed in the final release, the Doppel was driven mad from years of isolation, and now wants to KillAndReplace Arle, even [[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainwashing]] [[HijackingCthulhu the Dark Prince]] and [[AndYourLittleDogToo kidnapping Carbuncle]] to lure her into a trap.
** Even worse? [[CessationOfExistence She fades from existence]] [[AlasPoorVillain upon defeat]]. But then, years later, Puyo Puyo Quest [[TheBusCameBack brings her back]], and [[FridgeHorror you have to wonder if she's still out for Arle's life...]]

* In Madou ARS, we get some insight on [[DarkAndTroubledPast Schezo's backstory]]. At 14 years old, he finds himself on a school trip, being lured to a mirror. To make a long story short, he winds up fighting the spirit of [[EvilSorcerer Runelord]], and manages to defeat him, gaining the Dark Sword in the process. He escapes the mirror, and sees his future self in his reflection, as a Dark Mage. Despite rejecting the idea of dark power before, Schezo now seems perfectly happy to make that future a reality, [[CreepyChild even smiling eerily at the thought of it.]] The whole story implies that Schezo was (and still is) [[BrainwashedAndCrazy a puppet to Runelord]], which means that the guy [[StalkerWithoutACrush who tried to kill Arle]] ([[ItMakesSenseInContext even after losing his head]]), [[WouldHurtAChild chased down Sig for his arm]], and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking made numerous]] [[MemeticMolester creepy innuendos]]...'''[[FridgeHorror may not have even done it all of his own free will!]]'''
** The implication that Schezo is Runelord's thrall actually makes the aformentioned decapitation even worse. While it could be chalked up to EarlyInstallmentWeirdness, the fact that Schezo is [[Really700YearsOld centuries old]], as well as [[OnlyAFleshWound perfectly able]] and [[DefiantToTheEnd willing]] to try and kill Arle, even possessing a fleshy abomination he had in his dungeon to do it, then [[UnexplainedRecovery shows up in later games no worse for wear]], implies that ''[[GreaterScopeVillain Runelord]] [[AndIMustScream won't even let]] [[FateWorseThanDeath Schezo die in peace.]]''
** And it's not just Schezo stuck like this, [[TheHero Ragnus]] is the one who defeated Runelord, [[ILetGwenStacyDie who killed Ragnus' girlfriend Patty]]. [[Really700YearsOld Now Ragnus is even older than Schezo]], [[ForgottenFallenFriend has no memories of Patty]], and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking is cursed to de-age if he stops fighting]]. [[DyingCurse Do t]][[TheBadGuyWins he math.]]

* [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/b/b1/Darkmatter.gif Dark Matter]], an evil mage once defeated by [[AbsurdlyYouthfulMother Witch's grandmother, Wish]], is pretty damn creepy to look at, [[UpToEleven even by Madou's standards.]] A giant monstrous figure in dark clothing with one [[RedEyesTakeWarning red eye]], and two pairs of arms, one skeletal, and the other made of mummy-wrappings. Oh, and he's possessing Wish. [[ThisIsGonnaSuck Good luck, Schezo, you'll need it...]]

* [[DarkIsEvil If Dark Matter didn't bother you enough]], here we have the [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/0/06/Phgod.gif Phantom God]]. Note the [[UncannyValley eerily detailed hands]] and [[EyesDoNotBelongThere eyes that seem to be bursting from the forehead.]] Oh, and that's not the only form it gets. It gets [[https://i.imgur.com/ZpUuC9v.png a nightmarish visage]] when it TurnsRed. It's almost as if the skin on its face got flayed off...

Yes, by all accounts, [[GoofySuit it just looks like Accord in a Popoi costume]], but the description and his/her/their dialogue [[InsistentTerminology insists that it's Popoi]] and [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial not Accord.]] Either Popoi is capable of taking on a humanoid form ([[PaperThinDisguise Albiet one dressed as him]]), or Accord has a weird sense of humor.
