Such cases often go through the struggles of the protagonist to hide their true nature. If PlayedForLaughs, the characters may unwittingly riff on this (if Jane is a vampire, for example, there may be ironic quips about how she's acting "dead" or how a situation "bites"). The plot often leads up to an inevitable InternalReveal where the protagonist's friend is let in on the secret. Sometimes it's intentionally exposed to them as a [[AFriendInNeed test of friendship]], with the friend becoming a SecretKeeper. In other cases, the friend discovers it on their own and [[SecretSecretKeeper decides to continue playing dumb]]. However, it's also fairly common for StatusQuoIsGod to be in effect, with the friend remains unwitting throughout the entire story or series.

Jane and Nick have always been [[ChildhoodFriends best friends]]. Maybe they're even [[RelationshipUpgrade developing feelings for each other]]. The trouble is, Jane has supernatural powers, and Nick [[MuggleBestFriend doesn't]]. And for some reason, she can't tell him about it.

Maybe Jane moonlights as a superhero, and she doesn't want anyone to find out about her SecretIdentity. Maybe she's a witch, or some type of supernatural creature, and she's afraid of [[WitchHunt persecution]]. Or maybe the {{Masquerade}} keeps her from telling anyone else about her predicament, with [[KilledToUpholdTheMasquerade dire consequences]] for rule-breakers. Regardless, the protagonist is forced to hide their true identity from the people around them, ''especially'' their best friend.

Major rewrite for the trope description

Jane is the hero of the story, but she is a supernatural entity. Whether she is a Vampire/werewolf/zombie/etc, is not important. She has a secret, and the secret must remain such because of the {{Masquerade}}... In comes Nick, Jane's best friend. They share everything, and tell each other everything. Well, almost everything.

Cue ironic statements about a show being "dead" or how it "bites". Sometimes, the show will lead up to the reveal and will harp on about the true [[AFriendInNeed test of friendship]], with the friend now becoming a SecretKeeper. In other cases, the friend discovers it on their own and [[SecretSecretKeeper decides to continue playing dumb]]. It's just as common for StatusQuoIsGod to be in effect though, and the friend remains unknowing throughout the entire story, no matter what happens. This can be especially jarring if the nonhuman friend has obvious visual cues as to their true identity, like ever present vampire teeth, a fondness for wearing wizard gear, technicolor hair, etc.

Compare LockedOutOfTheLoop, MuggleBestFriend.
