* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Often how Shio is portrayed, and how she is viewed by other characters.

* HopeSpot: When [[spoiler:Shouko]] confronted Satou, there was still a chance Satou would trust her and let her live. [[spoiler: And then came the knife...]]

* HopeSpot: After [[spoiler:Shoko]] confronted Satou, there might have been a chance for her to live. [[spoiler: And then came the knife...]]

* YourCheatingHeart: Satou's teacher, who apparently consistently tries to hit on his students a lot, despite having a wife and young daughter. Satou uses this fact against him, as she knows that despite his cheating, he doesn't want to lose his family or take the blow to the reputation that would come if he were found out.

* WhamShot: After seeing Satou talk so much about how she's found her beloved, and how she's working so hard for them to give them a good life together, she returns home and greets her beloved waiting for her. Then we see that her 'beloved' is a small girl.
** Then, after the reveal that Satou's 'beloved' is Shio, a child, we see her walking by a lamp post. With a missing person flyer posted on it with Shio's face.

* VillainProtagonist: Make no mistake, our "hero" here ''is'' holding a child captive in her apartment, though what makes her able to be rooted for is that most other characters who oppose her are more twisted in morality. It also doesn't hurt Satou's case that despite her madness, she's the only character introduced thus far who has demonstrated they can adequately care for Shio, even including Asahi. Ultimately, what the audience comes to value most of all is Shio's well-being due to her adorableness, innocence, and tragic past, and until the story progresses further, Satou can be tolerated for Shio's sake.

* AbductionIsLove: Satou basically picks Shio up off the street and whisks her off home with her, then proceeds to isolate her in an apartment by telling her the outside world is dangerous and later physically locking her in. She knows full well that there are missing person posters everywhere for her, and knows who's looking for her. But she refuses to even consider letting her go.

** In a more emotional abuse based version of this, it is abundantly clear that Satou did NOT grow up in a good household while living with her aunt. Living in a disgustingly filthy apartment constantly filled with trash, and presumably people walking in and out to have sex and abuse her aunt. All while said aunt continuously neglected her and taught her a twisted version of love that is no better than abuse. All in all it's little wonder Satou grew up the way she did.

* SocialServicesDoesNotExist: Clearly they do not if Satou was allowed to live with her aunt since presumably early childhood after the deaths of her parents. With said aunt displaying signs of being neglectful, keeping a positively filthy house, and exposing her from a young age to her sexual deviancy in the form of her insane masochism, among other things. Even the police who eventually come to visit are just there because they received a complaint of a bad smell from the apartment, and just told her to clean out her room full of garbage. Doing nothing about the wellbeing of the teenage girl who lives there with her.

* TooKinkyToTorture: Satou's aunt openly ''invites'' a police officer to slap and abuse her without care, because she simply sees such things as part of her twisted version of "love".

* AbusiveParents: Asahi's dad. To put it into perspective, he once ''tore off his son's finger nails'' just to see how long he could endure it. And then made him get liquor afterwords. It's only fortunate that the asshole died of alcohol poisoning later, but it took five years after his sister and his mom died.

* AmbiguousDisorder: Shio displays some potential signs of this. With symptoms ranging from dizzy spells and intense bouts of fear and anxiety that leave her curled up holding her head on the ground, to hallucinations of her mother with her face scribbled out speaking to her. It's uncertain at this point what her actual condition might be at this point, though PTSD and such are potentially on the table.
* AntiVillain: Yes Satou is a killer (and possible pedophile) with practically ''zero morals'', but she channels those into protecting Shio, and is rarely the instigator, with most of the people she targets being far worse then herself.
* BlackAndGrayMorality: A good number of the characters in this manga operate on this capacity. With only a few being anything close to what one would describe as moral to a normal person.
* BlindObedience: Shio displays this time and time again to Satou. Believing her entirely with no room for doubt in her mind that she has anything but her best interests at heart. Her age may have a lot to do with it.
* DevotedToYou: Shio, despite being a young child, has a positively uncanny ability to cause several people to become intensely devoted to finding, acquiring, or just being near her. Doing anything possible to keep her close and make her happy.
* DepravedBiSexual: It's...really hard to discern Satou's true orientation. She's had mindless sex with quite a few boys, but her obession/love for Shio is seemingly very romantic, if not quite sexual. Satou is also quite willing to seduce other girls as a mean to an end, as she does to her coworker.
* DomesticAbuse: Asahi and Shio's father was shown to be incredibly abusive towards his family, being an alcoholic and incredibly ruthless in his treatment of his wife and young children. Especially after Shio and their mother took them away from him, when we see him physically abusing Asahi and forcing him to get him alcohol to feed his habit. It's really no wonder that Asahi is so overjoyed when he finally died.

* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale: Actually averted. When Mitsuboshi is kidnapped and molested (and quite possibly more) by the female manager of the shop he and Satou worked at for a time, it's shown that the experience has greatly traumatized him. He spent a good deal of time at home after this, and has become terrified of older women to the point of feeling extremely ill whenever one so much as touches him (though girls the same age as him don't bother him as much). [[spoiler: This eventually becomes a driving force for him in his after he becomes obsessed with and subsequently meets Shio, as he believes that she is the only one who can 'purify' him of his horrendous experience due to his trauma causing him to see younger girls as more "pure" than evil older women.]]
* GildedCage: This imagery appears a lot in regards to Shio and Satou's apartment. Satou does her best to earn money so that they have the ability to live in her [[spoiler: dead neighbor's old]] apartment, with plenty of food, running water, and even television, along with other treats. And Shio has no problems living there aside from occasional boredom. Thought his is likely because she's too innocent to understand [[AbductionIsLove Satou's true intentions for always keeping her inside]].
* TheKindnapper: Satou gives the excuse to Mitsuboshi that she feels that only she can make Shio happy, as there's no telling if being with her family would actually be good for her. Though it's unknown how much she actually believes this as opposed to her justifying her kidnapping of Shio.

* LoveMakesYouEvil: Satou can be seen as this. As her violent tendencies emerged after encountering Shio and falling in "love" with her.
* LoveRedeems: Averted HARD. Satou operates under the impression that as long as it's for her love of Shio, anything that she does is perfectly fine. Including threats, assault, and outright Murder.

* TheShutIn: Shio is often left alone for most of the day because of Satou having to go out of the apartment to attend school and go to work so she can earn money to support them. She is perfectly capable of leaving the apartment, but does not do so due to Satou telling her that the outside world is dangerous. Even to the point where she's asked not to open the balcony door and step outside there. (Though this likely is due in reality for Satou to prevent Shio from being seen by anyone, since she knows someone is looking for Shio. [[spoiler: Though Shio later loses the ability to leave the apartment due to Satou installing a lock on the outside of the door to prevent her from leaving under her own power.]]

Happy Sugar Life is the story of a girl named Matsuzaka Satou, who has never experienced true love. But, one day, comes upon a lost child named Shio Kazuo, for whom she feels something towards for the first time. Having felt this emotion she has never experienced before, Satou is determined to hold Shio close and never let her go.

* DepravedBiSexual: It's...really hard to discern Satou's true orientation. She's had mindless sex with quite a few boys, but her obession/love for Shio is seemingly very romantic, if not quite sexual.

Not only is Satou perfectly willing to murder people in order to keep Shio to herself, [[spoiler: including the neighbor whose apartment she and Shio currently live in (though it should be mentioned that said neighbor tried to strangle Shio over his own obsession with Satou, and Satou only killed him because of that)]], but there are several other characters who exhibit obsessive or excessively controlling behavior.

* RedEyesTakeWarning: Satou's eyes, as seen in the image for this manga's page, are canonically blood red. And considering how she is, this is not a warning to be taken lightly.
* RoseHairedSweetie: So Satou often appears on the outside, with her long, cotton candy pink hair and seemingly sweet demeanor. But on the inside... not so much.

* TeacherStudentRomance: Satou's homeroom teacher has apparently convinced other girls in her class to sleep with him. And at present, he's currently pursuing Satou.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Satou delivers a sound one to her teacher attempting to force her to sleep with him. So thoroughly creeping him out and blackmailing him that he can barely respond.
* TranquilFury: When Satou gets angry, more often than not, there is no outright rage or fury. Unless you count the wide eyed, crazy stares she gives just before she goes on the attack.
