* TheBadGuysAreCops: The police in the series is incredibly corrupt, as seen when Kurokochi himself appears to be the most benign compared to the conspiracies and unofficial hitmen that come from the police. Sawatari reveals the existence of the Sakura Council, a covert group within the police tasked with dealing with anything susceptible of tarnishing the reputation of the police through illegal ways, mostly murder.

* BeneathTheMask: Beneath his self-assured persona, Kurokôchi hides a great deal of self-loathing. Kurokochi also uses his reputation as a DirtyCop to hide his real investigations to his colleagues whom he doesn't trust.

* BlackmailIsSuchAnUglyWord: Kurokochi usually presents his bribes as preemptive gifts to himself so that he doesn't leak a secret. All politicians are savvy enough to see it as bribe but they care too much about their reputation and hand out the money all the same.
* BombThrowingAnarchists: One of Kyoji Torio's main skills. Having been taught how to make bombs in his youth by extremists, he's refined his skill to hide bombs in the most inconspicuous places with complex triggers. Torio is notably responsible for a police station bombing. [[spoiler:Moreover, because Torio turns one of Sakuragi's clocks into a bomb, he and Kurokochi manages to kill the old man after Torio's death]].

* TheChessmaster: Kurokôchi who can manipulate everyone around him thanks to his ObfuscatingStupidity and connections to politicians and criminals alike The only people who are able to match him are Sawatari, the extremely influential former governor of Kanagawa Prefecture who has many more politicians and government officials in his pockets and international criminal connections. For instance: Kurokochi patiently waits for the elections and leaks the murder accusations while pressuring the politicians in his pockets to let a popular and honest politician run for governor, leaving Sawatari no chance to stay in office and leading to his arrest. However, Sawatari also uses his many connections to the police and other judicial bodies to erase the proofs of his murders and manipulates the Sakura Council into ordering a hit on Kurokochi.
* ColorMotif: Many characters have names that allude to colors, beginning with Kurokochi whose name has the character for "black". The members of the General Council of the National Police Agency all refer to a different color: Akana is red, Aonuma blue, Koya is navy blue, Meguro is black and Shirasu white. Moreover, all chapters allude to colors in their titles.

* CoolMask: The unknown Dodaijin men who enter in contact with Kurokochi and warn him about various threats.

* FemaleFlatfootAndSnarkyGuy: Subverted. After the Susanoo case, Kurokochi is paired with the young and seemingly upbeat Yume Asaki, a freshly arriver police officer. However, Yume reveals that she's actually a real piece of work who manhandles sexual predators and is not without her own instincts as policewoman, impressing Kurokochi who realizes that she perhaps is even more unusual than him.

* GovernmentConspiracy: One of Kurokochi and Seike's worst enemies is the group known as "Susanoo's Cherry Tree", a far-right nebulous organization of government officials who are very powerful and bent on turning Japan back into a military superpower. Susanoo's Cherry Tree originates from scientists and military officers who worked for Imperial Japan during World War II and evaded judgement because they made themselves useful to the Americans. They are revealed to have played a part in the fight against communism in Asia, and their current goal is to engineer terrorist attacks and recreate the right climate for massive remilitarization of the country.

* RevisitingTheColdCase: While Seike and Kurokochi officially investigate recent crimes, it often leads them to revisit famous criminal cases of post-war Japan that happened decades ago, sometimes with only one elderly witness to interrogate. It's because said cases have a link to their current cases and will help solve what the current culprit is doing.

* SwordCane: Torio has an umbrella whose shaft hides a sword. He thus comes armed in all situations and always takes enemies by surprise when he unsheathes it. Kurokochi is notably crippled by the sword and Torio then uses the sword to kill one of Sakuragi's henchmen.

* InTheBlood: Shingo follows his father's footsteps as a policeman trying to uphold justice.

* BadassGrandpa: Hideo Takahashi [[spoiler: aka Momotaro]], a veteran of [[spoiler: UsefulNotes/TheVietnamWar]] able to take on [[spoiler: his assassin disciples]] at their prime while being way over 50.

* FarEastAsianTerrorists: The 400 Blows are a small group of far-left Japanese terrorists that were created in the 70s by communist sympathizers.

One night, the representative of the majority at the prefectural assembly Bungo Gôda has murdered a prostitute named Rina Akamatsu, and calls Kurokôchi to fix the crime scene, at a price. The next day, Seike is assigned to the murder and is teamed up with Kurokôchi to help solve the case, but also watch him for any infraction. Soon, Seike discovers that behind the crooked cop persona, Kurokôchi is using his influence to solve crimes whose culprits are beyond the power of the police, notably Kazunari Sawatari, Kanagawa's Governor who controls the Police Prefecture. To bring Sawatari to justice, Kurokôchi makes use of his long experience in the police, his keen investigative skills, and his willingness to hit even lower than the dirtiest of politicians. Seeing this, Seike chooses to brush Kurokôchi's bribes under the rug and cooperates with him in his cases.

As the cases involve more and more powerful officials, Kurokôchi and Seike are embroiled in even more complex and dangerous crimes involving multiple [[GovernmentConspiracy Government Conspiracies]] and have to dig up the secrets of the Japanese government.
