* JumpScare: Happens in-universe when Mitsuboshi is out in the night and some women startle him. He gets scared shitless due to his mental trauma from Princess Imperial's manager's abuse. Shortly after that he's seen obsessing about a missing person poster of Shio still in the dead of the night when suddenly Satou creeps up on him from behind with genuinely disturbing look in her eyes and with intent to blackmail him out of her deal.

At the end of chapter 17 it is revealed, that the true reason was that Shouko may also get infatuated with Shio and there would be another "obstacle" in his path.

* {{Yandere}}: Not only is Satou perfectly willing to murder people in order to keep Shio to herself, [[spoiler:including the neighbor whose apartment she and Shio currently live in (though it should be mentioned that said neighbor tried to strangle Shio over his own obsession with Satou, and Satou only killed him because of that)]]. No to mention that there are several other characters who exhibit obsessive or excessively controlling behavior.

* BrutalHonesty: In 13th chapter Shouko bluntly asks Satou "why does she [[PrecisionFStrike fuck]] so many guys". Yeah, she used that word.

* HateSink: In a series full of psychotic characters, these two make even PsychoLesbian [[VillainProtagonist Satou]] look like [[AntiVillain a saint in comparison]].

** The world itself is really not that great. People can seemingly commit crimes arranging from blackmail to kidnapping to rape or murder and remain virtually unaccountable as long as they can cover it up or nobody reports them to the police. Law enforcement is also somehow incompetent enough to be easily neutralized by tricking the informant into telling them to swat an insane woman. It tells that the most sympathetic antagonist in the manga by a significant degree is Satou, also the actual BigBad. Complex and shrewd as she is, she never goes to the level of low that some side characters do.

** The world itself is really not that great. It tells that the most sympathetic antagonist in the manga by a significant degree is Satou, also the actual BigBad, complex and shrewd as she is, never goes to the level of low the side characters do.

Law enforcement is also somehow incompetent enough to be easily neutralized by tricking the informant into telling them to swat an insane woman. The reason why Satou thrives in a society like that is because she knows fully she could do literally anything as long as she could get away with it, and exploits this to its fullest potential.

* TheShutIn: Shio is often left alone for most of the day because of Satou having to go out of the apartment to attend school and go to work so she can earn money to support them. She is perfectly capable of leaving the apartment, but does not do so due to Satou telling her that the outside world is dangerous. Even to the point where she's asked not to open the balcony door and step outside, likely due to Satou wanting to prevent Shio from being seen by anyone, since she knows someone is looking for Shio. [[spoiler:Though Shio later loses the ability to leave the apartment due to Satou installing a lock on the outside of the door to prevent her from leaving under her own power.]]

** [[spoiler: Satou's teacher, Daichi Kitaumekawa, openly gets aroused when Satou corners him, stamps on his crotch, and threatens to expose his true perverted nature - though he is seemingly more of a ''sadomasochist'' - as is later shown when he is brought to the point of climax by the thought of having exposing Satou's concealed murder in her apartment.]]

* BeautyEqualsGoodness: Averted. Even downright villainous characters like Kitaumekawa, the two park thugs and Asahi's dad aren't stereotypically ugly. It really shows that ''anyone'' can be a psychopath.

* WhereAreTheyNowEpilogue: In July 22, 2022, volume 11, also titled "Extra Life" has been released, containing bonus content not featured in the main manga. There's an alternate continuity chapter, some bonus scenes, and these.

* DepravedBisexual: It's...really hard to discern Satou's true orientation. She's had mindless sex with quite a few boys, but her obession/love for Shio is seemingly very romantic, although not necessarily sexual. Satou is also quite willing to [[PragmaticPansexuality seduce other girls as a mean to an end]], as she does to her coworker.

* TheChainOfHarm: A ''lot'' of the characters have a FreudianExcuse to explain their behavior, but their suffering abuse leads them to pass that abuse on, intentionally or no.

* DownerEnding: If your name is Asahi Kobe and Taiyou Mitsuboshi, then the story is essentially this. Satou [[spoiler:sacrificed her life to protect Shio, and there's no obstacles left for Asahi to have a timely sibling reunion, right? ''Wrong''! Shio rejects him in favor of Satou and decides to live for herself, cementing him as the loser who lost everyone who cared about him, since Satou already killed Shouko beforehand. 8 years later, he's a traumatized wreck wandering the streets.]] Mitsuboshi's fate is even worse, since [[spoiler:being raped a second time was the final straw that degenerated him into a wreck beyond saving.]] Ostensibly though, [[spoiler:Satou and Shio still get a BittersweetEnding -- Satou gets the last laugh by staving Shio out of Asahi's hands and proves herself to be genuinely capable of giving Shio a happy, independent life as a 16-year old girl, though if Satou's death didn't make her mentally unstable, being forced to live like the possession of a mentally unstable groomer in all-but-name definitely did her in.]]

In truth, she is a {{narcissist}}ic AttentionWhore who becomes envious of Satou for being well-received by her co-workers. When Taiyou Mitsuboshi, a teen boy under her employ, asks Satou out, the manager's ego is so bruised that she proceeds to kidnap him, lock in in a closet for a whole week, and [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil rape him]] repeatedly throughout, directly leading to Taiyou's SanitySlippage and [[FaceHeelTurn turn to darkness]]. She also orders her employees to sabotage Satou's work to get back at her for daring to catch Taiyou's attention. Even after [[spoiler:Satou's [[AlasPoorVillain tragic death]], the Manager [[KarmaHoudini seemingly vanishes from view after being confronted with no closure whatsoever]].]] A BadBoss and remorseless [[PedoHunt child molester]], the Manager irreversibly ruins the life of a young boy in a feeble attempt to maintain power.
** [[spoiler:Shio and Asahi's father]] is the GreaterScopeVillain and a truly nightmarish [[AbusiveParents parental abuser]]. [[spoiler:An [[TheAlcoholic alcoholic]], he spares no love for his wife Yuuna and children, beating them frequently and using them to fuel his unhealthy habits. A flashback would later reveal that he also [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil raped his future wife]] because [[DisproportionateRetribution she accidentally pushed him]], celebrated the death of his own father because it left him with a big inheritance, [[ParentalAbandonment left his wife and son]], and only came back after spending all his money. It is no wonder that Yuuna ran away with Shio, and Asahi [[AndThereWasMuchRejoicing rejoiced when he died]]]]. He undoubtedly deserves to be called a demon by Asahi and the only redeeming quality he has is [[spoiler:[[PosthumousCharacter nobody has to deal with him in the present day]]]].

* EvilVersusEvil: Satou, the resident VillainProtagonist, often has to deal with people whose minds are just as twisted as her own, if not more.

* DownerEnding: Satou and Shio [[spoiler:are caught in the fire Satou's aunt set and decide to commit lover's suicide, but while falling Satou realizes true love and shields Shio's body with her own, sacrificing her life in the process. Asahi is finally reunited with Shio, but Shio rejects him in favor of Satou and decides to live for herself, keeping Satou's love and their "Happy Sugar Life" in her heart forever. While this ensures Shio will never experience a normal life, it's the closest thing to a HappyEnding anyone gets in the anime, if only because Shio is satisfied with the disturbing and unhealthy life she had with Satou, and Satou still gets the last laugh by potentially creating a "successor". Meanwhile, Shouko is dead, Mitsuboshi is left a broken mess after being raped a second time, Kitaumekawa and Satou's aunt is arrested, Yunna is left a broken mess ''and'' is likely going to be arrested for murdering her husband, and Asahi has lost everyone he cares about in one way or another.]]

* {{Lunacy}}: Shio is explicitly compared to the moon by Asahi, and a later spread shows a picture of her while also describing lunacy as people being driven mad by the moon's light. Shio drives a number of characters, namely Satou, Mitsuboshi and Asahi, to commit deranged or desperate acts, the most twisted of which almost always happen at night. Night is also when Satou always comes home to Shio...

** In a more emotional abuse-based version of this, [[spoiler:it is abundantly clear that Satou did NOT grow up in a good household while living with her aunt. Living in a disgustingly filthy apartment constantly filled with trash, and presumably people walking in and out to have sex and abuse her aunt. All while said aunt continuously neglected her and taught her a twisted version of love that is no better than abuse. All in all it's little wonder Satou grew up the way she did.]]
